Dev Talk & Tea - Hello Again
Просмотров 244Год назад
Hi there, my name is Rhianne and I'm a game developer who likes to create cosy and fun content. I used to do something called Dev Talk & Tea when I started working in games but I only made 3 episodes before becoming overwhelmed. Now I'm ready to take another stab at it and use my free time to create relaxing content about game development, my day-to-day, and general nerdiness. SOCIAL LINKS HERE...
Rhianne, please make the audio louder, I like the video but it's hard to hear
@@alexpotterson9119 noted! Thank you for the feedback!
My thoughts on this are you speak of those who are looking to take up this role as a career maybe and as an Indie dev myself I know there are many roles that we must become competent at as disciplines. However, Narrative Design is certainly a key role that binds many projects together and is not talked about often enough. This was an informative tea, no chalk but talk. appreciated the knowledge share, new sub.
I'm in my 60s, with lots of camping, D& D, and cosplay experience you have inspired me to look into LARP here in the USA. Your creativity, bravery, and cleverness are refreshing and inspiring. As a woman, of a certain age, I am used to being overlooked and ignored. Roll play is a place I can be as big or as small as I like, according to my character and the collaborative story. The gaming community is more welcoming than it has ever been, and most of the time a safe place for those who are discovering their real selves, or trying to find a tribe. So, You have inspired me to give it a go, gonna research groups in my area and see what I can find. Thank you , and thanks to all the gamer/ d&d/ LARP folks who are trying to make the hobby less mysterious and more accessible. Best wishes from Colorado USA.
This is so heart-warming to read! I'm so glad you're looking at joining LARP. I wish you all the fun in the world <3
Live this and I loved being able to interact with Selene this event. Can't wait to get back next year!

It takes a certain kind of person to enjoy deving.
Great video, very consize and informative! I've run into the same problems with finding resources for narrative design. I'm pretty new to the field and have been creating content for that specific reason as I learn myself. What are some subjects/areas of narrative design that you feel could use exploring/highlighting/explaining for beginners? I'd love to have a little chat about that!
Thank you! Mainly I encourage people new to ND to look at both writing and design work - understanding how to write scripts and story for games as well as getting to know how to work in an engine allows you to learn the best of both worlds and opens up more opportunities.

your smile was so big in the end when you talked about starting as somewhat of a blank slate and now having found where you want to take her organically, because you had so many inspirations during the weekend. oof thats so good.
Please could you do a video on how you pack everything for public transport 😭😭 I’m desperate to go to empire but I have no idea how I’d manage to take everything on trains and tubes!!!
@@emilythomas7340 funny you should mentioned that! I might have something in the works 👀
@@RhianneMurphy ahhh how exciting!!! Thank you!!!
Took me way too long to get around to watching this! Always good to see you in the field. I would always be weary of eurohike gear, you can sometimes get a good bargain but in general i dont rate the quality of that brand at all. Camping gear in general, I've got an abundance of camping gear if you ever want the Dragons Watch crew to bring anything down for you to borrow I'd be more than happy, think we know you well enough at this point to know you'll look after it 😊. *scoooooons awaaay!*
As someone who has absolutely no idea where to start, but just knowing that this is something I've always wanted to get into, I found this so so so helpful! Thank you so much for not going super crazy in depth where it could be confusing due to over explaining, but still covering everything ! Super cool! Thanks!!
Thank you for watching! I'm glad it was helpful :)
have yet to watch the video, but I’m with you in the photo from the “😮” thumbnail! Hahaha. Urizen group chat asked me what i said to you hahaha. @@RhianneMurphy I have not yet. I will do so!
Thank you for sharing your experience. Really do appreciate the honesty in regard to the nots, even if it is only one thing. The safety of the players has to be priority, and we know how quickly things can go wrong with large crowds with limited space. I heard they are moving to a permanent location next year further north, hopefully this will go hand in hand with ensuring there are enough refs and space for the ever expanding player count. I’m really keen to try it, but I think I’m leaning towards giving “second breakfast” the hobbit larp a go, before attending Empire, as I think it’s on a much smaller scale, better for my claustrophobia 😂 really keen to see all your anvil content and experiences going forward, it does otherwise sound incredible! Thanks again, Layla
Hey Layla, thank you for your comment <3 Hobbit larp sounds incredible! I also heard about a potential new location but await official news , but totally agree that hopefully it should make things easier for the event running and planning.

When you make tweaks to the plot, do you, in turn, make tweaks to the character's arc? That sounds like it gets messy the more you do it. And this is coming from a junior-level game writer.
@@HD_Simplicityy in short, yes. And yes it can get messy :) The best way to mitigate this is to have a clear plan early on of what kind of story is feasible to make within your scope and have key stakeholders sign off on story concepts. Iteration is inevitable though - sometimes it's small but sometimes other elements of the game need to change which can impact story and characters.
@@RhianneMurphy That makes sense. Changes within scope of ideas
thank you so much for this video and the template! currently I'm looking for junior positions as a narrative designer and this is so helpful in building portfolio!
After seeing this Video it makes no sense to me to be a Narrative Designer. Are you a kind of "Jack of all Trades"? For example: Does ND imply that the Writer of the Story does not have the Inside of a Gamer? Like you do not need a Writer that is also a Gamer? Can you pls elaborate why a ND is even needed. How much influence do you have? Who does aprove your work? Thank you.
@@mrturbo84 Hiya! So the TL;DR is that an ND is the overseer of narrative. Some Devs don't have or need one because the narrative isn't as heavy so they might just hire a writer to write some voice lines for example. Comparatively, larger and more intricate narratives in games sometimes have teams lead by either the design director or narrative director (again, depending on team size). Writers may only have to work on scripts whereas narrative designers (especially technical narrative designers) also have to understand design principles and work in software to implement scripts like in engine. Hope this helps! :)
@@RhianneMurphy Thanks for the Answer. How much influence has the ND on the Story? What if the Writer wants Something in the Story but the ND (Narrative Designer) does not. Is there no friction? So if the Team is bigger you hirer a ND but why not just hirer more Writers? When you work basically in every Part of the Development how can you become a Master in your job? That Multitasking sound very Stressfull. Do you only need to Understand the Fundamentals?
@@mrturbo84 Ideally it's a team effort, though someone has to steer the ship. This is usually some sort of narrative lead (Narrative director, Lead writer or sometimes the design director) again, totally depends on the team size and the kind of project you're working on. As for 'why not just hire writers', some places do! The main difference between Writers and ND is that not all writers have game experience, whereas ND's have to have game experience. So if a team is looking to have someone who understands both writing and how it's implemented into engines who has worked on games before, then they'll likely want an ND instead o a writer. That's not to say writers don't have experience working on games but in general that's the understanding. The secret is, every single person on a development team will multitask to some extent. To become a master at your craft I would argue it requires you to understand how the others work so you can best improve your work to collaborate and create more efficiently. Everyone starts with the fundamentals, but overtime you just naturally pick up things through experience and time.
@@RhianneMurphy Thank you so much. It becomes now clearer to me. I hope you do not mind if i ask more questions later. :)
Writer writes a story, ND weaves a narrative. Don't mistake narrative for story nor weaving for writing. Pacman has a narrative, not a story.
I was worried for your cup of tea tbe entire time hoping you had a chance to drink it! Aha great video.
This was such a great video, really informative and has definitely set the writer cogs in my brain turning for my next character! I had a couple of questions pop up that I’d appreciate any insight on if you have the time :) 1. Would you suggest putting this document as a sample in a narrative portfolio? I know hiring managers typically don’t have long to look at each applicants portfolio so I’m cautious about putting a large document in there - but at the same time I feel like showing the ability to go into this level of detail with character development shows real skill. 2. Would you do the same level of detail or whittle it down for a character that’s designed to be an NPC? With being a DND character Vala’s document obviously suits a character biography built for a protagonist, but is there anything you would change if she was instead just going to be a put into a game as a side-quest giver or an ally? (p.s. have you tried yorkshire tea’s biscuit brew? it’s been my new favourite writing companion lately)
Heya! So if you're starting to build a portfolio, this would certainly be a relevant piece to have in there until you get your foot in the door or work on more projects :) As for smaller NPC's, I would make them much smaller bios - some background NPC's are literally just 'Bob the burly weapon trader who is a human with a gruff persona and voice' and that's it!
I’m not a developer nor do I know the slightest thing about being one BUT your video was in my suggested and I watched thru the whole thing thoroughly entertained
Thank you!
This was great! Love to see game dev writing videos, I'll be using those templates for sure
Awesome! Thank you for watching :)
The algorithm lead me to this video. Great presentation and looking forward to more content in writing in games.
@@DoukuDango Thank you! :)
if you get a little adventures come to Drachenfest in germany, its once a year, the 3 biggest larp in the world and really stunning. only difference is that there is a 24/7 in time and you can use ur character from empire if you want
It will be great and fun to meet you there. I also started 2023 winter. Trying to find more friends and people to explore more of Empire and its system. Being a brass coaster you will find me there! or well I'll spot you and find you!
How do you spell the desk brand name you purchased? thanks
Vasagle :)
Hey! I learnt about empire through a fellow member of my medieval archery group. I really want to go, and have a basic kit due to doing medieval reenactment already. My question is, what advice can you give in regards to going to your first empire event, by yourself as a woman? My husband isn’t interested in going and my daughter is too young to come with me. I’m abit overwhelmed of the thought of going by myself. I don’t know where to start, am I allocated a random encampment when I join a nation?. Any advice would be great! I’m hoping to go to E4 this year. Thank you, Layla
Heya! So I did go with a friend the first time but I have also done a solo night and I've found people are very kind and look out for one another. You can join discords and facebook pages for the event/your nation to connect with people beforehand. For camping, it depends if you are camping in character or out of character. Out of character you can pitch wherever in your nations designated area. In character you'll need to organise where your tent goes with whoever that nation's camp planner is. Hope this helps a bit :)
@@RhianneMurphyreally helpful thank you! 😊😊
I am a Marcher so we like fighting, nonsense and farms. LARP is definitely better with friends. Weather wise Empire does seem to be slightly cursed we either get too hot or too wet never a British mediocre. The Marches has a little bridge over where our water pools.
This is so lovely! 🧙♂️
Thank you!
ive recently took up interest in this position specifically as a way to work in game design and was wondering if this position ends up working closely with concept artists or if there was maybe another term for someone who does both. i was a drawer before i took interest in game design and am wanting to work on narrative while still having a hand in the visual design: iyo would seeking a smaller studio where these roles are interspersed be best for that? (thanks for the vid also i feel like its helped me get some bearings, also is that kurama on your shelf?)
Hiya! So in my experience, narrative should work with the art team in some capacity, but a narrative/artist role that combines both doesn't really exist unless you're planning on starting your own team or working as a solo dev (I'm talking very small indie team 1-5 people). Reason being that both roles are usually full-time jobs that require constant attention, so having someone oversee both would not be fair on the individual and massively slow down development time. My advice would be perhaps start your own projects where you can do both or look at working for one of those roles full-time whilst exploring the other in a more personal capacity (working full time in narrative but working on art in your personal time or vice versa). Hope that helps!
Your video was super helpful to me thank you very much ☺️
Oof... that chin stripe makup is a social yikes moment... look up why if you haven't
Oh you could see the back of my bar
Ive got some good bags and pouches from Darkblade larp, they had a trader tent at E1 also, so you might find them at E2 also
In defence of the scam bag...in a real fantasy world, if a leatherworker made a mistake like that, they'd still sell it as that's precious materials they can't recuperate, and you got it for free. You could RP that you rescued a leatherworker's kid and they were so grateful the kid insisted on making you a gift. Silver linings and all.
That's such a cute idea!! Let's hope it doesn't fall apart :P
Love the video i'm trying to go back in larping myself and i can't wait ! btw where did you find that lilith statue ? :)
Thank you! We got it a few years ago during aa sale on the Blizzard store :)
Can you do a video going into more the basics of what astronomancy is at Empire?
