Sense of Place: High-density wine-growing at Elanto Vineyard
This 2019-planted southeast-facing site is home to 10.6 hectares of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The vines are trained 0.5m from the ground and planted at a density of 11,111 vines per hectare in rows spaced 1.2 metres x 0.75 metres. But this isn’t a numbers game; this is a far-reaching farming equation.
The Burgundy-obsessed Australian wine-grower trying to emulate the nectar of that Pinot Eden is a well-worn trope. But it is one thing to mimic the cellar practices of your idols and quite another to dig down to the root of what makes for memorable, inimitable excellence.

This cool island is hot property. The Apple Isle is home to just 1% of Aussie vines but over-indexes in wine show wins, press attention and the thirsty gaze of deep-pocketed industry players looking to get hold of prime vineyard real estate that might weather the immediate threat of global warning. The island came to prominence as a source of grapes for sparkling wines - that's what drew Champa...

Know your étiquette: Adelaide Hills. The excellent images by John Kruger do a lot of the talking here, as the splendour of Adelaide Hills is kind of wrapped up in the sunshine and lofty coolness of this region. Its proximity to Adelaide makes it an easy reach for tourists, who’ll find a lot to delight them among the 50-odd cellar doors nestled among these valleys. Home to less than four-fifths ...

Well, this is a bit next-level nerdy. Not even an appellation, and something I wasn’t even aware of until relatively recently, even though it’s been going since 2017. Mind you, just a handful of growers and tiny production. Why care? Well, it’s always notable when you get a breakaway group of super-ambitious, quality-obsessed producers working hard to transcend the perceived limits of their app...

We’re off to Spain for some traditional-method bubbles. A lot of people ask me about various sparkling wine options and which make a sound alternative to Champagne. In general, this is quite a poorly understood category, maybe because so much fizz is poured unthinkingly down throats when meets, greets and toasts are on the menu. Also, Champagne’s luxury marketing tends to give a sense that you’...

Thanks for such an insightful and informative video. I believe By Farr do this kind of densely planted block with their Tout Pret bottling, an absolutely amazing bottle that is very similar to Burgundy Pinot
Pleasure, Paul - thank you for watching and leaving a comment. Yes, indeed - though it differs in its site architecture, the Farr family’s Tout Près block is indeed close planted and therefore high density. The Farrs’ knowledge (and sage adaptation) in this area goes back a very long way, as Gary was the winemaker at Bannockburn, whose Serré vineyard (still turning out excellent wines) is the first of its kind. By Farr has done further close-planting in its Côte Vineyard, where the family’s RP Pinot Noir and GC Chardonnay come from. They are exceptional wines - a couple of those GCs among my favourite ever glasses of Australian Chardonnay.
ok so I have officially geeked out over this hahaha. Old mate Joel Pizzini is OBSESSED with soil too and honestly I could listen to him all day long about this. This is a gorgeous video. More please!
Thank you, Mel x

Man, your way of giving uplifting feedback is just superb! Thanks a lot for watching, and for the comment. Would love it if you’d share it, if you think others will get something out of it.
Thanks for sharing this valuable video. A question: You dont use a chiller during fermentation. This does not harm to aromas which they may evaporate at high temperatures of fermentation?
In the subtitles from 3.14 - 3.16 you read "handsome" French intern, but if you listen closely it is just a French intern. He is a handsome garçon though, nice touch.
Gerry is the most brilliant winemaker. Her insights are beautifully articulated
Was yeast added at all? It wasn't shown in video. Also was sugar added to get that ending alcohol content? Thanks!
No, in this case no yeast was added as the must was allowed to ferment naturally. This is also called wild or spontaneous fermentation - the same as when we say "fermented with native/indigenous yeasts". The yeasts naturally present in the winery/vineyard get to work on their own!
This video was quite informative and intriguing. Thank you for sharing . I love Pinot Noir 🍷!
Thank you for watching and commenting. And so do I!
Thank you for watching, and leaving a comment!
What are they using to top off the barrel? Is it extra pinot noir they have stored somewhere? Or is it just grape juice
Yep, more Pinot Noir - a constant job…
Nailed it again Ed. I would like to know more about sweet wines and the variation in flavour profiles from Germany, Austria, Italy through to Hungary and on to our own Rutherglen. Fascinating styles. I have a 99 Yquem (750ml) rolling around should I leave it, sell it or drink it with you? Keep up the informative work it is excellent.
Nice video, thanks. A 60-year vine, wow! But why is it called "Saint Joseph"?
Love Pinot Noir! thanks for sharing
Thank you - I love it, too. Thank you for watching.
