Strange Horticulture : The First Times - Newcomer's 1st hour, Let's Play
First hour of a 'new' game, this time Strange Horticulture.
Somewhat of a narrative 'who-dunnit', essentially some light puzzle aspects you work your way through in order to discover what is going on.
There are multiple endings, but ultimately not sure it's that replayable as the plants you identify will stay the same each time and working out which is which is 75% of the game....

Shadows of Brimstone: Strike Team 'Burbs' - Episode 9, Cut Off - Reveal Your Hand
Jesus man how many cards do you have for mines encounters?😮
I think the answer to that is 'all'. :) I think there's every card available at retail in there (not including the mission specific stuff like adventures or Vampire etc.) The Gear and Darkness decks are also pretty huge compared to the straight out the box numbers - the odd two or three here and there in every expansion adds up.
Thanks for talking through this. As your evil Magician/Marionette/Evil Twin, we didn't speak at all and I had no idea who the demon was so I was just not voting on anything. (If I'd been forced to choose, I would've guessed either Matt or Crimson) Instead, after nearly outing myself to the Assassin, I actually outed to the Lunatic as evil Magician but probably would've backpedalled into Magician fishing for an evil. In the end, I spent most of the game 'wondering if I was somebody's Marionette' (which I knew was definitely not the case) after Andy told me he was the Recluse. I think not having talked to you or any of the minions made it easier to bluff that I didn't know if my demon was on the block or not!
I think it's often tough as the Bounty Hunter turned townsfolk to find your evil team, and thinking back on it - Evil Magician is probably evern harder, because the evil team is going to be super cautious already about who they open up to. Throw in the absolutely correct decision by Gambling to mask that a Bounty Hunter was in play... yeah, was always going to be a tough job to find your team and convince them...
Great video! To help correct some stuff and fill in some blanks from my (JC's) perspective: - The reason we thought it was Vortox straight away was three things. Firstly, Gambling was bluffing Dreamer at first, and claimed to dream me as two roles I wasn't. (This wasn't true, but added to our thinking.) Secondly, as the Grandmother I saw the Drunk, which is the classic "thing that isn't immediately provably wrong" thing to show someone in a Vortox game. Thirdly, there were rumblings around town about an Alchemist who'd seen the Witch ability but hadn't been woken up to make a pick. The specifics beyond that (them being an Evil Twin) I did not know, but it immediately sounded very believable to me. - Conor did say he'd tried to kill me the night you killed him, so I think you remembered that bit wrong? - I didn't nominate Crimson, Matt did. I was waaaay too indecisive to be confident nominating anybody at that point. I also didn't actually think there was an Assassin still active, I felt pretty confident Jonnie was the Assassin as it was the most logical minion to show the Grandmother in that scenario. My bigger concern was twofold. Firstly, there was a chance one of the three of you was my Grandchild. Secondly, Matt nominating Crimson read to me like a demon trying to bus their Marionette, and it occurred to me you could be the BH-turned evil player and I was the last living good player. I was really tempted to nominate someone else after Crimson got put on the block, but ultimately we'd spent a healthy chunk of dead votes, most of which I thought were good, to get them there. To lift would take more good dead votes, and then give evil voting power on the final day. So I ultimately left it and regretted it!
Ah. And this is why I record stuff.... my memory is very odd, and I find remembering this kind of thing really tricky after 24 hours. I knew absolutely none of that Vortox world building, but honestly I am never surprised when it gets outed as Vortox early as it's not as hard to hide as people imagine. Hence I always try if evil to construct Vortox neutral bluffs if I can. Conor nominating you? Sounds right in hindsight. I knew it was just on someone I either needed alive at that point or I would prefer in final 3 as a potential frame than the probably outed Lunatic - because I was running out of kills to place. And definitely missed that in the last... must have been concentargin hard on how I was going to lie through my teeth to live! I think it was a tricky situation for town, no hard evidence on anyone, all of us equally mechanically probable, so right down to the socials - with arguably a slight edge my favour of the minion ping potential. I hadn't considered the potential for your grandchild still being alive until after it all shook down, but that's a very real fear. I was worried that despite the dead good votes on it, it wasn't quite enough to seal the deal but I absolutely couldn't risk a nom in a situation I am already winning just in case it drew attention.
Thanks for uploading! I had a great time as the Lunatic in this game, including a very scary conversation where I outed to the Evil Magician day 1. I didn’t see enough minions for a Magician, so I figured out I was probably the Lunatic and was indeed trying to damage control by choosing first night, evil or suspicious players. Not sure if it was miscommunication between myself & the ST, but I’m pretty sure I chose JC on my last night (not Ffin!) - they were my lunatic Mario and seemed like the current frame, so I wanted to remove that possibility. Absolutely wild game - thanks for playing!
No, no, not Chiz or the ST team. Way more likely my shonky memory. As just mentioned to JC - I instantly dismissed whoever you chose as more valuable to me alive than yourself as I didnt think you were a credible frame later. If you had nailed a minion at a point I felt it mattered, I'm not sure what I would have done... I got lucky that the early picks were good and I wasn't bring picky - particularly the Recluse that allowed the Oracle to just be completely neutered!
Woohooo, grabbing some popcorn and watching this masterpiece
Ha = it's 3 hours of intermittent bickering :) Not sure we'll stretch to the full 6 party posse again - this was 7 hours in total for this mission (arguably should have been more if we'd remembered the a couple of rules omissions towards the end)
Nice played :) Is it possible to share with scans of Jargono themed cards from the Valley of the Serpent Kings?
Not sure I understand the question, but I don't see why the video couldn't be shared.
@@hefrvifamilygaming9540 I meant if you have any repository with scanned cards and if you could share it.
@@Baradnor Ah - no, I'm just painstakingly scanning each one as I go and dropping them into the video editor from the hard drive. If I ever manage to get ahead of myself on the editing the logical thing would be to scan them all at once so I wouldn't need to do that, but I've not managed it yet!
@@hefrvifamilygaming9540 Sure, I understand. The amount of work you put into your gameplay is truly impressive. Nevertheless, if you ever manage to scan all the Jargono Otherworld Threat, Jargono Encounters, and Jargono Artifacts cards from the latest Kickstarter, it would be amazing!
Yay another video
A little experimentation with the camera at the start, not happy with it though. Going on vacation for a week, but trying to get episode 12 finished before I go so it can be auto-scheduled for next Friday.
@@hefrvifamilygaming9540 Its okay, I love the content btw. Been following for a bit
At the start of your video on the first character, it has a madness card which I haven't seen before. Is this a card supplement or something you have made? If so,, do you have a link? Thanks 😀
A long time ago at the dawn of Shadows of Brimstone, someone called Klutz made a really useful tool. If you search for 'Klutz Card Factory' there's a web app with a couple of templates for making Shadows cards...
@hefrvifamilygaming9540 they look great. Were they easy to do and what types did you end up making. Enjoying following your family adventures
@@nickgraney2119 Dead easy - you just go to the web page and type out what the card text you wnat is and it generates the image in SoB stye. We have cards for all our Madness, Mutation, Injury, Town/Camp Items/Abilities. I just print out the front and back, stick some card from cereal/pizza boxes in between and done. Not quite the same quality as the real deal - but good enough to save constantly dragging rulebooks and town sheets out.
Just one thing on here, you rolled a Depth Event and moved the Darkness down two spaces like you would on a failed roll. Depth Events don't usually count towards that (unless it's the Depth Event that moves the Darkness down faster, but you rolled the Growing Dread event)
Yup - comes up in a couple of videos time where we have a crashing realisation of how dumb we have been. Cost us the previous mission. Quite annoying as I'd read the new Adventures rule book before playing this campaign but only spotted the differences - and this is something we'd been playing correctly in previous playthroughs - no idea why it slipped the mind until we were half a dozen missions in :(
@@hefrvifamilygaming9540 It can happen. I remember I ran the Rain Dance mission from th eBlack Fang Tribe set once, using a six person party and rolled double 1's. I immediately draw for an ambush (6 Bandits and 1 Serpentman Shaman), forgetting that doubles in the Rain Dance mission get a party member struck by Void Lightning. I also didn't realize I was supposed to pick one Posse member and have the Bandits appear on that map tile, so I had one Bandit on each member (with the Shaman popping up nextt to the Cowboy who lassoed him up pretty quickly). I just thought it would make sense to have the gang of Bandits appear from different spots to hold up the Posse. On the plus side, that was one of the best missions I played for Darkness rolls, I only missed once or twice
I uploaded some Hero sheets for this, on the Boardgamegeek site, Gates of Valhalla/Files if you’re interested, the eight Vikings, male/female. Hope you can locate them and enjoy them!
You like your double ones lol!
Yar - that was not a good start. Paticularly when we doubled down by treating it as a failed Hold roll. Hoenstly, that mistake probaby cost us thah mission :(
Everybody has to roll for the Creeping Vines encounter card, not just the character on the tile, unless the card states otherwise. Aaargh! Raptor!
Gas Warfare has a ton of rules - one of them is that Encounters are only participated in by heroes on the initiating tile or adjacent. So in this case, only Sparky was elligible. Also - argh Raptor, just as we tried to get clever and left that barricade undefended
@@hefrvifamilygaming9540 oh right, to be fair, that should be applied across the board, as so many times you have heroes one or more tiles distant from an encounter. As I don’t have Tredarran expansions I may house rule that lol!
@@marklong4317 We filmed the 8th campaign mission yesterday and it came up in there. The rule isn't there for that one - but it very much suggests splitting the party. "Hang on, so if I trigger this all the way over here - how come you lot over there need to check? Eh, *shrug*"
You're dead right; a Feeding Burrow DOES spawn more and more Slashers! Thank goodness you passed that roll!
'Let's not deal with this primitive barbarian world any longer thanwe have to - pass those damn rolls and get throuhg the portal!'
Why did you draw a low threat for temple guard when you had three heroes in the posse?
Part of the mission rules for that mission are that all threat cards are one level lower (so the Medium they normally are becomes a Light)
@@hefrvifamilygaming9540 You're completely right. I played this wrong where I only lowered the threat level of the ones that spawned at the start of turns (other sources stayed normal)
@@PiterMorbid I wince enough looking back at these recordings at how much we got wrong - but that's the perils of a near year long hiatus! We joked about it at Roll to Move that it's not a proper game of Shadows unless someone says 'hang wait a minute back up I think we did that wrong...'
@@hefrvifamilygaming9540 that being said errors in gameplay videos really annoy me and sometimes make me wanna stop watching. I guess I watch it as if I was paying it myself and I try hard to play by the rules. You're right unfortunately most gameplay videos have rules errors maybe it would be worth it to read the rulebook and faq again before starting a new series of videos
You have to assign the hits before you roll the damage. I think the Sergeant rolled the 5 damage dice and assigned them to different enemies, but should have chosen the targets of the hits before the damage was known.
Looks like sparky forgot to use her Genius starting ability when testing Agi for Poisoned Darts
Oh, yes. That would have been a more efficient first re-roll and potentially avoided the use of grit. I suspect it'll not be the first omission we make (Waiting for someone to point out the mistake with the spider hole...). There's a lot going on sometimes, but at least Shadows is co-operative rather than competitive so rules slip ups or misplays don't 'cost' anyone the game...
Great content especially great to see the goody box. Video quality and shots are on the lower end, though. We can't make out the components due to that. Maybe next time it can be better like for example the way Grumpy Meeple does his unboxings.
Love it that you found a Wanted Poster for Trederran Invaders! See how popular Trederrans are throughout the universe?
I know! Stuff like that is what makes Brimstone great. Couldn't have planned that, but so fitting when it occurs...
@@hefrvifamilygaming9540 that's exactly right. Theme on sob is evoked naturally rather than textually, where the story makes sense and is narrated by what happens in the game
Subbed. Great to see kids enjoying a dose of Brimstone, this is my 11 year old lads go to game. Also good to see someone semi local doing content on the game. Cheers, will follow your adventure, good luck from Lancashire!
My eldest (Sparky - 12) loves it. Youngest (Raven - 10) is more variable, for a variety of reasons will play one game maybe, but will then shoot off to do something copletely different! (Minor Spoilers: Raven end up not being on every mission)
@hefrvifamilygaming9540 love your kids names, very unique. My lad (Finley) is big on Brimstone so it's usually a yes to a game, which can quickly turn into a campaign. We have quite a alot of content, so the hard bit is keeping him from switching to one of his other campaign parties and to keep play8ng through the current group we have in play
@@nickgraney2119 I should point out those are the character names :D

re Tome of Dark Prophecy: It can actually be incredibly useful, though it depends a bit on the party. While Growing Dread cards can be terrible because they typically all have to be resolved directly before completing the mission, there are several Darkness Cards that are just as bad and that remain in play, and Growing Dread Cards, unlike Darkness Cards, can be automatically cancelled at any time by every party member spending 1 Grit; meaning ANY party can get rid of the with a few Grit. So if you pull a bad Darkness Card (like one that buffs the Combat or Defense of all of a common enemy type and remains in play), especially if it's early on and you're sitting on Grit, you can toss that and trade it for 0-3 Growing Dread Cards, which you can cancel over the course of the mission. There's a reason it sells for $625, in a party that doesn't have a decent method of cancelling Darkness Cards it can be the difference between a good or bad run. Though it's obviously going to be less useful with your Explorer with the Dark Stone Hunter subclass. Still, if you had the other subclass on him, the Tome would be a great find.
I'm still in a SoB/FoFo mindest of thow the henchman at the Darkness which repeatedly solves the same problem for less, but need to play more Adv to get used to that new paradigm. I think I also suffer in the other sets from having a very diluted Darkness deck so it's rare absoluteley killer ones arise. But... I can see if I play more Adv there's going to be cards that are better within that context than the vanilla experience because of the different bounding constraints
Thanks!
Just curious, what do you use for glue for your models? I've used brush on super glue and a model glue, always looking for a better glue, though
I'm absolutely sold on plastic cement/glue (different brands call it different things); at least on the plastic models anyway. You only need a small amount, it creates an initial bond in seconds and when 'dry' it is the strongest bond I've found. But that's because it isnt drying as such - it works by melting the plastic and then letting it re-harden (hence the strength of the bond). But that also means it's still pliant for a few minutes too, if you need to pull apart/reposition. The only downsides are if there's any excess you don't notice fast and clean up, it can cause minor deformation/discolouration of the model; and is a right pain with transparent bases as if you get it wrong that's chucking the base in the bin and going again! The one I use at the moment is 'Contacta' by Revell, but not really found much difference between brands. The 'Archive Guardian Assembly' video shows me scewing up and rectifying using this. For the resin models though it doesn't work for fairly obvious reasons, at which point I'm using whatever superglue I have on hand and wishing the model was plastic!
Nicely assembled! I still have to put mine together. This makes me look forward to when I can
Very thorough. Thank you very much
Just annoying that stupid mistake... even after a dry run, putting all the unused spare bits to the side - I still went on auto-pilot for the old guardian!

wow, this game looks boring 😂
Not going lie... unlocked half the stuff and moved on. But it had the advantage of being ludicrously cheap when on sale so - filled an evening I guess...
NICE!
Which one would you recommend ,if you you only get one?
When I started, I only had the City of Ancients. In hindsight, I would recommend starting with the Samps of Death purely because I feel if you're restricting yourself to just 4 heroes the Swamps of Death ones are a better experience for learning the game. But I suspect there would be plenty of dissenting opinions!

The only reason for me to watch a video like this is to see the cards...
Think there's just a cooldown that isn't listed in the description.
Possibly. But previous tests weren't so rythymic as this one - you could go 9 attacks before it dropped back to the unbuffed number. Which would suggest not a cooldown, but something else awry...
who is this tank? Telekom Korea is calling
Awesome stuff, had no idea how to get this achievement, thanks!
Yes, it's hardly obvious from the name or the Lore in the game - but then again, 'not obvious' is the hallmark of Cultist Simulator!

Thanks for the fights This one might have been quicker from Sho-ru if you followed the following rule. "Neither Heroes or Enemies “To Hit” value, may ever be modified below 2+ or above 6+. (This is so that they never automatically succeed on a 1+ or fail on a 7+)" from the FAQ.
OMG I've played 20 hours on this game and this actually how I feel. In the beginning
I put about 180 in by the end, enough to 'complete' all the classes and races from the base game. Didn't feel the need to branch out with the DLC, as it's a bit formulaic once you twig how all the systems work. But, that's pretty decent value of entertainment for a fairly low price game and more than some of the other card builders have lasted...
Fun game. Lots of key decision points. I could almost hear your brain buzzing each turn to make the optimal plays. Very entertaining!
Thank you for this... I late purchased a shogun pledge on the second hand market and have the Village pre-ordered since last year to the UK which hopefully will ship this month... So hard to get stuff for SoB in the UK much of the time, I'm all in on adventures to avoid the difficulty but really looking forwards to seeing this stuff... bloody card packs will be a nightmare to get...
Yeah... I missed the original KS, but managed to get a late pledge just as the campaign was finishing for FoFo. Like you went all in for the Adventures. I think with the Void Swarms that hit retail in teh Uk two weeks ago... we're finally clear of the original KS stuff making it to retail. And yes, the card packs are pretty expensive even if you get them in a 3 for 2 sale, just because the postage seems... disproportionate for what they are. I'm lucky that I have American friends who I get to post them on for me and avoid that.
I chose this deck because it has a tendency to just fall apart if your opponent can win control of the board (either with a board wipe or bigger creatures) and it can get horribly bogged down in Star Alliance turns, although it can also just win sometimes by getting a pile of them out and reaping
I missed out on the kickstarter but were able to get a late Sum pledge from the Flyingfrog store. I'm really looking forward to the Feudal village but it's probably years until it comes out in retail knowing Flyingfrog's schedule. For the Large Oni sheet I would probably laminate it to straighten it out.
i pre-ordered mine in Europe (online store fantasywelt.de) and Feudal Village is said to be expected in August. I just recieved Takubake Samurai and Odo Kuro (also wave 3). So you should be able to get them somewhere this summer i'd guess? The Oni Warlord is expected to arrive in this store in september.
24 hours under a Terraforming Mars big box is showing some promise. Radius of curvature is down by about a quarter....
The noise is killing me…. Sorry cant watch it… very sorry about that… 😞
Moved the mic to further into the table for the future videos, and swapped the USB ports. Try from Session 3, whine isn't around after that...
Was a close one, maybe I should of started to dig for malstrom earlier....but out of all times we've played that's the closest.ive come to winning.
I am sure there'll come a day when I don't pull some ludicrous nonsense...
@@hefrvifamilygaming9540 probably wont be vs me lol...glad even you make fangtooth mistakes
Would you play with two of my decks if I share them with you? thanks for share the matches
Sure, could do! Would have to wait till there's a tournament appropriate to use them, or were you thinking of a specific match up?
Was willing you to Kirby blast Brend then Mug him while they had 8 for that 2nd key, but you didn't 😭
DAmn.... that would indeed have been a brilliant play! Good job I won anyway otherwise I'd kick myself!
Speed!
"I'm not convinced by the SAS creature control number - I think this deck definitely has board control difficulties." That's definitely true, that 10C is a complete lie.
A long battle, but it was pretty one sided. Thanks 👍
If you think this was long, wait till you see the one going up tomorrow. Its twice as long. I'm going to put a warning at the fron of just how long it is! Some lessons were learnt...
Choice: Enforcer, Secret Blade, Spear Turn 1: Spectral Horde activates. Moves to attack Hero. 4 Attacks, Uses 2, 3, 5 and 6 from the enemy dice pool. Inflicts 2 hits for 2 damage. Hits ignore defence on 6+ so Enforcer uses the 4 from the Hero dice pool to roll defence, takes 2 damage. Enforcer activates. Takes 1 Horror hit from terror, uses the 5 from hero dice pool to roll willpower to defend. Rolls to move, uses 1 from the Hero pool to gain a grit. Does not move. Rolls to use secret blade, uses 3, then uses 6 for damage which ignores defence and armour. Rolls to hit, uses the last die from the hero pool of a 2 and a 3 from the next dice pool. Uses the 6 for damage, discards the Spear and uses the extra D6 as 5 from the pool. Total of 9 damage. Spectral Horde rolls armour - 1 and 4 from remaining in first enemy pool, 1 damage, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 from the next pool for a further 3 damage. Enforcer took 2 damage and finished him on turn 1.
Nice. Didn't know there was a route to one turn victory!
This was a weird battle. I don't think the living statues 6s should have been called criticals, enemies don't have criticals like heroes. I also think this was the first time you've done that, in 10 fights. And, if you're going to stick to 6s being critical why didn't the Onmorake even roll to hit? The statue is also not immune to criticals.
What I've been doing is every time an enemy has 'if they roll a six, they ignore defence' I have been treating that as a critical hit - because that's in effect exactly what a critical hit is. That certainly has been the case since the first Statue fight against the Raptor, and I think the very first because the Guardian can also ignore on sixes I recall?
@@hefrvifamilygaming9540 ok lets say 6s are criticals. You never once even bothered to roll for the Onmorakes hits because you assumed it wouldn't break defense. Which would have been true except on 6s. Im going to go back to watch the statue vs the spider lady, i don't think you ever gave her a critical hit either. Yup. On very fist roll for Joroguma you treat a 6 like a normal hit. You also never bother rolling for the summoned spiders again assuming they cant get past defense. You also give the statue the critical damage when it rolls the 2 6s and the give it its grab and through damage, but it should only be the grab damage. 7:42
@@andrewchilton8181 But the Omnorake doesn't ignore defence on 6s? If it did, I would have rolled, because as you say the Living Statue is not immune to crits. I'm not saying all sixes are crits, just those that ignore defense because of the rules on the enemy sheet say 'if you roll a 6, ignore defence'.
@@hefrvifamilygaming9540 oh I see, but it still should only be damaged by the grab and through move. The ability also says "instead of normal damage"
@@andrewchilton8181 Ah - yeah. Damn, I wonder if I'd been getting that wrong with the Raptor and Spider, or indeed the other matches since Statue became champ? Though I suppose the Statue still lost the first two so doesn't matter. Would it beat the Omnorake without my mistake? I think probably? But definitely somethig I'll need to watch for in the next...
You mistakenly put the damage from Living Statue on Living Statue @7:56.
Ha so I did! Good job the tall fellow still managed to win even with a misattribution of that 2 damage otherwise I'd have to scrub and do over :)
