I am 74 and c when I served mass as a kid each of the 3bpriests wanted their baretta presented to him a different way. 2 of the 3 were understanding if you handed it to him wrong, but the 3 rd priest , the pastor would just stand and stare at you until you got it right

The Cardinal is correct, the biretta is not forbidden and priests may wear it processing to, and from the altar for Mass. . Many younger priests are now using it, along with the return of the cassock.

The biretta started falling into disuse even before Vatican II in some countries.
