Nightscape adventures - turning fails into success | Swedish astrophotography
This might be one of my favourite videos in a while - not because I captured spectacular aurora or magnificent scenery or anything like that. But because it is so much about what astrophotography and nightscape photography is for me. It features actual blood, sweat and... maybe not tears, but at least dissappointment. And then that turns into something great in the end. Have you experienced the same?

    I have been hunting the aurora for about the last 15 years and missing it every time, bad weather, wrong time of day, you name it. I'm pretty familiar with coming home disappointed by now and i've found the best way of dealing with it is to have a second reason to go out, to stop focusing on the result and just have a nice night out. While i did miss the powerful May aurora, it clouded over again, i managed to capture the tail end of the storm the next day, it was barely visible with the naked eye but i finally saw it. Then in September, a bit better prepared, i went out early for a G3 storm, looking for a better location to shoot and ended up waiting for hours for a storm that didn't seem to come, in the end i decided to just shoot the Perseids and after just a few minutes a green and purple haze started appearing in my shots. Minutes later and a third of the sky was filled with dancing pillars and curtains, it was spectacular. Then on October the tenth i went out to shoot the C/2023-A3 comet but was unable to find it, soon after the sky clouded over seemingly ruining my chances to see the comet and the aurora predicted for later that night, so i just went home. I did check some aurora webcams but nothing seemed to be happening and then a few hours later youtube served me a webcam from Finland showing the aurora in the south. Miraculously the skies had opened up again and i raced back out to my dark site, just outside of town i could already see an enormous green curtain dancing in the sky. I arrived just in time to set up my camera for the next big wave and it was beyond spectacular, it quickly took up almost two thirds of the sky, filling my view completely. The photos turned out to be even more spectacular than what my eyes saw, i shot a total of 9 panoramas most of them over 240 degrees wide, to capture it all. A few days later i also managed to get some nice shots of the comet. If i had let myself be discouraged by disappointment i never would have been able to see and capture these amazing spectacles. Don't give up!

      That is such a great reply, thank you! And you are completely right, finding those other reasons is very important. For me, it is the stillness and total silence, seeing the nature as if I was alone in the world. It recharges my batteries from the day to day stress 🙂 And honestly... if there was spectacular aurora each and every day and you could just go out there and take any pictures you wanted... then it wouldn´t even be fun. Right? Almost like seeing wild animals in the zoo, not at all the same as in nature. And as you might have seen in one of my recent videos - I got an absolutely fantastic aurora show along with the perseids. So I have no reason to complain 🙂

    Regarding the geomagnetic storm on the night of May 10-11 that "everyone" photographed: you weren't the only one who missed that, I would have been on a suitable location with hardly any light pollution on a somewhat remote island at Lake Saimaa, but sadly also there the clouds were the problem (and there would have also been strong cold winds, which would have made outdoor night photography less pleasant experience). Next night I did manage to catch few aurora pictures, although 1) in May dark night time is surprisingly short and it gets suitably dark for night photography very late and disturbing glow from the sunset lasts long 2) I didn't first notice that the auroras were not in the northern horizon (where also the light from the sunset was still problematic), but above my head 3) aurora photography didn't get my undivided attention as that night was also when Eurovision Song Contest final was held, so I ran between beach and cabin much of the night (yes, the location was our family holiday home).

  • @matej.mlakar

    First of all, I have to compliment the backdrop in this video :D what a nice location. And the tripod looks like it can fill a lot of roles. At the start you mentioned you have some problems with Sirui ballhead's knob - the knob has a build in small silver plate or I dont know how I would describe it. You can rotate that "mini knob" to adjust the tension of the main ballhead knob and how fast it loosens up. I like that ballhead, but never liked that "feature".

    • @MartinFransson
      @MartinFransson Месяц назад

      @@matej.mlakar thank you! Yes, that lokation is great, will try to go there more. I know about the silver dial, but this is something else. The tension can be good but certain manouvers make the ballhead like... stuck. I think it is when I loosen the knob a bit, then loosen the pano base and swing the camera around. Then it's like the knob has been tightened and it is hard to either loosen or tighten further.

    • @MartinFransson
      @MartinFransson 2 месяца назад

      Thank you, I am so happy you liked it 🙂 Well, for the filming to turn out good you need a camera that is able of strong low light performance plus a lens with really good light gathering. I use a Canon R6 and Samyang 35/1.2 or 24/1.4 lenses. My settings are usually ISO 51200 and 1/25s f/1.2 or 1.4. Plus I do some rather heavy noise reduction in post processing. So it takes a lot, unless the aurora is more powerful than what we get down here.

    Hi there! I am passing through Sweden next year mid to late April, on the way to Norway. Would there stjll be cranes around during the end of April?

      @@wildlifethailand2699 hi! There might be a few but late April is pushing it 🙂 On this page you can see statistics for several years regarding number of cranes each day: www.hornborga.com/naturen/transtatistik/

    Another magnificent video, Martin! Congratulations on all of the wonderful information board photographs!!! They capture the spirit of the park perfectly! Regarding the "two trip" equipment problem, I used to use an airport travel cart that I had fitted with over-size mud wheels to carry my tripods, second camera bag, etc. Most of the places I go are not as remote as your locations and leaving equipment unattended is not a option.

    • @MartinFransson
      @MartinFransson 2 месяца назад

      Thank you! That travel cart sounds like a good idea! When I go for my black grouse adventures I sometimes use a small hand truck for the parts where there is a gravel road. No, leaving my gear would normally not be an option for me either... but this being in the "wilderness" and me walking the only path to and from the site I dared to gamble a bit :)

      @@MartinFransson I used to do in-house training videos for a large broadcast equipment manufacturer. I was a one-person production unit so I'd often have cart my gear to remote locations. Thankfully, those days are behind me. 🙂

    Fantastic video, Martin - really enjoyed it and that final image is definitely a keeper! Doing a pano at 50mm is quite a task, and there’s always that horrible residual fear that you’ve missed a panel somewhere crucial! It looks like your conditions are quite similar to what I get round here a lot - very marshy and prone to dew. Great adventure and well worth it, though - thanks for sharing!!

    What a beautiful area indeed Martin! I love those marshlands, the little trees, the wooden paths. The mosquitos not so much. Compliments on your filmmaking also. So many angles. Must have taken a ton of time haha. Appreciated the calculation error scene also 😂. Keep 'em coming Martin! And... #iamonlyhuman

    Amazing night sky full of colours and shooting stars that you captured really nice. Great location in a forest by a big lake. I love the reflections, tree horizon line and the mist creating a cool ethereal effect which lends itself superbly to the aurora laden sky. Fantastic!!
