    I read the other comments and responses and it looks like overall you are not thrilled with the Spacepak fan coils. Did you get a chance to compare them (on paper or otherwise) with other options like Chiltrix? I am not sure if the Chiltrix and Spacepak fan coils are the same rebranded units.

    • @betweentwobrooks
      @betweentwobrooks 9 дней назад

      I'm not certain but I believe the fan coils sold by Chiltrix, Arctic, Spacepak, MBTEK, etc are all coming out of the same manufacturer, possibly Phnix in China. Speaking only about the Spacepak branded ones we bought, they aren't bad products but I am not impressed with the controls and I would expect better fit and finish based on the price.

    your home seems to have been built in New England somewhere by a local architect in Greenwich ( can't recall his name) who did a lot of homes in the 1950s however he designed these homes to look like they were built in the 1700s, do you have any paperwork from 1785 about this house?

    Why do you not like the fan coils? Was debating between central air handler and fan coils for my own place. Thanks for sharing.

    • @betweentwobrooks
      @betweentwobrooks 17 дней назад

      My main complaint is the built in controls. I had to relocate the temp sensor so the thermostatic control would work properly. Sometimes the damper won't open and the unit needs to be power cycled to get that working properly. They are also very sensitive to keeping the filters clean. A little bit of dust dramatically reduces the airflow through the unit. They generally work fine but could use some refinement. We will be installing an air handler and ducts for other areas in our house that are more accessible

      I am happy with the Arctic heat pump which I bought direct from them. I am glad I bought a better controller (HBX, video coming out on that shortly) than what comes standard with the heat pump. I bought the spacepak fan coils online from Hvac Place but I think Arctic is selling the same ones now. They all come from the same company in China. I don't love the fan coils, they work ok but I think we will be putting in an air handler and ducting with traditional thermostat for the next phase of this project. Thanks for watching!

    I have the same storm window setup. When I replaced my windowsill I debated putting the storms back on just like you did. I decided to reinstall the storms and now I'm having doubts because I actually think they trap moisture and are responsible for accelerating wood decay. They also do little to stop bugs (spraying is the only thing that seems to stop that problem) and I don't think they're doing anything to insulate the house. I have 3 or 4 more windows to do and I'm thinking about ripping all the storms out. I'm curious, how's your window working out without the storm in place?

    Thanks for sharing this video with a lot of good ideas to little by little make this old colonial home come alive and be functional for a young family with boys and a dog. The kitchen should be restored to nice plank board wooden floors, a shaker ovular rug and the cozy table to have informal meals with the family. Since it is a colonial I would use colors like blueberry blue, olive green, white, light muted yellow, perhaps for the formal dining room a light salmon muted color or followed the light pastel yellow from the kitchen to the dining room. White granite floors for the bathrooms, subway white tiles and white pedestal vanities and toilet and bathtubs with claws all white clean and timeless also the boys will love the bathtub as oppose to the shower stalls. Note: You already know this but caution at all times when the boys are nearby the brooks surrounding the property and the pool. All the best.

    Always use tape and dope. You left no way to isolate and drain the water pressure from your expansion tank for checking air pressure in your bladder, always use a expansion tank valve. The unit I assume is 5 ton or 60k BTU. Im not sure where you live but most old and drafty homes in eastern PA require 80 to 100 K. It will be interesting to see how long its lifespan is. Heat pumps in this area usually go 12 to 14 years although your monoblock should be a lot less to replace labor wise.

    • @betweentwobrooks
      @betweentwobrooks 2 месяца назад

      Thanks for the tips! Yes, it is a 60k BTU heat pump. Our heat load currently is around 120k BTU, our goal is to decrease this with some insulation and air sealing. We will still probably need a second heat pump unit to meet full load once the whole house is converted.

    that is a monstrous buffer tank :L going all underfloor heating? Im gripped to this series haha ( edit ) answered my question already, how come you didnt use the heat pump for hot water also ? and have you thought about running your underfloor on open loop rather than zoning ?

    • @betweentwobrooks
      @betweentwobrooks 2 месяца назад

      We will have a combination of air handlers, fan coils, and underfloor heating when all is done. We may add hot water in the future but it will require a second tank (one hot and one chilled in the summer). By open loop do you mean just a constant flow and let the fan coils cycle as needed? Practically this is essentially what happens, since I have three zones all tied to one pump. There are very few times all three zones are off. When we add underfloor loops to our bathrooms I will likely run those without thermostat control, they will be heating only (closed during the cooling season)

    • @dansmith436
      @dansmith436 2 месяца назад

      @@betweentwobrooks perfect answer, yes we have started running open loop, although tbh you have the buffer in hand which means cycling won't be a major issue, in the UK most homes can't accommodate a buffer Aswel as a hot water store, so installers don't use them, we then find the heat pump cycles quite badly due to the small volume of water / heat required for only a couple of zones. Therfore we remove all trvs and actuator heads from underfloor systems and find this runs a lot more efficiently and if anything, gives a more even temp throughout the house. Obviosally we don't support cooling from our heat pumps ( it can be done ) but not supported by most manufacturers.

    Nice video, thanks for sharing. Where did you get your pipe insulation from, looks nicer than what I was able to find. I'd be curious to see how condensation affects your setup when you run air conditioning, as its pretty tough to insulate circulators, valves, etc.

    • @betweentwobrooks
      @betweentwobrooks 2 месяца назад

      I got my insulation from Supply House. It's KFlex product, definitely not cheap but nice to work with. I started the system in August last year (videos are only slightly delayed lol) and the condensation is real. I never had any issues in the house, but the exposed valves, manifold, etc drip. It's not a big deal for me since my basement is crushed stone floor and I run a dehumidifier full time. But you would definitely want to do a very good insulation job if this was in a finished space

    • @RicknessJ82
      @RicknessJ82 2 месяца назад

      Makes sense. I guess spray foam is always an option for a really tough shape. I read that circulators are generally made of cast iron and will rust eventually in a chilled water system but I guess it depends on how good their coating is, but doesn't sound like its been a killer for you.

    Nice video. Are you planning to air seal and insulate your home or did you decide you'd prefer to split more wood?

      Air sealing and insulating is in process. There's a lot of holes and no existing insulation so it's going to take a while...

    Just went through an unusual cold snap of -40°C (-41.8°F) up here north of 50 in Canada, our Arctic heat pump system worked great. It looks pretty much the same as yours and we have all in floor hydronic in Radiantboard by Ecowarm. The backup boiler kicked in for the couple of days required to keep the buffer tank temperature at 35°C but now that the temperature is much warmer (+4°C to -8°C) so our buffer tank is only needing to hold a temperature of about 24°C to keep our house at 18°C (we like to be a bit cooler because we are still doing interior finishing work). We actually tore down most of the 1978 built house and rebuilt double stud walls for ~R48 with ~R60 ceiling so our heat loss is very low. There were some issues finding trades who were willing to learn about the system and do the installation for us but adopting “new” technology is always going to be viewed with skepticism by those who choose not to learn new ideas. We wouldn’t go back to using natural gas because it’s just not as comfortable and the future costs are only going to go up. At least with electricity we have the option of adding solar panels and tying into the grid to further control our electricity costs. Thanks for sharing your experience.

      Its great to hear from someone else with this system. How long has your Arctic heat pump been in operation? Thank you for watching, we really appreciate the input!

      @@betweentwobrooks We’ve been on quite an odyssey with our house renovation/building project so from the time we ordered it to actually getting it operational was quite a lot longer than we’ve had it heating our house. But it’s working really well and the switch over to the backup boiler when the outside temperature went below -27°C ( our set point) was seamless and it kept the buffer tank at the best temperature for heating the house when the temperature dropped down to -41°C. We’ve had it working since the beginning of November so it hasn’t been that long, we don’t have an electric bill yet to see what our consumption was. We also are not living in it yet, still have some flooring and other finishing work to complete before we can move back in. You are absolutely correct in your video about using a generous amount of sealant with the Teflon tape, the plumber that did all the connections had to come back to re-do some fittings on the tank to fix the leaks. More sealant and not too much tape is the trick.

    Good job and best way to heat and cool efficient and without low co2…if the heat pump could be use solar voltage power, than the enrgy cost will be better and co2 is just perfect.Thx for this interest video-.LG from Germany 🙂
