Keeping it Old School: Why Horror Needs Practical Effects Over CGI and AI

Creepy Kid Characters Ranked: Horror Tier List
Terrifier 3 - I watched the first 2 and the kills I have to say are beyond gnarly. Made for uncomfortable watching so I don't think I could stomach the 3rd film.
I buy a popcorn tin every year. It’s not Christmas until I have my popcorn tin
I love popcorn tins. 😊
The first horror film I can remember ever seeing was Christmas Evil, so holiday horror has a special place in my heart. That said, a lot of it … isn’t very good, so thank you for giving me a couple I’ve never seen to check out!
Oh man, Christmas Evil! I love that one. And you're welcome. Which ones have you not seen?
@ Don’t Open Till Christmas - the cover looks familiar but if I’ve ever seen it, I don’t remember. And then that episode of Tales from the Crypt, which also sounds very cool!
Did your favorite Christmas horror make it to this list?
Weird. I have found that the more empathy the better one enjoys a film. Including horror. Some people are just squeamish and like to make excuses and judgements about other people. I like horror because it is exciting, scaring, and interesting. But I also like other genres.
Horror will always be my go-to genre. I also love superhero films and a lot of comedies. :)
And for some reason the wrong supporter screen was uploaded! Thank you to JWSJ, Fraze, Marlockie, JessicasBell, and TheFlatNoodle!
how recent are these AI videos? Lets see how Sora fares, they just start to roll out these. It will win once we can't tell the difference.
Recent as of three months ago, I looked for a very recent example. I kinda am with del Toro on this point.
@@TheTerrorificLady i'd like to be at the side of Toro, but i feel like i am against steam machines.
if a studio wants to use ai trained on stolen art to make their movies then I think it’s fair to watch the stolen version of those movies.
@@existentialdredd1666 yes and no ... whatever i did in my life that had any artistic tendencies were inspired by other artists before me. AI is more or less doing the same. It does create new image and video ... but yes, based on earlier videos. I am also sad that this fact is revealed this way.
What do you think? Do you think horror should stick to using practical effects?
😁So by that logic. Thriller films could've also overlapped with action films, because both action, and thriller use excitement, adrenaline rush, and tension. Now, does that make thriller very similar to action, because they both use these traits? Nope, because having one particular trait doesn't change the whole genre. That's just like saying that hard rock is very similar to metal music, because they both use heavier distortion. And, also thriller can also overlap with other genres as well. Such as crime, mystery, and war.
Thriller overlaps with a lot of other genres, that is true! And a large part of the confusion between horror and thriller: in the 90s, studios tried to rebrand horror as "thrillers," since they seemed embarrassed by the term and thought "thriller" would be more palatable. 😄
@@TheTerrorificLady Agreed. 😎
Ok. I have never heard of this before and now I'm intrigued and want to watch it. Since it's on Shudder, it will be added to the list. This is one of the reasons why I love watching your videos. I'm always learning and finding something new. Thank you for sharing!
You're welcome! I hope you enjoy. :)
Thank you for covering some British horror, Like the Threads, once seen, never forgotten.
You’re welcome! ❤ I hope you enjoyed the video.
first time i've heard of this. thanks for the fun bit of history
Thank you for watching! Ghostwatch is available on Shudder to watch if you are curious.
Did Ghostwatch freak you out when you first saw it?
Hey! Just subbed from Threats this is Penny :-)
Howdy! 🤠
My list 12. Original 1980. 11. Jason goes to hell 10. Part 2. 9. Part 6 8. Part 8. 7. Jason X 6. Part 7. 5. Part 4. 4. Part 5. 3. Part 3. 2. Freddy vs Jason 1. Reboot
We have the reboot in the same spot on our list! I’m curious as to why the original is in the bottom spot on your list.
Ash
Groovy. :)
I always loved the poster for Scanners. I have one from 1980 framed.
That is a wicked poster!
It was only after I started filming this video that I realized half my list came from 1987. Oh well. 😂 The next poster list I do I’ll change it up a bit!
1987 has some of the BEST movies IMO. Nightmare 3 is my fave movie poster! The one that used to scare the crap out of me was Puppet Master. I'm 42 and it still creeps me out!! Great Vid! 💀
Thank you! I didn’t realize half my list came from 1987. That year was stacked in terms of movies. Next poster list I do I’ll change it up a bit. Glad you enjoyed my first stab at doing something like this! 😊
The funny thing is, I think Thanksgiving itself is a horror holiday. Everyone dreads it, you have all that tension, just as you mentioned, Black Friday, retail shopping. I was going to comment earlier, but you hit every point I was going to make. I think people are craving something new as well, we’re all complaining about remakes and reboots, thanksgiving has a lane wide open for a smash hit. Maybe revolving around the tension of the holiday, plus the weird sandwiching of Halloween and Christmas to play into it. I’ll be thinking about this for a bit, I love coming up with horror movie ideas in my head. Ha
My Thanksgivings in the past were are horror holidays! For the last five or so years, they've been peaceful. But I'd still love to see a Thanksgiving horror movie! And looking forward to your ideas! :)
I think it has something to do with appealing to international audiences. Since Thanksgiving is very much an American holiday, you can really only market it well in the US. Canada has their own Thanksgiving but I don't think it has the same imagery as we have here. Halloween and Christmas however, basically the whole world celebrates. It may not be celebrated in the same way, but its the same basic idea where a film that takes place during a certain holiday will still have some sort of cultural relevance no matter where you view it.,
Some countries celebrate a Harvest instead of Halloween but totally get what you’re saying! I talked about that a bit in my video. 😊
Christmas and Halloween are…. feasting. While Thanksgiving and the other holidays get scraps.
😢😢😢 Yeah! Give us more holiday horror.
You should check out this movie called the last thanksgiving, it's pretty underrated I've been trying to tell more people about it, it revolves around Thanksgiving in an interesting way It feels pretty schlocky in a fun way But I do agree I think Thanksgiving and new years are very underrated horror wise
Christmas and Halloween are the holidays that get the most attention. Let’s set those aside and do more holiday horror!
@TheTerrorificLady most definitely especially since everyone has done almost everything you could think of with em it's time to let some other holidays get some love
Do you think we need more Thanksgiving horror? Yes or yes? Or also yes? ;)
I've covered over 375 movies for my podcast. Thats an average of 1 movie , 50 weeks a year, And I'm not getting tired yet. 😊🎉
Woo hoo! Horror is the bestest. :)
I have the briefest memories of the show as a youngling, thank you for educating!!
This is the show that got me to love horror...and it was all because of the Crypt Keeper. Thank you for watching! <3
omg i just made a comment on another video about how i would love to see this analysis- SO glad i found this video!!!
Hey thank you! This is an older video but it was fun to record and make. If you want analyses of other aspects of horror from the 70s - 2010s, be sure to subscribe and check out my newer content! - Terrorific Lady (Brandy)
Not much to add, you have summed everything up perfectly. Horror is an awesome inclusive genre - you want a horror comedy, we've got you covered, want some romance in there with your scares? Sorted. High brow, low brow and all in between, you've got it. But there always going to be journos who in a need to fill column inches will proffer their opinion based on half baked ideas.
Yep, journalists have always cried "horror fatigue." It's like the boy who cried wolf at this point.
I could never get tired of horror, supernatural, and thriller stuff. I'm 42 and my fave era is 80s horror. Great video!!
Hey we're the same age! Yay 80s babies!
I watch a LOT of horror. In fact, though less than last year, I am currently at having watched 125 horror films this year. But I mix in others too. 80s throwbacks, drama, action, scifi, and now we are heading into Christmas (which means: Serious Christmas, Raunchy Christmas Comedy, and Christmas Horror coming soon) My break from horror usually ends up being for a certain type: New and Serious Sometimes I just want to rewatch an older one. Something less serious or more familiar. (hence rewatching The Fog so often, or any other number of films...)
I don't keep track of how much horror I watch in a year. I usually just go with "a lot." :)
@TheTerrorificLady 😃 😀 😄 😁 There was a "Horror 365" thing going on that I tried to keep track on. But I dint like to focus TOO much on it, so I dont skip other films in fsvor of horror only (watched Deadpool and Wolverine today and now I am watching an episode of Elvira's Movie Macabre)
Hi, I do not see Carrie as a Villain, even though she takes many lives at the Prom. Following the rampage, she seeks solace from her Mother-which of course is denied. Carrie finishes the film with no one, so she turns her powers on herself. Her rampage was very general and this meant that innocents, unfortunately, perished too.
Hi! I always thought it was sad that Carrie had no one in her corner, so to speak. Those that were, were either traumatized or died. Thanks for your comment and insights!
1:05 it was the 1990s so the skating rink was the center of a kids social life. I always attended the in-costume skating event. Got nachos and rocked out to music and dressed as Cleopatra de Nile or the Crypt Keeper or the staple a black Cat.
I remember being in 5th grade and there being parties at our local skating rink. They were so much fun! And the Crypt Keeper! I love Tales From the Crypt so that is awesome. :)
Forgot to give the shoutouts to supporters: JWSJ Fraze JessicasBell TheFlatNoodle
I loved dressing up as Freddy. I just did my uearly watch if "Trick r Treat" this week, and "Tales of Halloween" about 2wks ago.
Ooh, Freddy! That's quite the costume. :)
We didn't really do Halloween in the UK. Parts of the Midlands had was called Mischief Night, but when we first tried Halloween as a kid we were met with puzzlement. Bonfire Night (5th November) was the big thing - huge bonfire, fireworks and very much a family + community affair. So towns still make a huge thing of it with costumes, parades and all culminating in a big show. Film wise - Trick r Treat has been a tradition since I was able to pick up region free blu ray when holidaying in Mexico, usually along with an Amicus portmanteau or Vincent Price in either Theatre of Blood or Dr Phibes.
That's cool that there are at least some celebrations (even if it's not Halloween!). And Trick r Treat is always a part of my Halloween tradition. Glad it's a part of yours too!
I have to watch Monster Squad, and then have a total B&W marathon. I think this year, I really need White Zombie, The Corpse Vanishes, and The Most Dangerous Game to come back in the rotation as a treat.
Monster Squad is a movie I need to watch! And having a very old school B&W horror movie marathon seems like the perfect thing to do for Halloween. 🎃
@@TheTerrorificLady Get some nice popcorn, and good candy!
What was your favorite costume or favorite thing to do on Halloween as a kid? And what Halloween-themed movies would you recommend to watch on Halloween?
That lack of ability to reason with him scares me. You HAVE to deal with the situation. Similar to Elm Street, where you HAVE to sleep so....yeah. I am really happy with how Terrifier 3 turned out and can't wait to see part 4.
Screw that. All episodes are on RUclips for free.
I recorded this quite a while ago (about a year ago I think), so that option wasn't available at the time of me recording this but awesome! I'm a big physical media person so I like having it to own. :)
Carrie isnt a horror movie, to me. Exorcist and Texas Chainsaw already came out so it also can't be said that Carrie is what horror was like back in the 70s.
Have to disagree with you here. Carrie is a horror movie due to the very nature of its shock elements (Carrie’s mother, the prom scene in particular). And there are different types and levels of 70s horror movies so not all of them are alike but all of them have a similar style and aesthetic they follow. 😊
I guess the review for The Thing is the most surprising, the others seem to be because of the expectation of the viewer - this isn't the fault of either party, it happens. But to claim that The Thing is poorly acted just sounds as if they're looking to be edgy.
Whether it’s their real feelings or not, at least they loved the special effects. ❤
What 1-star review surprised you in this video?
Halloween 4 was number 1 in the US box office for two consecutive weeks
It may have been #1 for two consecutive weeks but overall, financial-wise, it did not do well. $17.8 million gross (domestic) on a budget of $5 million. But financial sales to me don't equate how good a movie is. :)
i FINALLY watched the first one.. but then i found theres prior ones.. ive got some binging to do..
Better hop to it! 😅

Every Terrifier film likes to one-up itself; Terrifier 3 is easily my favorite of the franchise. Do you agree?
Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper, John Carpenter, George Romero, Jordan Peele, Jennifer Kent, Jen and Sylvia Soska, Karyn Kusama and Leigh Janiak are some of my top favorite horror directors out there on my list. Excellent work by them all. Absolutely a must watch on any and all of their films, especially since they created movies that became a part of horror history forever.
Really good watch thank you 👍🏼
