Why Bethesda Games Are Getting Worse
With the release of Starfield's Shattered Space DLC, this video essay will be taking a deep dive into the game, along with Bethesda's RPGs in general.
We’ll explore the evolution of Bethesda’s open-world adventures, from the medieval Elder Scrolls series and the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout, to their newest sci-fi release, Starfield. Through this analysis, we’ll see what sets Bethesda RPGs apart, how Starfield measures up against classics like Skyrim and Fallout 4, and pinpoint where Starfield may have missed the mark.
We’ll also delve into Todd Howard’s vision for Starfield, and talk about the future of Bethesda with the much-anticipated Elder Scrolls 6 and the potential Fallout 5.

Hogwarts Legacy: A Missed Opportunity?
Просмотров 14 тыс.2 месяца назад
Hogwarts Legacy is an "immersive" open-world action RPG that transports players into the magical world of Harry Potter. Developed by Portkey Games, this highly anticipated game allows fans to step into the shoes of a young witch or wizard and embark on a "thrilling" journey through the halls of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Set in the 1800s, long before the events of J.K. Rowling'...
Walking through any given block of Night City in 2077 and then looking at any clip of starfield NPCs just killed all the interest I ever had for this game
way tldr
I'm done with this unplayable games Bethesda is scam for selling to people broken content the Skyrim Anniversary edition came with the same 10 years old game breaking bugs for free how fun and enjoyable is that! Today i tried to get help from Bethesda web site support about quests that you are never be able to finish and progress in the game because of these same 10 years old bugs in the game that forcing you to reload old saves and losing a YEAR of progress or use console commands to finish the quest but no more achievements. Their answer was so incompetent and dumb: Try reload your game make sure you are in the right location or abandon a quest but there is no such a option in the game.
34:55 lol we felt the same, you just have editing skillz abs I do not
Starfield had so much potential. Almost all of it unrealised.
Huge cope. Ppl say star field plays like fallout 3. In real they all play like arena.
Spoiler alert: Todd Howard.
To everyone who thinks there was some sudden change and bethesda games got bad, they were never good to begin with, skyrim was dogshit, be real

Morrowind was the best 😊
The hair sticking up out of the helmet never stops being funny.
Pretty much every Bethesda game made past Skyrim can be summed up with one sentence: As wide as an ocean, but as deep as a puddle. My first Bethesda game was Fallout New Vegas, followed shortly by Skyrim, on the PS3. Recently, I bought Fallout 4, because a lot of people really enjoyed it, and hell, I liked New Vegas, so why not try it? I have never once been so disappointed by the things that a studio didn't do than when I played Fallout 4 for the first time. Don't get me wrong, the game is fine, I enjoyed the gameplay, but every faction feels half-baked at best and nonsensical at worst, the story makes little sense once you think about it for longer than 5 seconds (You're telling me Kellogg lived an extra 60-ish years from when we last saw him and didn't change in the slightest? Even synths age, for crying out loud) and the gameplay, while admittedly better than its predecessors in gunplay, is still incredibly outdated, even for its time. I haven't played Fallout 76, and I'm frankly afraid to, because I know that they cut even more corners with that, to the point where at launch there were literally no NPCs. I won't play Starfield, mostly because hard sci-fi settings don't interest me much, but also because from everything I've seen and heard about it, the game is just... Really, really bad. I'm not spending $60 on a game that I know is bad, that I go into knowing it will be bad, and that I leave having gained nothing from it. I'll probably not play TES6 if/when it releases for the exact same reason. It's just... Exhausting. TL;DR Skyrim was the last "good" Bethesda game and the studio as a whole has been riding that high for the last nearly 15 years.
11:45 Interesting choice of game trailer to bring up "choices mattering", considering the fact that *that* game has to now disregard 2 of the 3 possible choices its predecessor gave in order to even exist.
MY GOD IS THAT TRAILS OST IM HEARING THERE??
starfield saved my life from mental illness. Ill forever love it
I think Bethesda has basically always prioritized scale and quantity over depth; Arena and Daggerfall both made heavy use of procedurally generated content to pad out their worlds, so its usage in Starfield isn't off-brand. The problem is that they've begun to prioritize the quantity too much, putting too many resources into making as large of a world as possible without putting in enough effort into...literally anything else.
The silly way you play the game, a good RPG would be wasted on you. Just saying...
They need to show Todd Howard the door. He's outlived his creative usefulness. LOL He summed up Starfield with one line. "Exploring the planet you realize there is nothing for you to do".
Bethesda games always deliver satisfying gameplay for me.
Sturdfield
yoooooo trails in the sky music at 0:01 let's gooooo
I started with Morrowind, but my favorite has been Skyrim, weirdly enough. I remember the Morrowind story fondly and I really liked figuring out the best way to approach some quests, exploration was awesome too, and I loved that the world was unlevelled. But modded Skyrim is infinitely replayable to me. And while it removed some systems, it also added some, and the mods added more. I know, I know, game ahould stand on its own without mods. But I had fun in vanilla Skyrim too, while Starfield seems unsalvageable, no matter what modders do - the core is rotten.
1:08:09 wait, so the reward in NG is that you can skip parts of the game? The BENEFIT the game gives you is that you dont have to play it? Who thought this was a good idea?!
Say what you will about the newer Bethesda games, like Fallout 4 or Skyrim (and there's plenty to criticize there), but the exploration is still at the core of these games. To me that's the point of Bethesda games. That I can see an interesting landmark in the far distance, start walking towards it, get distracted by a dozen small things I run into along the way, and eventually find something to do at the destination. That's what you DO in a Bethesda game. And Starfield just completely ignored that part. The fact that locations just don't exist until you hear about them - not just are inaccessible until you figure out how to open them, but just straight up DON'T EXIST... And you can only fast travel to them. That has to be one of the stupidest decisions in the history of game design.
I remember the first time I booted up a pirated copy of Morrowind that I got from my sisters boyfriend. It blew my and all my friends' minds, just how large and free the game was, we were around 10 people that played Morrowind for probably 5-6 years as a small community.
So many buttons to press in the space ships but none of them do anything.
21:55 this is something that struck me when I started Cyberpunk 2077 - crowds of NPCs that might as well be Skyrim chickens for all they add to the game.
Dude I wanna watch all of this but you coming in with the mega soothing Bob Ross type ASMR voice doesn't make this easy 😭
I mean, you could have psuedo unique NPCs like Watch_Dogs especially if it's AI assisted or procedurally generated.
Bethesda's fatal flaw is that they ignore (and carry forward) the weak parts of their games and try to improve on what's already great. Their world building has always been great, but they continue to try to outdo themselves. They've never had a good combat system, and yet they do literally nothing to improve it.
Laziness and Leftists = boring world with no edge.
the game has the skeleton for amazing potential, if getting the cyberpunk treatment it could be a great title...never gonna happen but...very doable, as of now it is just pointless
Fallout 1 (on DOS) or Elder Scrolls Arena was it? Not sure which was first for me.
Man you got a great voice and way of speaking
They just suck at making games.
Melee mechanics could have gotten nuance utilization of directional melee attacks, by switching to melee when shields negate firearms on characters. AI and player switch to melee and have a kingdom come deliverance moment of one on one melee battle. Having a fighting style akin to Dune movies with sword, shield and dagger fights.
>why bethesda is getting worse >recaps his own playthrough
idk why but you saying "the only game my mom enjoyed watching me play" hit.
I would have preferred smaller but more alive city's.
If I had made this video, it would have been one second long and just be the word Microsoft in big, bold letters.
Morrowind was my favorite, but I also thoroughly enjoyed Oblivion as well as Skyrim on release. Playing Morrowind when I was in 6th or 7th grade, and I had to upgrade my graphics card from a 16Mb card to a 32Mb one just to run the game was a memorable experience. It was the first game I ever played that really let you do whatever the hell you wanted, and let you say kill someone and then steal your house which the later games actually wouldn't let you do because the chests and world would respawn and wipe out your items. Every game since Skyrim has mostly been a disappointment though, starting with Fallout 4 especially. I tried starfield for the first few hours and it was simply awful, especially coming out in a post Elden Ring and BG3 world, it's terribly dated. Even the story is trash, compare it to say Mass Effect which is over a decade older and it's not even in the same league.
High quality new documentary RUclipsr using Trails series OST for the intro?! Hello, where did you come from?!
Crazy views for second ever video but a really good one, so it checks out. Ngl, I haven't played a Bethesda game in years and this is probably a good take on why.
Starfields “moment” for me was when I had put 70 hours into it without ever stepping foot into the Constellation Lodge. I was telling my lifelong buddy how much fun I was having just exploring. He talked me into doing the main storyline. Playing the game Bethesda wanted you to play is what ruined it for me.
Hurry up and shit on Starfield already
spend 20 years calling every game they make the best game of all time, and the studio is bound to start seeing what they can get away with.
as it is everywhere else, its DEI rearing its inadequate head
Smooth brain comment. Look the games suck but its intellectually lazy to claim that DEI is what’s making the games bad when it’s bad writing, story telling, bad graphics and boring gameplay.

After multiple dogshit name people still think that Elder Scrolls 6 will be good.
A fantastic debut
This is so relaxing 😊 A fresh breath of air from all the yell tubers out there
