Peak 7552 Climb October 2021 - USA 🇺🇸
#northcascades #peak7552 #cutthroatpass #northwest #pacificnorthwest #mountains #mountaineering #alpinism
What started as an attempt to climb Porcupine Peak, ended in going way off-route, and ending up in chaos-town too far away from where a decent line to the Porcupine summit could be managed.
Rather than admit total defeat and go home, we continued on around the big cirque near Cutthroat Pass, and found a high point along the rim of the cirque that was a distinct point, and bagged that as a consolation prize.
It was not a very technical ascent, but it did have some great views, and kept the day from being a total bust. And the route for it starts at the Bridge Creek TH, as per Cutthroat...

Is that Donegan Creek you're referring to you followed up or was is before that from the start of Hannegan Pass trailhead do you recall? Once up on the ridge the traverse from Chardonnay to Granite to Hannegan Peak looks pretty straightforward with some fun scrambling inbetween? Appreciate any advise you have to offer here!

      It should be visible in some of my panoramic shots - and on my FB album of it. It looked like a decent amount of snow on the north sides of peaks along the Hwy 20 area, but the standard route for Black Peak comes at it from the south, so it should be melted out

      Yes, there is one special mineral unique to the Golden Horn Batholith called Okanoganite which is quite rare and found nowhere else. Smokey quartz crystals reported up to 2 feet long have been found over the years at a number of locations, some right along the highway. Didn't actually have TOO bad of a time on this one... But it really requires going up with someone who knows the early part of the trail. My brother and I went up to try and attempt Blum earlier this year, and we couldn't find the trail after a few hundred feet, and kept brush thrashing for like an hour, then gave up The route from this video was already overgrown and a PIA to go up

I feel like it would be less troublesome to do it as part of the Watson-Bacon-Hagan-Blum Traverse, and then tackle basically all these peaks from the alpine, rather than shwacking up from a river valley start

    • @DawnchaserTheAdventurer
      @DawnchaserTheAdventurer Год назад

      We brought them as precautions for the lower section of the approach - it gets pretty damp and dewy in the valley near the creek, and we left early enough in the day we expected wet duff and slick moss, and we figured crampons and ice axes might be useful for those sections And it turned out we were correct We might not have even been able to do this climb if we hadn't had crampons for the mini-cirque at the head of a creekbed we went up. It was steep wet, and exposed, and unprotectable for a good 50-60 ft. So it turned out to be helpful very early on to have conventional ice tools there

If you start from where my track begins right off Hwy 20, then look for my orange flagging tape in the trees, and proceed uphill. It's super straightforward... But steep. The crux of the climb is the mossy cliffy bit overlooking that boulder field at the top of the forest slopes. What about going down on the gully? Dangerous?

    • @DawnchaserTheAdventurer
      @DawnchaserTheAdventurer 2 года назад

      You know, it feels sketchier on the way up than it is on the way down. You do need to be cautious, but the right footholds become obvious on the way down, and there's a steel cable (and some old very sturdy bolts) you can keep ahold of in a couple spots. I've scrambled that gully a couple times, and it's not too terrible. It's better than Wallaby, imo

    • @DawnchaserTheAdventurer
      @DawnchaserTheAdventurer 2 года назад

      only reason it took me 3 tries to summit this peak is cause the summit block looked impenetrable from the top of the gully just face-on. This time around, my climbing partner was an experienced trad rock climber with 30+ years experience in that arena, and I let him lead the route. Turned out to be nowhere near as sketchy or technical as I expected, but an extra pair of trained eyes really helped this time around. That's why I video documented this, too. So other folks'd know exactly what to expect
