AltMill Assembly Part 18 #AltMill
What a great way to control your dust collector, so thanks for sharing your method. I am increasingly impressed with the functionality that the Sienci Labs folks have incorporated into gSender! Just one point to consider if you haven't already thought of it: ensure the dust collector stays on long enough after the spindle stops, to clear any dust out of the hose. As for myself, I've connected my shop's central cyclone dust collector to my AltMill. That system has a 3HP single-phase 230 volt motor so unlike your dust collector, I'd have to invest in a much more expensive IOT relay, which isn't something I'm in a position to do. Until I can afford it, I'll follow the same routine that I perform for the rest of my woodworking equipment: turn on the dust collector prior to turning on the CNC, then off when I've finished operations.
Thanks for the great suggestion about the dust collector run time; I will definitely add it to my routine!
Welcome to the world of CNC milling! I, too, own an Altmill, however I'm a few months behind you as I have just completed its assembly and am going to be milling the spoilboard today if all goes well. It's my second CNC; my first was a Sienci Labs Longmill MK 1 which I owned for 3 years and it was a terrific introduction into CNC operations. I watched the development of the AltMill and pulled the pin back in April; it was a L-O-N-G wait for it, but well worthwhile as you know. I'd like to recommend you consider reducing the size of your spoilboard the next time you need to replace the planks. The reason being is that you can't lay down any pieces that are longer than the milling area, as the shoulder left along the perimeter won't allow them to lay down flat against the spoilboard. Just an observation based on my years of experience. Lastly, are you planning to incorporate vertical milling capabilities one day? I am, and because of that I've laid my spoilboard pieces parallel to the X-axis, so that when I cut out a cavity to allow boards to be set vertically (for making dovetailed joints for instance), then I won't be cutting through any or my hold-down bars. If this is something you're thinking of doing, then let's get together to compare ideas. Two heads are better than one! All the best, Marty
Great suggestions, I will definitely follow your suggestions next time I replace the spoilboards
Awesome video thanks for sharing. Ordering my Altmill soon. Good luck with your projects,
Thanks for the feedback! Good luck with your new machine and your projects.
How much hours in total did it take to put together out to box to getting it to cut?
Hello, It took around 8 hours solo until the first project. including some try and error
I have a similar dust collector, im really disappointed by the dust collection performance. I'll have to figure out a better solution.
It’s working perfect for me. Are you sure there is nothing blocking air flow?
@@Ideasandthings In your video dust is flying everywhere wherever it crosses the T-tracks.
Yes, That’s true when I started surfacing. I found out that I forgot to open the gate for hose to allow air flow. Once I opened it, It worked like a charm for me.
came out nice my cnc altmill arrives in oct almost here my first cnc...
nice 👍
great video mine arrives in oct my first cnc...
How did things go (it's now November...)?
Very cool!! 👍👍👍😃
Wow, that project is really cool!! Yeah, the Altmill is a hell of a machine, that's for sure!! ❤❤ Was this project your design, or can you tell me where you got it from? My wife would absolutely love this.
Looking good. Mine arrives today. Check your feeds and speeds, you can move much faster and you'll increase your tool life. Do a very fast cutout leaving a little axial stock, then a clean up pass to dimension.
That came out well on what looks like mdf
I will do it using wood. It’s just the mdf was not thick enough to show the beauty of the relief. I was just testing the AltMill in relief carving in a cheap material.
For my Altmill I'm purchasing my spindle and VFD separately, they are gonna be very similar(from the same factory) but 2.2KW, the VFD looks identical on the outside. I will need to do my own wire for it. I wonder how difficult wiring it would be since I never built a CNC Before, only 3d printers. Do you think wiring the Spindle/VFD to the rest of the system (I Assume to the Longboard) will be difficult?
I can not confirm. But, I don’t anticipate issue with that
@@Ideasandthings I've been looking into it a bit more, the wiring actually doesn't seem hard, I think the programming of the VFD might be harder tho
Have you owned or operated any other popular CNC router machines that you can compare to the Altmill? Just curious as it's looking like a promising machine.
This is my first owned CNC. So, I cannot really provide an educated response. However, I’m trying to push the limit in every project I do and did not reach the limit so far
I have mine hooked up currently to turn on the Makita Router, I do have a contactor that I plan to use to turn on dust collection as well but I think with both hooked up it will be more than 12a so I haven't gotten around to installing the 120v contactor yet. Also, I have edited my post processor to add the M8 and M9 to the Gcode so I don't have to fake it with Gsender. Good work Partner.
Thanks Larry. I did not think of post processor option before. I will try to explore it. It will be better so if a new version for Gsender comes, I don’t have to worry about updating it with the commands.
The dust pickup is a vast improvement over the Longmill MKIs!
Did you surface the spoilboard without tram the spindle ?
I did the tramming. I just forgot to record it in the video
👏👏👏👍❤️ Nice!! Keep us posted.
Great videos. They will be a great help when I receive my Alt.
Thank you. If you have any questions when setting your AltMill, Please feel free to send a message.
That’s so awesome, congrats my friend!!! 😀😀😀 what feed rate did you run the inside big pocket toolpath at? And did you buy tje King Industrial dust collector from Busy Bee?
Hello, Feed rate is 100 inch/min and spindle speed is 20000 for the pocket. For profile, the spindle at lower speed of 15000. Regarding Dust Collector, I think I got the best bang for the buck based on my criteria. Based on my research to have an adequate cfm for cnc I need to have a dust collector with 900 cfm or higher. I choose to get the highest I can get for 110v with a brand that I tried their support. King Canada have good machines and very good support. And 1.5 hp with 1200cfm dust collector with 1 micron canister filter. A discount was running at Atlas Tools&Machinery about a month ago that’s when I bought it. The highest busy bees has for 120v is 1.5 hp with around 950cfm. I hope I was able to address your question. If you have any other questions please feel free to reach out.

Thank you for showing us the new Altmill. I wanna get one and hoping if you could tell us a few things since you’re one of the first to show us it. How long did it take to fully assemble? Is the table sturdy when the machine is running? And finally, does Senci Labs provide cable management or did you have to configure all the cables yourself? Again, thank you for sharing!!! Look forward to watching you do a project and hearing back from you with my simple questions. 😊😊
Hello, It’s amazing machine. It took about 10 hours of assembly as this is my first cnc and I assembled it without extra hands. The table as it is needs little bit of a support as the machine feels very powerful comparing to the tableI legs. I did a little bit of work and will show it in the next video for final assembly. it improved the table sturdiness a lot. I will be able to provide. credible conclusion after running few projects. Regarding cable management. Each cable is packed in a plastic bag. The assembly guide is very good in walking you through the process. Cables plugs are error proof so no cable will go to the wrong socket. Having said that, I recommend reading the cable section couple of times to be clear on the steps so you don’t undo and redo. If you have any more questions, Please feel free to ask.
@@Ideasandthingsthank you so much for the reply and detailed videos of your assembly adventure. 😀😀 i think anyone who has bought or is buying an Altmill is grateful for the video series you put out, it’s been very insightful. Can’t wait to watch you run the machine!!! Good luck and congratulations with the new Alrmill!! Enjoy it my friend.
