Hangar 9 Fokker DVII - F4 Competition Flight
Просмотров 7 тыс.4 года назад
My final flight of the F4 Scale Nats of 2020 in GR, in the newly asphalted runway of the Edessa gliding club in Northern Greece. Dead calm weather but with variable gusts generated by the thermal activity of the area (mountains, lake) which is a also a 1:1 gliding Mekka for this reason. Attempted take-off and landing with cross-wind - WWI biplanes don't particularly like that. Sun was also dead...

A FAI F4 Practice flight with my H9 Fokker DVII powered by a Valach 60 4-stroke. Mainly some basic maneuvers, flown maybe a little too fast for a proper contest scoring. The plane is so stable and great fun, the 4-stroke sound suits it very well.

Thank you!!!
You’re one hell of a craftsman. Any chance you have recommendations on where to download a paint template for lozenge camouflage pattern for this plane? Looking to repaint mine. Many thanks

@@darrenoliverio7259 Thanks for the feedback. In retrospect maybe I could cut to the flying quicker, but had too good a time that day and decided to let the whole vid run for posterity! Be well.
Did you struggle to install that? How did you do that?
Not a great idea your pulling the lubrication oil away from each cylinders cam shaft, facing down would be better.
Hi Martin, you are right; gravity does not help in that respect. I took some precaution to thoroughly pre-lubricate these parts before the run up. Haven't had a problem... Facing down may turn the same problem to the big end (which seems more sensitive to oil starvation). Rgds, Hector.
Flight weight? Thank you
12.8kg if memory serves...

Not this one. Model Y has a long moment and is consequently as tame as a trainer... Shame its not available anymore.
I got this engine laying too! All fresh and new very intersted why you would brake it in like this and for how many runs. Also how do you start it safely like this?
Rich setting floods the lower cylinders by gravity, so they do not heat-cycle fast like the top cylinde, which is lean for the same reason. (Non atomised mixture swirls in the distribution chamber before entering the intake tubes and settles unevenly when rich). Safe starting is indeed a weakness of this method; use caution! I did this for 3 liters, until I could lean out the engine and get even temps at 75% throttle (this is my tuning method; temps, not rpm)

By the way your video was an inspiration for me to do the same. I love the weathering you've carried out on to the covering. I had been debating about recovering mine. However I intend now to flatten the surface and spray on the Ultracote.
Glad you liked it! Thread on RCSB: www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=31344&PN=4
I'm about to use the same motor as you have installed in your H9 Dvii. What modifications did you make to the firewall? Many thanks.
Hi Tom, thank you for your message - glad to have helped you make your decisions! Thank you Sir!
Good video!
I wish they were still available
Yeah. Typical H9 approach; they produce a nice plane for 1.5yrs, then goodbye. Most probably the marketing idea is "get one while you can"... Although there is another version from ECOMRC, which appears to be the same model in blue, minus the nice H9 fittings/detail and the 3 piece top wing.
*Let the Sunshine In.* “E pluribus Unum"
What motor are you using
A Valach VM-60 single 4 stroke.
have a Zenoah 62 in my one sounds great 24x8 prop very scale cant go wrong with a zenoah
Did you use a 90 degree bend for the carburetor? I am considering a Z62 too.
What size fs engine do you recommend?
The plane is powered by a Valach 60cc, which suits the plane very well. A TorqPro70 would also work. 40cc is marginal in 4 Stroke (OS GF40, Saito FG40, NGH38 will be too weak IMHO).
Nice i am saving up to get this plane with the same power setup as yours.. valach 60 rocks on this plane!!!!
Great. Let us know how the project goes. A TorqPro 70 will also work.
YOU NEED TO FLY FATHER AWAY WE CAN STILL SEE THE AIRPLANE

great plane and great sound, and flown beautifully as well. May I ask what engine and size it is please
Hi Warren, thanks. Engine is a Saito FG-90R3 with a Meier exhaust ring and a 24x10 prop.
Hello, super nice plane, top weathering...received mine, will also place a Valach 60ccon it, so I’m following your build on the Greek Forum...with google translate, Lol...but a small question, I will also do the scallops, same as yours...are you willing to send me the measurements you have calculated to cut them out ( distance between each scallops ( I saw 7,7cm on the pictures with the tape on the TE)and depht of the cut, from te TE) already many thx and thanks for the build topics on your forum. Peter
Hi Peter, glad the build was of use to you. There is also a (shorter) build presentation over at RCSB (in English, of course). Look under ARF makeovers. Now, with regard to the scallops: what I did was to mark the location and count the number of scallops from a 3-view, then divide the TE to give me this exact number. Due to the fact that the division would not work out completely, for the lower wing panels the last outboard scallop was cut a little longer. I do not have the figures noted down (I discarded the measurements along with the paper tape upon completion of the cuts...), but I can say that the lower wing has 9 scallops, with some offset from the fuz (no scallop) and the first 8 are 7.7cm x 0,5cm deep at the peak of the ellipse. For the top wing, you need to account the wing joint and aileron ends as peaks, then divide the distances to get 12 scallops per panel/side, 2 of which will be on each side the center section, 4 will be in the fixed TE of the wing panel and the 6 rest on the aileron. Again 0.5cm deep at the ellipse center. The scallop length was 8.3cm, apart from the right outboard which was a little longer. Hope this helps! Good luck with your build, the mods are worth it.
@@hpergm hi, Manny thx for you feedback...will use these info for sure...luckely on you forum, I can use google translate and it works well, so I can follow quiet wel the conversations hehe....the engine will be the new Fiala, they have bought Valach motors..so same engine, different name on it....and probably the 70cc....( almost no weight difference between the 60 and 70cc...).’did you use extra weight with that engine? I should think not? Grts from Belgium, Peter
@@BeFreeparaglider With the 60, the CG was SPOT ON @ 127mm (could not believe it, not 1 extea gram needed anywhere). The CG on the manual is great, all flying videos are with this CG.
Beautiful plane and what a beautiful flying field where are y'all at
Considering the description says Northern Greece, I’d say there in Northern Greece.
Great video showing the competition maneuvers! Thanks for sharing. In CA, we have had some great practice sessions to practice scale contest maneuvers. Bill Hart, member of the Scale Squadron and OCMA fly club help to organize the practice sessions. We had some advance flyers that have competed in Scale Master contests helping to judge and help to call for the pilots. It was great experience. And your video is great to show what it takes to do the maneuvers. Not easy!!! Especially the Lazy 8; remaining at the same altitude as you start at thru the entire maneuver to the finish. You did great! I am still practicing. Takes a lot of practice to do well, but like you said, and also Bill, it is fun and the practice gets one ready for the competition. Scale RC Modeling is a great hobby. Perfecting the building skills, the flying skills, and enjoying the people that share in the hobby is what it is all about. Thanks again for sharing and good luck in the future.
Thanks for your feedback. Back in my 3D days, I remember mocking the Scale bunch flying boring turns all day with their overweight fragile contraptions. Then one of those guys challenged me to fly "just a perfect descending 360, try to make it look like a 1:1....". The rest is history!
Amazing flight. This is a bird I would love to have but my car isnt big enough for transporting it haha
Been there done that. True RC dedication comes from... carefully selecting your car to fit your models :-) (don't tell that to my wife).
How did you put the scaloping on the wing trailing edges!
Very easy. Just mark carefully the scalloping spacings on a paper tape stuck on the trailing edge, cut with an X-Acto and paint the raw wood red. See pics here: www.aeromodelling.gr/ForumS/index.php?topic=57429.msg322178#msg322178
Fantastic model, love the valach engine, is it easy to tune?. I saw your build thread and it looks like the needles are in an awkward place. Appreciate your feedback. Cheers.
Hi Marino. The engine is practically set-and-forget, as long as you give it enough time on the bench to bed-in and achieve the proper tune. In the model, the needles are accessible through 2 small holes on the top of the cowl.
Thanks for your reply, I'm going with the same engine as my roto 35 fs is not enough power. Cheers and thankyou.
What model Valach are you using?
@@kmarshall100 The 60cc single.

Thank G Man. Truth be told, the plane almost flies itself - it's so stable.

Fabulous! thanks for posting
Thanks!
👍🤟
My first impression is that the VM 60 has too big a prop on it to allow it to rev up, or I am just so used to howling 2 strokes maybe? What prop was it please and thanks? Did you steel wool the covering or spray some clear matt on it to get that antique finish?
The VM 60 is a long stroke, high torque motor. Max rev limit is 5,500, so it likes to be loaded down. Prop is a Fiala 24x10 and will do 5,350 on the ground.
The finish is weathered with model acrylics and sprayed with 2-pack automotive matt clear.
@@hpergm 5,500 explains a lot. Great job, thanks

I have this same engine and because of you I am going to break mine in this same way. I have not been able to fine anything wrong with it. After looking at your other videos of this break-in it appears that it worked very well. Thank you for posting the videos. I also bought a fg33r3 at the same time and will break it in this way as well.
Hi Mathias - thanks. Best of luck with your new engine!
Genius idea with the vertical mount. So many mods alternating the engine cylinders to top position during breakin.
Why mount the engine in vertical?
Running in at very rich settings floods the bottom cylinders and they refuse to light up. Keeping them all at the same horizontal plane (engine vertical) allows them to all light up and properly heat cycle. Vertical running is not necessary after the first 2-3 tanks.
Were those temp readings in C or F?
Celsius..

Gear are junk. Invest in Sierra gear. !!!!
You are perfectly right. I got the Sierra gears for my FW190
At least on O.S. engines, new ones, when going back to idle to cool down, open HSN almost one full turn to use that excessive fuel for cooling and lubrication. Once revving again, close the amount that was opened be it 1/2 to one full turn.
Forwarded to see the landing, with that tall grass it was obvious... nice flying, and awesome four stroke sound!
Sounds great too
It's not a she. It is a FW 190 for the love of God. FW 190 was the most feared plane In ww2. Absolutely deadly armament. 4 20mm cannons and two 7.76 mgs. With an option for 2 additional 20mm cannons in the mid wind underside section. This plane is not a she. It is a terrifying beast that takes no prisoners and eats P51's and P-47's for breakfast lunch and dinner. And for a late night snack this horrific monstrosity will gobble up a few F6F Hellcats. Calling this man this God this beast a she is like calling God a Fag to his face. Not to mention a plane with kind of reputation could never have a vagina. Just balls. Huge disgusting balls. Respect the FW 190, my grandfather new best and he always said respect the FW. They were to be feared. Also the Germans felt this same way about the Yak 3P. It was the yak that didn't have the front intake, which made the plane appear to be smiling as it faced your direction. The germans pilots were all earged to tuck tail and go the other way if they saw one of these nonsmiling yaks. They were by far the absolute most feared plane and for good reason it was a plane that could turn better than a spitfire and had the speed of a D model FW. But the most important thing were its three nose mounted 20mm shvac cannons. Nose mounted cannons are very accurate and those rounds were armor piercing incendiary shells. Best to just let them go about there business. I tell you what go buy Volkswagen beetle and you can have your she. SHE has no place among warbirds of WW2. JUST BALLS. and the dicks who flew them. Haha lol. Just kidding, or am I???
She still looks great. Dave
Yes he does!!!🤔
Eats P-47s for breakfast? You need a history lesson. The P-47 Thunderbolt was responsible for clearing the skies of FW190's for D Day.....
@@SOLDOZER my grandad was a p47 pilot among other planes. My whole childhood was a huge nonstop history lesson. The American pilots absolutely feared the F.W. Grandpa told me years ago that a FW 190 and the right pilot that knew his plane was a leathal combination. I think I will take eye witness over here say any day. Besides the yaks the bf 109s and FW were way better energy fighters than the p47. This is coming from a guy that doesnt want to believe any plane was better than the p47. My all time favorite plane ever is the p 47. All good though. Everyone is entitled to there own opinion. Also D day was one day out of how many years?
