Matthew Govig
Добавлен 25 авг 2019
Im a 16 year old from the mountains of east TN working to preserve the traditional music of our mountain people and carry it on to future generations. This music, as with most every culture, has been misrepresented, and sold by outsiders, I hope to help in keeping our song and dance tradition alive as well as practiced among our people. Not just in the museums but in the social gatherings that our music is so deeply rooted in.
Matthew Govig - Man of constant Sorrow
Tuning is GDGAD.
Dick Burnett of Monticello Kentucky is thought to be the writer, and first published it in 1913 titled “farewell song”.
I am a man of constant sorrow, Ive seen trouble all my days, I bid farewell to east tennessee, the place where I was born raised.
7 long years Ive been in trouble, no pleasures on earth have I found, for in this world I must ramble, Ive no friends to help me now.
Farewell my own true fair lover, never expect to see you anymore, for Im bound on that southern railroad, hope I die upon the rail.
I am a man of constant sorrow, Ive seen trouble all my days, I bid farewell to my home country, the place where I was born raised.
You may bury me in some deep holle...

I learnt this off of Clifton Hicks, got my banjo in straight G tuning.
Matthew Govig - Wild Bill Jones (George Gibson, Clifton Hicks)
Просмотров 768Год назад
I learnt this from a number of people, most notably my mentor George Gibson, and also Clifton Hicks. Im in Pretty Polly tuning - starting out in straight tuning you raise the 2nd string one note to be in unison with the 1st string when noted at the 2nd fret.
Matthew Govig - Little Birdie

I learnt this from my mentors Clifton Hicks and George Gibson. The tuning is one I made myself: Its double C with the 5th string lowered 3 notes to be in unison with the 1st string at the 2nd fret.
Matthew Govig - Black Bottom Blues

Learned this from one of my mentors; Clifton Hicks. Im tuned in ‘double C’ or GCGCD, two notes down of course.
Matthew Govig - East Virginia
Просмотров 1 тыс.Год назад
This is a early song that likely originated among African Americans, I learned it from Clifton Hicks, and a recording of ‘Gran’ Orgis Hudson of Knott county KY that I acquired from my mentor George Gibson. The tuning is GDGCD, dropped down around 2-3 notes.
Matthew Govig - Shout’in Lula (Hook and line, Minner on a hook, etc)
Просмотров 763Год назад
Tuning - F A# F A# C This was one of the first songs I learned to sing in my childhood as my mother often sung it, she learned the words to it growing up in central Kentucky and attending square dances, as well as from my papaw; her father, who played it on guitar. She sings the typical Kentucky verses of Hook and Line. I later learned it on banjo from my mentors Clifton Hicks, and George Gibso...
Matthew Govig - Wild Goose Chase (Lost Gander)
Просмотров 3 тыс.2 года назад
Wild Goose Chase or “Lost Gander” as Dee Hicks called it, this is a tune from the Cumberland plateau around the TN/KY line. I come up with this version from hearing the playing of Clifton Hicks (no relation to Dee Hicks), Virgil Anderson of Wayne county KY, and Dee Hicks of Fentress county TN. The tuning is f# dead - the tuning used by both Virgil and Dee.
Matthew Govig - Cacklin Hen
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.2 года назад
The tuning is GDGBD, tuned down three notes. I learned Cacklin hen from Bobby Stooksbury of Anderson county TN. In Bobbys childhood days this region was still filled with oldtimers born in the late 18-early -1900s, traditional music, local tunes, and many skills and trades that have rapidly faded from the landscape of rural Appalachia. He learned many of these tunes, along with some of the skil...
Matthew Govig - My husbands a drunkard (Rare Grainger county TN song)
Просмотров 6 тыс.2 года назад
Im tuned GDGAD, im around two notes below that, at fcfgc I learned this from a set of field recordings done near me in the 1960s by Peter Hoover, It was played by Addie Leffew of Thorn Hill TN, who played it in F# DEAD. Its an exceptionally rare song, I have found no other recordings or mentions of it. “My moments are lonely, no pleasures Ive found, my husbands a drunkard, troubles my mind. You...
Matthew Govig- Coal Creek March
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.2 года назад
Coal Creek march (trouble at coal creek etc) , Learned from a friend of mine native to Briceville tn, where the battles took place. I obtained the verses from a different source, Bobby Fulcher. Tuning- Standard gdgbd, of course my banjo is dropped down about three notes or so. Following the Civil War there states began leasing off prisoners to companies, however this posed a great threat to the...
George Gibson - Jubilee
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.3 года назад
The tuning is gdgcd "Coffee grows on the white oak tree, river flows with brandy, I've got a gal thats neat and fine, sweet as sugar candy" "Swing and turn, jubilee, live and learn jubilee" "If I had no gal at all, you would find me a crawling, up and down this rocky road, looking for my darling" "Swing and turn..." "Some come (a)round one Saturday, some come round on Sunday, if you'll give me ...
I've heard a lot of versions of that song and that one is right up there, love it!
I can’t hardly quit listening to this, it’s such a complex and unique version of this tune, and that Gibson banjo makes it sound so much better, great picking on this piece bud.
Excellent
✌️❤️from Kentucky
well done.
Just saw this on Instagram. Outstanding version Matthew.😊
Really good!
Awesome man , favorite version , really like your phrasing and use of flick.
I do believe Dick Burnett is the writer, but I believe he robbed some of the lyrics from other old tunes. Like East Virginia Blues, or Jack Monroe. Good picking.
I definitely agree. A lot of these old songs have been getting recycled and evolved for centuries.
Fantastic playing, and great lyrics too. Love the southern drawl! ;) Hello from the UK
whew that right hand is nuts!
been wondering where you been. looks like you've been mastering the 2 finger. wish my old claws could move like that. have a wonderful day!
Yeah, time kinda slipped by me, didn’t realize it’d been like 6 months since I posted last… Glad you enjoyed it! gonna work on posting more!
Great job young man. Keep it up.
Sounding great Matthew and I'm glad to see you back. Love the new fedora!
Damn lightning fingers
Smooth
Hellfire.
It’s sounds like a mixture of Lonesome Road and Trouble At Coal Creek, Great picking bud.
Good piece of music, I call that tuning Rocky Island tuning due to the fact everyone around here played Rocky Island in it. I play little birdie in a similar tuning but the second string is lowered considerably. Almost like tuning for German War or Ruben.
Glad you enjoyed it, you know of recordings that use that tuning? I don’t believe Ive seen it used, I kinda came up with it on my own just fooling around with different notes.
@@matthewgovig there is a video of George Gibson picking Rocky Island in it
Man…unreal. Great take on a great tune!
