MMOC National Stage Chats - Women and Diversity in Morris Minors and Car Clubs
Shame we can’t go back to simple straightforward motoring to get around.
Just Brilliant!! This is a great episode and just what is needed at this time of year. I was not aware of the Aston hill climb and given that anniversary it celebrates I shall do my best to get there. My late father and his cousin both belonged to your late employer (RREC - and I am most sorry that this did not work out as I am sure you wished but sometimes things happen for a reason). Anyway back to the RREC we when I was much younger (long ago!) used to go to their rallies in particular the annual one which in those days was at Blenheim and I remember it very well. I think it is worthwhile looking out for the marque annual gatherings as I think you can often go along as a spectator and there are certain marques where I should like to see a gathering of the best but do not intend to acquire one. Some specialist dealers also have ‘open days’ but as they have limited capacity do not publicise unfortunately. In this episode you cheered me up as two other things you also mentioned struck me. Prescott is another place my father used to take us as I am sure in those days it was associated with Bugatti and I am going to look up dates and finally the idea of a steam fair is a much longed for thought. We do not have many in west London but I will find one!! Thank you again more than you know.
If you're based in West London, the Bedfordshire Steam and Country fayre wouldn't be far for you, and it's truly worth the trip, if you find a hotel you could visit for multiple days and make a real trip of it, it's on the site of the Shuttleworth collection, so plenty to see! Absolutely agree, the events hosted by marque clubs often pull in some unusual stuff, and the best of the name which can be absolutely fascinating!
I also have had the misfortune to see the new Capri in my local area. Having had two Capris in the 1980s, a mark one three litre and a mark two three litre, both were brilliant cars in there time. I personally think the reusing of names from the past is like the designs of today which are totally devoid of any individuality or real effort on the part of the designers. In short my opinion of todays world we are unfortunately living in a very bland era.
Modern cars just don't have the character of vintage machines. The romance is gone. They are more like appliances made by robots. You can brand them with retro badging but it won't make them more interesting or collectible, what with all the computers and plastics.
It's a very good point, a lot of them do feel very different and more appliance like in places 🤔
Umm there wasn’t really any space in the back of a 70’s & 80’s Capri… well not if you had legs. I had to sit sideways across in the back of my sisters JPS Capri when a young teenager.
I'm not sure I said there was? I was comparing my Morris Minor and my Kia Picanto when I was talking about leg room. But that is a prime example of how consumers expectations have changed and how they would struggle to target their audience with a car that replicated that experience
Around 5:39 you comment “there’s useable space in the back”… but admittedly then go on to talk about your 😎
The short answer to your question (with some hesitation given their recent launch!) is a new Jaguar E-Type.. I am glad that I listened to the end because your comments on French cars seems very relevant. They seem to evolve (or rather did cf. Renault 5) their designs more gradually, but then also can go left field. There was a comparable discussion on another podcast linked to a magazine where they discussed a similar topic and highlighted that today car buyers do not have the same relationship with their cars (and marques) that they once did. I am a geriatric and fortunate to have three classics which when I see any of them brings me absolute joy. Is anyone in forty years going to say I must get a Tesla and restore it. Also on the matter of the comparative size please what is the point of a 4x4 supercar. I have seen both a Ferrari and Lamborghini 4x4’s in Central London but neither had an ‘Oh my!’ affect on me. Whereas I am sure if I saw Peggy or an original Fiat 500 they would have brought a smile to me and many more.
E-type is an excellent argument, definitely would evoke a similar reaction if not almost identical to the original design! The French brands do seem to be doing well - can't believe I forgot to mention how well done the Renault 5 is!
Couldn’t afford one back in the day ☹️
Re the Capri, for what it is (an EV) it is fine, but it's NOT a proper Capri - that was what Terry McCann drove in Minder (it was a white Mk II.)
Yeah no ones really talked about anything other than the use of the name, and while some might argue all publicity is good publicity, it's been rather negative because of the name and few seem to have looked passed it. At least in car circles, might not mean a thing to your regular buyer I suppose!
Vicky's Capri - is that the maroon Consul Capri I keep seeing on your channel? If so, very nice! 🥰
Yes it is! It's absolutely stunning!
Great to see you young ones do such a great job of inspiring others. Nice one, had my Stag out a lot as my 2013 Mini Cooper S is having water pump problems etc. (So my 47 years old Stag is in general use for a few days) Great fun. Cheers Bob,
Enjoy using the Stag! I'm sure it's raising some smiles!
My brother was a machanic that did M.O T`s,so I know what to look for,and I check my car often,it is my daily driver, and I am always trying to make her road worthy,I can do all the mechanics, and I can weld,so I suppose I am lucky, but you must keep your car road worthy!
You are lucky! And absolutely right road worthiness is so important 👌
@@passengerseatpodcast The thing to look at the most are the top and bottom trunnion joints on the suspension, make sure they are greased on a regular basis,I do mine once a year, and I grease the prop shaft and the handbrake cables at the same time,I f you do a lot of mileage do it twice a year!
Thanks for sharing your views on this Becca. Always appreciate it. 😊👍
Thanks Allan 😊
Cracking podcast this time. I love this subject. Over here in California, people drive around with me in my classics, which are just you know. Morris minor ado16 MGB okay and everywhere I stop people come over and fawn over the cars and they're they're not concours. Just driver cars. So I loved what you said about sort of being an advocate being a proponent and being ready to talk to people about them. My mom always said I had the gift of gab. I guess that's why I like owning (and dailying) classics. If I get stuck in a traffic jam, and look around me, people are looking at the car and smiling, taking a pic, or giving me a thumbs up. These days, if you can make folks smile you helped, that day.
Sounds like you've found some classics that really suit you and your life style! You're absolutely right traffic jams aren't so bad in a classic ❤️
Very well made points, especially regarding the suitability of the car to individual needs, and of course the MOT stuff.
Thanks Michael! You're right can't buy a classic car and disregard what it was built for an designed for and hope with enough perseverance it'll fit what you need regardless! And it's okay to accept a car your bought might not fit and try something else 🤷
I must say I totally agree with every point made I absolutely love daily driving my moggy but I definitely thought driving a classic as a daily was easy it’s definitely not for all the reasons you mentioned however the fun and positive aspects far outweigh the negatives for me I live in a small town and I don’t really go far out of town and if I do I generally use back roads to get my locations and adapt my driving style to the car and the roads I’m driving on and I must say for me my classic has been way more reliable than any modern car I’ve had I’ve had 2 breakdowns in nearly a year of ownership which I don’t think is bad going however I’m definitely doing more maintenance and fixing little things that pop up especially as it’s my only car
It's definitely not the easiest option but you're right, for the right people its worth it for the fun of it! 2 breakdowns isn't too bad going at all!
@ the main concern I have with daily driving a classic car is insurance I know I’m going to find it difficult to insure my moggy this year as I’m 22 and I’ve only been driving a year and a half and the moggy is my only car so It makes things difficult with insurance companies as they don’t want to insure the moggy as my only car
Not sure you'll want to hear this but the alternator on my Minor stopped charging last year but thankfully it was just worn out brushes which proved really easy to change and cost less than a fiver. Might be worth checking your old unit - if possible, it might be worth fixing up as a spare. The other comment is that, whilst I often buy bits online, I also use my local motor factors wherever possible. They sometimes struggle but when they cant find a Minor bit I give them newer alternatives that used A-Series engines - Marina, Ital, Allegro, Mini and then they often find a part that will fit. Two big advantages are a) keeping a local business ticking over and b) if it doesnt fit I can dash back and return it.
Ooo I still have my old unit so I might look into that! That's really helpful to know 😊
Still enjoying your podcasts. They are great. I find most jobs on old cars as well as newer cars take longer than you think. Especially if it's the first time doing it. It's different with regular maintenance items, oil and filter changes, tune ups with points, plugs , and condenser and timing. Or light bulb replacements. Once you do it and work out the bugs it's fine and something else you can do yourself. And that's good especially on old cars. Looking forward to your next podcast.
You're absolutely right 😊 always allow a fair few more hours than you expect 😂 thanks so much for watching 😊
It is infuriating when things don't fit or are substandard
I fitted an alternator from ESM in May this year on my Morris Minor 1098cc and have covered 2,500 miles in my daily driver since. The only problem was my old alternator did not have a threaded hole for the adjuster bolt, finding a suitable bolt in my spares Took longer than fitting the new alternator. Thanks for the Pocasts.
Ah I'm glad you've had more luck with them! That bolt issue sounds annoying though!
Thanks for sharing Becca 😊 👍
Thanks for watching Allan 😂
New subscriber. My Dad had a SE6 40 years ago, and ive had it for the last 20 years alongside my SE4. Yours looks and sounds great. Best place for parts either QRG or Graham Walker. Owners club is exceptional. Enjoy !The correct tyre on original wheels is 185 HR14 90, but tyres hard fo find in that size so people often go 195/70 or bigger depending on wheel fitted.
Wow thank you so much for all the advice! That'll all be really useful thank you! And welcome, thanks for subscribing!
Happy New Year Becca. Good to see you continuing to enjoy the wonders of the classic car community and champion the young owners. I saw Peggy at both Rustivals and, while she didn't look too bad to me at the first, the post restoration Peggy is absolutely beautiful. What a cracking job. Lovely that you were able to get hands on with the interior too. Hopefully I'll get a chance to say hello at the 3rd Rustival. Love the addition of Jaffa to the fleet too. They're great looking things. It'll be good to see what adventures you get up to. Hope you have a brilliant 2025
Happy New Year Becca and congratulations on a successful 2024. Looking forward to seeing what happens in 2025.😊👍
Happy New Year Becca! 🍾 I wish you very happy motoring in 2025. 🚗
Can't wait to meet Jaffa at whichever WDSC events he comes to! Also those back seats do look really comfortable. I'd probably have plenty of leg room back there. 😆
We will definitely have to try that 😂 you might be the target audience for the back seat 😂
Have you considered getting a spacesaver spare wheel? You could keep it in the back, rather than cooking a full-size spare under the bonnet,
That's not a bad idea actually 🤔 thanks for the suggestion!
Great choice of car! This year I bought a 1982 SE6b, on the road. Did plenty of preventative maintenance, as this is my modern runabout (although I don't daily drive anything). As long as you know what issues to check, and the car is basically sound, then it should serve you well - and be fun, of course :)
It is a lot easier (and more fun) getting a good car and keeping on top of preventative maintenance than struggling through a seemingly never ending list of issues...
Wry nice car, good luck to both of you. Have a good New Year. Bob
Thanks Bob, you too 😊
Lovely to see two young people enjoying such a great car. I have just bought one myself - I am very happy. Steve ps good use of mirrors - I wish that all drivers were similarly aware and considerate of other drivers.
Most people we've come across who have one seem pretty happy so that's good news! Enjoy yours! 😊
Excellent Becca, hope you both had a good Christmas 🎄
You too Allan! 🎄😊
I reckon it should be OK - there's always an element of luck with old cars, but parts shouldn't be too much of a problem. Reliant has an excellent owners club too. Oh, and did you know Princess Anne had one? 😂🤣
Yeah I'm hoping we've got quite lucky with this one - I believe Princess Anne had a few 😜
🎉😢😮
Sorry to hear about the demise of your garage in a box. That's what they call them here. I had one of those and the covering was ruined in a hurricane. The framework wasn't damaged but wasn't really worth putting a new cover on. Glad your cars didn't suffer too much damage. Enjoy all your podcasts and looking forward to more.
Thanks again for sharing Becca, glad both you and Peggy survived the storm 😊👍
I don’t think even the best car covers are good for an old car as they tend to get a lot of condensation underneath.
@@julianday yes, we've had issues with that before, but it sometimes depends on a less of two evils I guess if the car itself isn't too waterproof 😂
Another excellent interview, and a very interesting man. Thanks Becca all the best Bob
@@Bob-rn5ho thank you very much Bob 😊
I'm around 90 minutes drive away from the cafè but recently I diverted there on the way back from a visit to Bicester and it was really worthwhile. Now I need to find more excuses to end up there:-)
@@Mark_T it's definitely a must do when you're in the area! Or close enough a diversion isn't too much!
Thanks for sharing Becca, awesome you got to see the cars in London. That would be a dream for me. It looked like a great day out. 😊👍
It's a fantastic thing to see!
I love the event, but yes, over stimulation is one unintended side effect of such an enormous and diverse event. Next time I go I'm going to take some ear plugs (all that hubbub is noisy!) - and possibly an inflatable sofa to rest my legs on 😂
That sounds like a brilliant plan 😂
Thanks for sharing Becca, glad the NEC show was a success 😊👍
Me too! Thanks for watching! ❤️
Wow very good and nice going! George is a lucky guy.
Brilliant interview becca lovely to see a guy like george speak so passionately about a car thats been part of his family so long.
Thank you - yes it was so nice to listen to and it clearly means so much to him and his family!
Fantastic interview - my favourite YT video from the show this year.
That's so kind of you, thank you very much! It's certainly one of my favourites I've recorded!
What a fantastic interview with George, such an interesting man and a great view to life with a classic car. Many thanks Bob
He was truly fascinating - and we barely touched on his life in TV, probably hundreds more fantastic stories there! Glad you enjoyed it too!
I can't claim 40 years, but I think I first went to the show in 1992 (a mere 32 years ago) and certainly not with the same car! The Singers looked lovely. 😎 Great show this year and I saw many of our favourite RUclipsrs, including yourself.
32years is great going! Great to have met you and I'm glad you had a great time 😊
Thoroughly enjoyed this video and how wonderful to see George of ‘Manor Park Classics’ fame!! I would have loved to have been at the show in 1984.
George is excellent, an asset to Manor Park and so many fantastic stories! The 1984 show would have been really something!
Did you get the brake lights fixed? They didn't appear to be working🙁
Love the jumper
@@davidj4662 ha thank you 😂 it's quite fun I think!

Morning Becca , just as a one off, can we actually see you do a genuine cold start on your car? , The only reason I ask is just to compare it to our 1967 Moggy , my wife and I would really appreciate it X
