Street Photography in Portland with the Leica M5
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.Год назад
In my last video I talked about my new 50mm lens that I got to practice shooting that focal ken more. This video documents my first time going out with this lens to shoot. It’s also my first time intentionally shooting street photos for a longer session. In total I was out for about 3 hours and shot in the Pearl District in downtown Portland, as well as around Cathedral Park and downtown St. Jo...
Getting Over My Hatred of 50mm Lenses
Просмотров 596Год назад
I've never liked using a 50mm lens. It's always a little too wide, or a little too tight. But for some reason I've felt the need to try and fix my relationship with the 50mm focal length. So I bought a TT Artisan 50mm f1.1 for my Leica M5. Hopefully it wasn't a total mistake... Instagram: linktr.ee/ethanlyle
How Many Film Cameras Is Too Much?
Просмотров 6 тыс.Год назад
With film photography, its easy to want to buy all of the awesome gear thats out there. Over the years I have collected many different cameras, and while I try to use them all, often I gravitate to one or two, leaving the rest to sit on a shelf. Hopefully in making this video, I will remember why I bought these cameras and start to use them more often, and not leave them to sit and be wasted. W...
Lomography Turquoise with the Leica M5

I'm jumping into the deep end with some Lomography Turquoise 35mm film. This is my first experience with this film and have been really excited to try it out. After shooting this first roll, I've found that while it is a strange looking film on the surface, it has a lot going for it, and I think theres a lot of room to make so pretty great images with this film stock. Pick up a roll and try it ...

Ilford HP5 with the Leica M5
Просмотров 3,7 тыс.Год назад
These photos I took in the fall of 2022 after my wife and I moved to a new part of town. Since then I've been making an effort to document more about where we live and the little details of our life. I've been shooting with the Leica M5 for almost a year now, and honestly it has been a great experience. I wasn't sure if Leica was worth the hype, but after shooting on the Fuji X100 for a while, ...
Good pics, enjoyed the narrative. The older cameras are less clinically slick, and I like the look. Good eye for interesting compositions, too. Did you do 250 or 500 for shutter speed? All your movements seem sharp, which is cool.
Good question! I shot in aperture priority at ISO 400. My F-stop was usually between f4-f8. Thank you for watching!
If you want to enjoy street photography Get a DSLR with A CCD sensor like the Nikon D70 and get with it a cheap 50 mm You will be surprised with the results from that camera with its CCD sensor I know it’s somehow a big camera compared to that Olympus but it’s worth the try …
Those old CCD Nikons are really cool
Nice shots! I definitely prefer the commentary on the video.
@@just_eirik Thanks! I appreciate the feedback
Agreed!
How did you overcome the light meter batteries "issue" ?
@@torunadwisla There are adapters you can buy that let you use modern LR-44 batteries.
La Leica M5 es perfecta, un visor luminoso, fotómetro preciso y el dial de velocidad fácil de localizar sin quitar la mirada de la escena.
Another Leica fairytale. Everywhere I go it is another Leica fairytale.
Wait till I talk about my Holga
I had one but the meter was completely unreliable (like -/+ 2 stops at least, way less reliable than my sunny 16 skills) and it’s hardly impossible to get them fixed, so I ended up selling it and bought an M2, which I like a little more design wise and it has no meter at all to fool me. I think that the meter is the main drawback of this cameras.
Difficulty of repair is something I forgot to mention. It’s definitely a drawback for the M5 as well.
COST. Sure. Every photographer older than 30 wishes for a Leica. We all used to want a Hasselblad. Then, We grew up and got over it.
👍
You mention not being able to use certain lenses and I don’t quite understand. Why can’t you use all the m mount lens options on an M5?
The M5 has a different light meter than other Leica cameras. It has an arm that moves up in front of the shutter curtain to give a through the lens metering. Some lenses go too far into the camera body and could block and damage the meter. Hope that makes sense.
I have run about 4 or 5 rolls through my new M5 and I also love it
50% missed focus with a Canon AE1? My first “real” camera was an AE1 about 45 years ago. I can’t imagine missing focus 50% of the time with that camera. Certainly not my experience even as a total newbie to photography.
I think my issue with missing focus with my AV-1 is mostly from shooting close with a shallow depth of field. That’s where I tend to miss. But who knows, maybe I’m in the minority on that.
I've owned and tried many Leica and the one I kept was the M5, its definitely my absolute favorite camera, im thinking of getting a second one as a back up
I’ve definitely thought about getting the silver M5 as a backup. Can’t have too many.
I honestly feel like if this camera was a bit thinner, and had a red dot, it would be the best designed Leica lol. The purists hated it, but everything is so well thought out, design wise lol.
A red dot version would be sick.
I have a few Leica film cameras, M5 is still the most practical & affordable one , I bought it to over 10 countries, never disappointed me,
I got to travel to Europe with mine for the first time during the summer and it was great. Glad yours has served you well!
Great to have you back! Looking forward to all the new and upcoming videos!
Yeah! Figured there was no time better than now to get back at making some videos. Definitely more to come!
Hope you're doing well!
Same to you dude!
I love my M5, it took me a while to find a strap that i liked. I landed on the domke gripper 1.5, works beautifully and is very comfy.
I'll have to check that strap out
Really good system, amazing photos, really good software!!! Thanks for the tutorial!!
@@maffotochannel thanks for watching! I’ve made some upgrades since this video was made, but it’s a great setup to get started with!
Nice photos shot . Love the M5 my favourite film camera . To me the M5 better than M6 and M7 .
hello Ethan o/ Cheers from Poland. I like m5. I own m4 but still m5 is good looking for me ;3
Nice! The M4 is a beautiful camera. Thanks for watching!
OMFG Why are you attacking me??
Nice video but photo heh not so cool. In my opinion you could at liest crop those.
nah
I absolutely love Black and White and looking at getting a Leica M5 . So so nervous about the purchase. I don’t shoot film that much. I am wanting to shoot it more . This is “bad” motivation for the G.A.S. Thanks for such a nice video. I like how you also critique you photos as I do .
The M5 is a really great choice. I don’t have much experience with other Leicas, but I’ve always been happy with it. It’s a very intuitive camera to use and gives great results. Thanks for watching!
What was the classic car at the beginning? an old Saab? cool af man! side note I'm from Liverpool UK and a street photographer but work for Cascade in the day job and our head office is in Portland, spooky this vid popped up 😂 great vid and cheers 🎉
Not sure what car it was, but it looked great! Funny how small the world is sometimes haha! Thanks for watching!
bro said budget
For anyone this video motivates to assemble a rig like this one, please note that a 50mm 1.4 lens designed for full frame 35mm photography is probably the worst choice you can make. Lenses like this one have to give up something in favor of that fast maximum aperture, and what they ditch is "curvature of field". That means that the center or edges of its image can be optimally sharp, but not both. In shooting the real world, that's not so important, as subjects in life tends to be at different distances from the camera anyway. In scanning this way, it is critical the lens focus its sharpest them the subject is a flat plane. That's why most of these videos recommend a true macro lens, which is optimized for that feature, but they are relatively expensive. A much less expensive alternative is a good enlarging lens, which also require a flat field to function. For this use, a lens of 75mm to 135mm with a 6-element design would be best. His rig here seems okay for images to be used in noncritical areas, like phones or computer monitors, but if he starts making prints of any size, he's screwed.
Thanks for the in-depth explanation. My setup has changed substantially since this video came out. The biggest change is exactly what you're talking about. My 50mm lens wasn't cutting it any more for what i needed so i've swapped it for a 90mm Tamron copy stand lens, and it has made a huge difference in my scanning. I'm by no means a professional and appreciate any feed back from anyone with more experience.
@@Ethanhansen_photowhich Tamron lens? EOS Mount?
@@Ethanhansen_photois it the EOS Mount Tamron lens? I'm trying to get a decent lens for a low cost.
@@undefined.value. the 90mm f2.5 Tamron copy lens has an interchangeable back. So there are multiple mounts you can get it in. I use the FD mount and adapt it to EF.
Stumbled on your vid yesterday while looking for Leica stuff and since I live in Gresham... How did you find your M-5?
I got mine through facebook marketplace. If you're in the Portland area, I know that Bluemoon camera has an M5 in stock right now. They're a good place to buy from. They also have other Leica camera bodies.
Thanks Ethan! I'm actually in Gresham - maybe I should check out Bluemoon Camera. I'm waiting on some books on the M's. While the 6 seems to be the one everyone wants they're stupid expensive and it's really about the glass - not so much the body.
@@garysmith7545 Totally. The lenses are super nice. If you’re not too worried about the body, the Leica CL (made in collaboration with Minolta) is a pretty cool Leica body that’s compact, but gives you that M mount. It’s very inexpensive compared to the M line of cameras. I haven’t gotten to use one personally, but it was on my radar for a while.
Thanks for the tip on Bluemoon, I didn't realize they even existed. After visiting their web site I'm going to have to take a trip there. I currently have a number of recent digital bodies as well as the 2 film cameras that I learned on: Canon FTb and Voigtlander CLR.@@Ethanhansen_photo
Looks like scanning error of my portra 400.
Dope!
It seems like you shoot a very large percentage of your shots vertically? have you thought about shooting a square format?
I have! I've been trying to find the right square format camera for the better part of a year. I go back and forth on if I want to get a TLR or something else that shoots 6x6.
4:48 and 7:12 were my favorites. Gorgeous Ethan!
Thank you!

@@Ethanhansen_photo Awesome 👍
WOAH! awesome to see another portland local enjoying the streets! portland is AMAZING for street photography.
I’ve lived here my whole life and this has been giving me a fresh perspective on Portland. Im still figuring out where the best spots to shoot are, but I love walking around the city so it’s a great excuse to explore.
I miss the era of film. It's crazy how beautiful the shots are in comparison to digital. The color balance of a SOC shot for most digital platforms is just so ugly.
Film definitely has a magic to it!
Making me want to get that film camera sooner so I can use it for my trips to Chicago and Yakima! 😆
love the relaxing nature of the video, would love to see some voiceover of you talking about why you took certain shots and why you like/don't like them. Keep it up!
When I do another one of these videos I’ll definitely do some more talking. Thanks for watching!
Great shots, and lovely find at 7:49. You're making me want to take a trip over to St. John's. Been a couple years since I've hung out over there!
It’s a great spot! There are some really great places to eat over there. Stormbreaker and Louis Pizza are two of my favorites!
feeling inspired by this!! will go out right now and take some pictures. 7:07 that shot is sooo gorgeous!!

i shoot most of my movies with a nikkor 28mm f2.8 ai-s mf on an m43 sensor, so like a 58mm equivalent. i dont think i'd like that distance as much full frame, but i like it a lot cropped. the best use i get out of it is to just treat it like whatever distance i want-use it for closeups, use it for two shots, use it for head to toe, use it for landscape, doesnt matter. the 28mm i use is so sharp all the way to the edges, and the lines are so straight, that it can be whatever i want it to be.
At some point I want to invest in a good 28mm lens. I also have a 58mm Helios lens that I’ve been meaning to use more. Too many to keep up with!
I am using my CONTAX G2 with all the G lens. I like using 16mm 21mm and 28mm. My favorite is 21mm for street photography. 35mm is still too tight for me. 21mm is good for some close-up and wide enough for things like narrow streets and back-street corners. I don't really like using anything narrower than 35mm. G45 is a bit too tight for me.
I've always wanted to try the Contax G2. It looks like a really fun camera. At some point I might go for a 21mm lens. Good luck with your photography!
@@Ethanhansen_photo It's full auto, meaning that you can do whatever composition and don't have to worry about exposure and stuff. I shot 36 rolls in a week. On average I can shoot around 5 rolls per day, at an interesting location. It's quite fun to use. But you know, electronic film cameras tend to have problems. And I would recommend trying 16mm and 21mm G lenses, they are challenging but they produce shockingly great images.
I’ve always loved the looks of the m5. It aesthetically reminds me of the movie Playtime. Great video and congrats on getting married, that’s so beautiful
Thank you!
bought a used camera last week spontaneously that came with a 60 mm lens, a detail i didn't even think about cause i barely knew there was a difference between lenses :/ holy frick everything is so close!!! that's how i found ur channel, searching for camera content to learn about my new camera :)
Congrats on the new camera! My first film camera had a 55mm lens and it took me a long time to get anything else. The fun and difficult part is that there are so many to choose from. Best of luck with it!
Nice glass! (I don't use that phrase loosley now 😅) I like the 50mm, I really think its neat because its perfect sitttin lens..meaning I enjoy using it whenever I'm sittin somewhere chillin especially diners etc. Its also fun to see some squeeze and tighter angles in a scene. I am addicted to using it vertically in portrait orientation though ha ha. I love shooting liminal night scenes, nature/forest too! I actually do a lot of shooting with a 50 on a tripod tbh..just feels fun to me, slows me down and treat the scene with my full attention, and thinking why I want to move closer.. further away etc instead of aimlessly pacing and overthinking it. Love the channel, would love to see bits of your films too! Cheers!❤ 🍻
Right on! I like your approach to using the 50mm as a lens to slow down with and be more methodical. My films are on the channel Doomed Productions. I have it linked on my channel page.
Wow! This is so exciting! Im glad people are noticing the channel now. ❤ I can't wait to see the movie.
I've been shooting instant for a couple years, and i think the mm equivalent of most the cameras I've used has been around 35mm or wider. Jumping into non-instant 35mm film for the first time, and using a 50mm kit lens; Its been a bit of a learning curve in terms of having a more narrow view with my shots. I've been thinking about getting a 28 or 35. Perhaps even one that's variable?
I use a zoom lens with my Canon and it's nice to have a wide range of focal lengths. The only problem is its a much longer lens so bringing it around is sometimes a pain. 28-35 I feel are the sweet spot for me most of the time.
For a while, all I wanted to shoot was 50mm, but now after shooting 35 and 40 so much I struggle with 50mm.
I feel ya
Found your videos after you started following me on Instagram, I loved your work. I always love the difference in what people shoot in Oregon vs what people shoot in Washington, being that they're so close together. Personally I love shooting more sad American landscapes for my personal work, but I've been experimenting with gear, style, and types of photography with my RUclips channel. I love learning and pushing myself when it comes to photography. As well, videography has open up a whole new can of worms as it comes to shooting style, editing, lighting, as well as learning audio. It's been a wild ride here on RUclips. Can't wait for the next episode!
Glad to hear from another PNW photographer! I've really been enjoying watching you try out different styles with your photography. Your redscale work has been really cool. Keep up the awesome work!
