One time, more than other times, I was having extra fun and the air speed, atmospheric pressure, a few planets, and my valves were just perfectly aligned.

Again, more Thad Jones, but more James Davis' solo too
Просмотров 59Год назад
James Davis is the butteriest. You know how Chet Baker sounded the same on trumpet and singing? Well, the sweetness you hear in James' sound here is well reflected in his personality. Swingy, easy, kind, inviting, inclusive, listening. The best!
The Chicken (with chips)

Chet Ferretti played a lot of chips. He swang good. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you don't know the inside of the history of swingin lead playing... probably.. I'm being presumptuous. And making excuses. I liked the high note though. Still do. It was very directional, so loud in the crowd and soft on the phone-cam. What do you think? Was it worth it?

Playing a Monette in Japan
Просмотров 137Год назад
This horn played pretty good. I never could really make Monette mouthpieces work, I liked a little more resistance than they usually support, but my beloved AR worked great on here. Shame, as a pro player, I was never able to justify spending THAT much on a working instrument. They do look and play really darn well.

Does Thad ever get old? No. Don't lie, you love it too. Sad I didn't have more of James in this old clip from 2019. He plays so good. Nick, beard. Drew Hansen, nice cameo at the end.

I went a little overboard, but hey, it's just fun. No one makes money playing this good good music, so why not enjoy! It's an "Orchestral Excerpt" of lead trumpet. What do you think?

You’ve got some nice power there Brother!!!
This kid sucks.
Only thing that will soothe my instant hair envy is the sweet music. How compassionate! 😉
And he swings!
Nice!
beautiful man
That's a half-step lower than the original key. -Cheating.
But don't you think the vocalist having the best chance of giving their best performance for an audience is more important than whatever the key situation is for a couple horn players? Besides, cheating in music whilst playing an acoustic instrument just isn't possible. Give it a shot, it's tough, friend.
@@snookydidit They probably transposed it down for the lead trumpet player rather than the vocalist. But either way, performing songs in any other key than the original is like watching Evel Knievel doing a jump with training wheels on his bike. The good musicians can play it in all keys. If the song in the original key is too much for them, they shouldn't perform it.
@@artvandelay8090 Wowzer, that's a very interesting argument. What if Sinatra himself had commissioned a re-arrangement in a lower key later in his career because the upper range was a little too much of a stretch, but the extra lower notes had become buttery and luxurious? Wouldn't changing the key in such a case be a skillful, elegant choice? Furthermore, this was the Chicago Jazz Orchestra, featuring a brilliant vocalist Paul Marinaro. The whole band were seasoned pros, myself and Connor Bernard there in the video were the youngest. Many members were alumni of the Buddy Rich Band, the Basie Band (THE BASIE BAND!), the Sinatra Jr. Band, and more. I'm pretty sure the drummer performed with Hank Jones and Ray Brown, hung on friendly terms with Art Blakey... None of those titans had any discursive thing to say about a key change--nor would any of us have any issue with playing it in any key. But none of that matters, the big boss, the guy with the checks wanted all the elements on this gig to land in this key. So we played it in that key. We dressed up nice for the gig, played our butts off and entertained a couple hundred people in a gorgeous theater, and took home a couple Benjamins. They who write the checks choose the key. Legitimacy lies in the adoration of the attended audience. All was well.
@@snookydidit Buttery my ass. If a singer gets old and loses his range, I don't care who it is, that's a bad thing, not a good thing. That's like saying if a guy gets old, doesn't shower as often, and starts smelling like rotten eggs, you'd be saying, "MMM, eggs, my favorite, I love eggs, especially when they're burnt a little." And if a trumpet player gets hired to play in a studio and can't play the notes in front of him, they don't get a new arrangement, they get a new trumpet player. Elegant, give me a break. I don't believe in singers changing a song and making it their own or transposing it down. That just demonstrates that they're limited and incapable. Find a different song to sing, don't bastardize the one you're attempting (unsuccessfully) to play.
@@artvandelay8090 wow my friend - it is pretty obvious you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. first - this guys top notes were solid, and it is obvious that playing it a half step higher would have been possible for him. secondly - it is VERY common to put the song in whatever key is best for the soloist, and therefore the band, as the pros that they are, work around that without complaints. it is just another day at work for the band doing what they do - play as written, take it down a minor third, whatever is necessary. and by the way, to ask the singer to sing in a key that is too high and jeopardize the performance because they are afraid someone might say Frank sang it is a certain key - well that is just amateur land.
Is there a way to listen to the full performance anywhere?
I wish too. :(
YOU'R TRYING TOO HARD PLAYBACK AND LISTEN TO YOURSELF DONT GIVE UP PRACTICE EVERYDAY MILES DAVIS PRACTICE 8 HOUER A DAY . GOOD LUCK .
It’s okay. I realized I spent 27 years trying too hard, so I quit trumpet entirely. I have so much free time, I can have a regular job, and I don’t have to hate myself every day. It’s great. Would love to check out some of you’r playing. Do you have videos?
YOUR OUT OF KEY C# TO HI. C ABOVE THE STAF THE SONG IS IN C . IN A OUT IF KEY LISEN TO YOUR SALF . YOUR TO HI .
Goodness, you're correct! Why didn't I notice this years ago. I guess it's a good thing no one got hurt :P Have you posted a video trying your hand at some cool transcriptions? Who are you checking out these days? Thanks for commenting, -J

Yea, you’re right, I’ll be darned. I’ve been wondering what was wrong for years. I had some cool gigs like this one, but I sucked so I gave it up. Haven’t played trumpet for a living in three years and I’m so much happier. Last band I was in, the legend, Roger Ingram was the guy the called after me. Pretty flattering replacement. You got a clip playing it live where I can hear some proper Snooky-esque swingin’? Love to check it out. You rockin’ a day gig too? At the time of this clip, it was hard to stay in the same kind of prime fitness I had down at North Texas. I was enjoying paying rent and playing only Jazz in Chicago because I had a day job as a kindergarten teacher. It was a golden time with challenges. Ha!

Thanks, friend :)
Hi, Did you stick with it? If so how did it pan out long term? Thanks
I have stuck with it. Longest I’ve played one mouthpiece in my life. I love it. I frequently use the whole gamut of cups, enjoying making a warm pretty sound that people like to hear. I use VS, E, D, and B cups. I can play the whole range on any of them, but with different characters to the sound.
What mouthpiece were you using before the AR resonance ?
Brian Nava Bob Reeves 42ES69. Played pretty well, but the tone was nasaly and closed off above A.
That line at the end killed me lmao "uhf, Maynard, ... MMM" 🤣
Jerry DiMuzio. He was my teacher when I was kid. Loved him...Great dude!!
didn't know Ed Sheeran plays trumpet

Nice A's!!! Oops!! that might get taken the wrong way! Nice high concert G's! LOL
EXCELLENT!!! Looking forward to working with you!!!
What model and size?
Colin Milch VS Lead 40.
Can I also ask If that’s the medium backbore? Thanks
Great!! Would you have the music partiture?
S Geno yea, its the recording. All the information is there, just listen and learn it note by note, beat by beat! It’s the best way to learn cause it stays with you forever and becomes part of how you phrase and sing through the horn.
BRAVO ! Excellent playing !
Did you learn this by ear, or did you find sheet music somewhere. I've been looking for a couple years now and still can't find anything for it.
I just learned it by ear. Transcribing like an improvisor would do to a favorite soloist, I like to study Maynard's nuances as a "singer" of trumpet.
Fantastic! I love your rendition -- one of my favorite jazz tunes of all time.
Savage. Lol
I love it! listening to you for 7th time...you nailed it down perfectly.Thank you
I'm playing a Stork LT10 and a Yamaha WB.
Met you at Lake Ellen in Glen Ellyn a couple years ago, you played in a band with Mark Roller. Sounds great bro. Maynard played sharp a times. Awesome control. Whew, wish I could play like that. What gear are you playing on? -John Gutierrez' RUclips: MrJohnnyG6 search Mustang Sally Thanks!
