Budget Friendly Makeover Before and After of Short Term Furnished Rental Cottage
Finally, after months of hard work and plumbing challenges, my petite, little beach cottage rental (all 450-square feet of it) is now ready for a full house tour, before and after reveal.
I wanted to use this opportunity to explain why I chose certain colors, furniture and decor that would maximize the budget and square footage. I wanted to find a way to strike a balance between creating a distinct design point of view while still attracting the widest amount of potential tenants.

Help! The last final steps in my petite beach cottage makeover are the hardest. I spent 5 days and three different paint strippers to remove the red shellac and varnish on the kitchen countertop/bar which also serves as the dining table. Small Home Office Desk Quick DIY Hack

FINAL New and Improved Shoe Storage Sliding Bins for Small Entryway

Since I live in a small space with an even smaller entryway, shoe storage is visible from all angles. CONFUSED About Best Neutral Paint Color for Small Low Light or Dark Room
So fun seeing the final transformation! Obsessed!!
You are the biggest cheerleader for all of us content creators out there! You’re just awesome!
What a beautiful place, l love how light and airy it is. 👍x
Hi Lena! This little cottage is blessed with the best natural light from morning until dusk. It informed the design for sure. Thank you for spending time with me at Nutshell Living. See you at the next episode!
Look forward to your videos! Never disappoint!!
Hi King! Thank you SO much for watching and sharing your uplifting words. Onto the next! Have a great week.
It all came together wonderfully. I’m so glad the tenant loves it. I know I do. The counter top goes very well with the color scheme. That accent color of beige was just the right amount to make the room cozy & inviting when stepping through the front door. Love the mirror by the door. Perfect. That lucite table is ingenious. It’s there but doesn’t seem to take up space because it’s clear. Now I wonder who I learned that from! LOL. The art work! That was the best surprise. I had no idea. You can bet I’ll be checking that out. The ones you chose added the finishing touch to this cottage make over. Have a fab week, my friend.
Hi my friend!! Thank you for watching! It means so much to me that you appreciate the little details. You’re right about warming up the living room with that little spot of beige. Between the kilim beige and the sage green in the bedroom, these colors were love at first swatch. I am always so impressed by your eye for details. You never miss anything. That little lucite table on wheels is so handy. It tucks under and over the sofa for the lowest profile when not in use, and it feels so nice to the touch. The tenant can also use a large tray I provided to corral a Chinese takeout order and use the ottoman as a table too. I ran out of time, but I know when this tenant moves out in 3-4 months, I have time to tweak a few details. Have a great week. I felt like I was the last to know that so many of our favorite paintings are available for free downloads. You can also sell the art without penalty. I didn’t realize the cloud painting print on canvas I used in the last cottage makeover was a public domain image by Whistler. I realize now I was overcharged! One thing I learned is that these museums make the search of images very clunky and a bit frustrating on purpose. I had to play around with different filters and key words to find what I wanted, but it’s so worth it.
Everything looks great! When can I move in? haha
Hi!! Give me a heads up and let’s see what we can do! Glad you like the place. Thanks for much for watching. Means a great deal for us solo content creators.
Love this place, really luxurious. I wrote down the Sherwin Williams Kilim Beige, I’m into the same group of colors. Plus the vintage surfer wallpaper. I was born and raised in LA/Orange County and relate to the surf culture.
Hi Pamela! Definitely get a little sample of the Kilim Beige. I bought 6 samples of beige before I fell in love with this shade--not too gray or too pink based. Make sure and test it around the room to see how it looks in different light. Remember the “wallpaper” is essentially a printed polyester sheet! A good renter friendly project. Glad it brought back memories of your days near the beach. Have a great week, and thanks so much for checking out the channel.
This cottage is so unique and chic. Every detail is expertly crafted. J’adore.
Hi ProducerJoe! Thank you for your kind words. I can just see you shaking up a batch of martinis with blue cheese stuffed olives at the newly painted “bar.” Thank you for all of your support! Xoxo!
@@NutshellLiving That sounds incredible right now. Maybe in between tenants, we'll have to do just that.
This is so wonderful! The choice of fabric for decoupage is unusual but very fitting. Your idea re: the plates & miniature salt & pepper vintage shakers is a real winner! How fun it is! Thank you for sharing your marvelous creativity!!!
Hi Shirley. Those vintage S&P shakers from my mother’s collection are so precious. I wanted a way to show them off. They make me smile every time I walk by the pantry. Have a great week. See you for the next episode! Working on it right now.
What a very sweet home, full of charm. So nicely done!
Hi Barbara! I rented this place before it was even finished and didn’t advertise. The tenant was interested in the back cottage but there were too many applicants. I showed her this cottage under construction, a good 3 weeks from completion, and she snapped it up! Hope to see you for the next DIY adventure.
Fanastic! A little time, know how, asking for help, and creativity and you have yourself a short term rental!!! Love this little gem!!
Hi! I love that you called this petite cottage a little gem. That is how I feel about this place. Doing so much of the work myself makes me feel extra connected to the space. Thank you checking out the channel and for leaving such kind and encouraging notes. Gives me a pep in my step! Have a super week.
Love your idea. I’m going to do this for my medical cabinet . Thank you so much
So glad it inspired you, thanks for watching!
So lovely and serene! Love the soft colours ❤
Hi Tanya! Serene was what I was going for! Look out for today’s episode. I’m giving a full tour of this petite beach cottage. The tenant has already moved in, and she’s thrilled. She’s a hard-working pediatric nurse so I am so happy she has a place she can retreat to. Have a super week.
you are a lovely person with nice ideas and i will recommend your channel
@@JETSETJP such a nice comment to start my day! Thank you for visiting my channel.
That was so much fun to watch😊. AND the TV stand is fabulous. I would love that in my home.❤
Thank you so much for watching. I was thinking of I find an other trunk, I’ll make another one for my guest room. It’s not only unique, it is a great storage solution. Working on editing the final full cottage makeover tour for this week’s episode. Hope to see you then.
Tbh, I thought there was no hope for that table top BUT you believed in it and now it's absolutely stunning!! then you created a unique and chic TV stand. Your tenants are the luckiest folks!! I can't wait until I see these in person soon!! xx
Thanks so much, Joe. The tenant is moving in as we speak. She wrote me the nicest text. She is over the moon with all of the thoughtful, cozy decor details. Onto the next!
You weren’t kidding about the counter top! Oh my goodness! And so little time for a solution. The finish is perfect. I’ve been curious about trying this technique. After seeing this, I’m not so intimidated by it. As soon as you rounded that gorgeous succulent planter, my eye caught the brass shell as you were explaining that it is a door knocker. I wish you could have seen my delight. I was grinning from ear to ear! Soooo much better than the old door bell. I love it. The trunk! It’s the quirky piece the cottage needed in that space. Functional, fun, and unexpected…well done my friend. I totally relate about no distractions when creative juices are flowing. I’d make a horrible creative content provider…I even forget to eat when I’m in that creative zone! LOL I caught sight of a gorgeous throw on the sofa. You have thought of every detail to make this a home away from home. This cottage is so beautiful & welcoming. I know your tenant will feel comfortable in this cozy & inviting environment- indoors & out. Have a beautiful week, can’t wait to see the full reveal.
@@lindawynell oh, Linda! You and I are so in sync! I have the same brass door knocker on the back cottage, and I’ll be adding one more so that all the rentals have them on the property. The faux Pottery Barn wood paint technique is so easy and foolproof. Definitely give it a whirl. It makes the entire room feel light and bright. I provided lots of cute coasters and rattan placemats to protect the surface. The trunk was the right size and brown color (most of them were too large) and had the great brass details that the others didn’t. The stencil I bought was done so well that I knew this project could work. I feel like I want to make a smaller one for my guest room. Thank you for watching every week and for being excited for me. The tenant checks in at noon. Still need to print out the artwork to frame. Have a great week.
The counter turned out great. Everything’s really coming together, looks fabulous.
@@errata9968 so nice of you to say. It’s hard when the budget is slim, and it’s for a furnished rental that needs to attract a larger audience. Decorating for myself is a lot easier. Hope to see you for the full transformation.
That wood counter is AWESOME!! The trunk, oh my goodness! Your work speaks for itself.
@@fromhumblebeginnings7798 thank you SO much. I have to admit I was so nervous putting on that dark glaze, but as soon as I started brushing in the texture, I felt calm. It looked prettier with each stroke. The trunk makes me smile. Thank you for watching! Next week, the full beach cottage makeover tour. Have a super week.
The planter is such a good idea, and it looks so pretty hanging.😊
Hi Purple! It’s been 2 weeks and the kalanchoe have really opened their blooms. It’s been so dry here is SoCal, but I’ve been careful not to overwater these succulents. Kind of goes against instinct, but I have to let them dry out a bit. Have a super week. Going to post a fun update on the cottage makeover. Can’t wait to share!
Oh that wall is good now. I love the bee.
The bee is the best! To meet the makeover budget of a furnished rental, I have to find ways to embellish what I already own. Thank you for watching.
It’s beautiful. You really are made for this kind of creative decor.😊
It’s coming along. Hit a snag with the wood counter. It took many tries to remove the paint and layers of orange and red stain. The wood underneath was not much better looking. Made a pivot. Hopefully will share my solution this week. Hope to “see” you at the next episode. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for telling us about the challenges with paint sprayer. Do you think it was a too good to be true invention? Those flowers look great. I’ve lived int he NE for so long now that the ivy looked fake to me during this season. The color is gorgeous and combining it with the other plans. Tres Chic. What a great idea to refresh the porch. Cozy, calming and chic . The same energy your property gives.
Hi ProducerJoe! That’s my design mantra-the Three C’s: cozy, calm, chic! I am so disappointed with the sprayer. I checked out people giving it a favorable review online. I poured the paint through a strainer and thinned it with water as suggested and each time the paint dripped from the top. Thumbs down. By the time I bought three of these canisters, I could have put that money towards a real spray, which is the next purchase. See you at the next episode!
Helpful to see this. Thanks for your honest assessment and product recommendation . It looks good to me!
Hi Barbara! So glad the info helped. The peel and stick is still looking good and secure. Have a great week.
Well done!
Thanks, Barbara! Plants really do make a porch! Have a very Happy New Year. 🎊
Adorable!!!
Thank you, my friend! Happy 2025 to you and your beautiful family.
Very nice.
Thank you. Plants are the ultimate accessory, right! I hope they’ll all thrive in their new spot. Happy 2025! See you at the next episode.
yes and a Happy New Year to you too.
Whimsical…that’s a perfect description for the ivy. I don’t believe I have seen an angel wing succulent. They are amazing. I also love how the vertical succulent plantings have settled in & are thriving on the privacy divider. You do have a gift caring for succulents. The climate is perfect for them where you are. The porch looks great. It really is welcoming and adds to the overall beauty of the courtyard area. I don’t know how your tenants can leave. 😊 wallpaper & the painting of cabinets are finished in my kitchen. I’m still looking for a budget friendly solution to the counter tops. Can you believe it is almost 2025?! I pray it is a blessed year for you & those you love. Thank you for being here. You & your channel have become my place of comfort & inspiration.
Oh, Linda! If you only knew how much your words literally lift me up! I feel a little more at ease that a tenant is already set to move in, but all of the remaining to-dos seem like they are taking forever to check off. The last tenant removed some of the solid wood closet shelving and threw them away. So I have to cut the wood to match. I am not very good at that, but there is no budget to hire anyone at this point. Anyway, I am beyond impressed that you have wallpapered and painted your kitchen cabinets. You must be finding excuses to spend all of your time in that space. Here’s to 2025. Wishing you and your loved ones health, happiness and making new friends on this channel!
Those are stunning honey!
Thank you! Happy New Year to you. Hope to see you for the next ep!
LOVE the salt and pepper shaker on the plates !What a great idea. !
@@Ggrma45 Hi! Aren’t they fun? I can’t help but smile and think of my mother when I see that plate collection. Thank you so much for sharing your kind words and watching. Hope to see you for the next episode. Have a Happy New Year!

Thank you, Lulubelle! I’m going to keep on creating and sharing as long as there are viewers like you out there who are enjoying the content. Happy holidays to you and your family!
Lovely! 😍 What a great idea! Now to hunt for liquid starch in Cape Town 😅❤
Awww, you are so welcome. That mirror is perfect and that natural light…also just perfect. I could see myself doing some color pencil drawings in that nook. I love this room! I think the complimentary ( not matchy ) nightstands makes the room more casual & relaxing. I need a get away…can I rent the cottage?! LOL That paint color is beautiful. I totally love the tones of pink & green. The room is inviting, beckoning one to enter & relax. I caught a peek at a live moss wall art piece outside the bedroom? You knocked this one out of the park. ❤ Personal note: my son is home from his 4th & last surgery. Colostomy successfully removed & his body is functioning normally again. My grandson & I made pudding pops…a blast from my childhood. It was a good weekend of cooking & crafts while his parents were at the hospital. This coming weekend…the other 1/2 of the kitchen.
Let’s start with the most important news about your son!! What a long road of recovery, but he was able to lean on you and the family. You are definitely the fun grandma, and pudding pops must have seemed like making magic to your little munchkin. I hope you are sleeping easier now that your son has had the last in a long line of surgical procedures. I can’t believe you have enough energy to tackle the kitchen reno part deux! You must be loving the direction it’s going in. I knew you’d catch a glimpse of the moss frame! I’m going to start hiding little “Easter eggs” for you and only you to discover. I’m go glad you like the bedroom. I wanted a little cozy hideaway space for the tenants to retreat to. Even though the cottage is only 3/4 finished, I rented the place today to a wonderful travel nurse. I didn’t even advertise the place yet. She had applied for another unit that had too many applicants (the back cottage with private garden rents quickly). This cottage will be ready when she moves in early Jan. That gives me plenty of time to make everything perfect. I won’t wish you a wonderful week as I always do since I already know it will be…with your son tucked in at home. See you at the next episode. XOXO
Lovely!! I just love it - favorite is the closet doors but the whole thing - chef's kiss!!
The closet doors are such a fun and inexpensive project, and I love that it is non-committal. Just peel off and start again with something new. Thank you so very much for watching. Next week is going to be fun when I make a one-of-kind TV stand. Have a great week. Hope to see you then.
Tranquil definitely describes this bedroom. I could see a book being written in this room. The colour is 'chef's kiss' I'm a big fan of green walls - I had that in my Chicago place. We already know I'm obsessed with the closet door. Bravo!
@@ProducerJoe you’ll have to see it in person when you visit. Thank you for all of your support and encouraging words.
@@NutshellLiving I can't wait for our collab!! Definitely when I come to visit!!
I love this DIY project. I have an oval mirror that has a chocolate velvet ribbon on it. If I could dye the clay a bronze color would be perfect for my space in the guest bedroom.
Great idea. You can paint air clay any color to match. I love a chocolate velvet ribbon always.
“🤔” hello, my Friend! Never will I flatter you with words. The side wall decorations appear to be out of place. You are the queen of small spaces, which is why you should redo that side wall or perhaps not.
@@Fanouvvi hi there! Do you mean the closet doors or the peg coat rack? Thank you for your style notes. Sorry things seem out of balance for you in this space. Thank you for watching and caring as much as you do to comment. Have a great week my friend!
I love it, especially the wallpaper on the closet doors. ❤ The choice of sage green on the walls and in the sconces is very soothing.
@@joyful8072 soothing is the exact word I would use. The camera doesn’t really pick up the beauty of this paint hue. Thank you for much for watching.
I could move right in! So charming!
@@rachelmoriartyinteriors7860 thanks, Rachel. Once I get a renter in, I’ll be able to embellish a bit more next round. Thank you for watching!!!
This fantastic! Is removal just a wipe down job after the fabric comes off? Did you put a coat of the starch down before the fabric or just atop? Thank you!
@@chicky6three Hi Chicky! Such a good diy trick, right? Wipe down is with a moist cloth. Only need water. Peels off easily. No paint will pull up. I put the starch on the door, placed fabric on top and then “painted” on more starch until completely saturated. Let dry and then paint another layer, smoothing out any bumps. The trick is to use fabric that is not too thick and not too thin. Nothing heavier than a bed sheet. Good luck!
@@NutshellLiving Thank you for taking the time to get back to me! This is exactly the info I needed. Can't wait to try this.
Duvet snaps are pure genius! You just gave me the inspiration to make a slip cover for my daybed - love your channel!

Starch?? What a super cool idea!! Can't wait to see the rest of your space!
Hi! It’s an old fashioned design trick that still literally “holds up.” Working hard on the bedroom. Hope to reveal it on Sunday. Hope to see you then. ❤
WOW!!!! THIS LOOKS SOOOOOO CHIC (and yes, I'm yelling!!) I remember you doing this before but I didn't of putting on a door. I know EXACTLY where I'm going to do this. Now I just have to find the right fabric. Maybe something of a Ranch Packet (tee hee) - Jokes (it's a bit insider but I couldn't help myself.)
This makes me SO HAPPY (yelling too). It’s so easy and the results look like wallpaper. Let me know if you decide to do this in your fabulous NYC pad. We can DIY via FaceTime.
@@NutshellLiving I love that idea! Maybe we could do a RUclips collab!! At least a short.
@@ProducerJoe you had me at “collab”. We could discuss midterm rentals so it can relate to your content?
@@NutshellLiving ❤ I was thinking me using this technique and applying it to renters! Yes, we should also talk about your short term rentals too!!!
Love it! The closet looks like a window with a view into the past! I agree…how fun is that? Thanks for tip on the blade changes. I’m going to try that when I finish the other half of my kitchen in a couple weeks. My son has his last surgery this Thursday & I’ll have my 7 yr old grandson while he is in the hospital. I spent this weekend decorating my house for Christmas. Including a 7.5 ft tree because he thinks the house is “naked” without the tree. 😆I hope you have a truly blessed week.
Thanks, Linda. I’m happy to add a little whimsy into a space. I can’t believe your son has to have another surgery, but thank goodness it is the last one. I love picturing you with your grandson decorating that tall Christmas tree. Thank you for taking the time to watch. Have a wonderful week.
What a fun idea, turned out great.
Thanks so much. So many of my tenants are from out of town. I think they’ll get a kick out of the surf theme. Thank you for watching! Hope to see you for the next episode.
Should i apply a second layer of varnish to take care of the design?
@@relpixty Hi. Yes, a second coat of a clear acrylic sealer would be ideal. I like Minwax’s Polycrylic because it doesn’t yellow like varnish tends to do. I didn’t know this and ruined a decoupage chest of drawers that took weeks to finish. It definitely yellowed on me. Best of luck!
