    It's interesting to read the comments, I wonder if this is a British thing? No one seems to have any issue with the school setting the situation up like this. Kids who are lower income for any reason shouldn't be left out of school functions, why doesn't the school raise funds to send everyone witout cost or at least have some funding available to pay for those who can't afford to go?

That day instead of sitting at school while my classmates were at 6Flags my dad took me to the mall. (We went three times my whole childhood). The day was about me, and having fun. We spent some money on stuff I wanted, ate out, got ice cream. It wasnt 6flags with my class but they did their best.

    All of the suggestions are great, but I don’t see any suggesting that she ask the dad, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc to help her out with this…and let son know it’s going towards a birthday / Christmas gift. Money was super tight for us, too, when our girl was in private school, and the whole family chipped in when we needed them to. And a lot of times, those trips were in lieu of birthday presents.

  • @tideoftime
    @tideoftime 26 дней назад

    If she's just four months from becoming debt free, would 400 plus spending money (100? -- not sure how long the trip is), which she says would add just 2 months onto her debt time (for a total of 6) actually be that bad, in context? (She could stress to him that if she pays for this trip then that means there won't be any money for "x" extra things in the autumn/whenever, so he needs to make sure how much he wants the summer trip.) I don't see where adding two more months is *that* much of a deal breaker -- she'd still be paid off by the end of the year and debt free.

    One option is to take a cheaper trip yourselves. When I was in 8th grade there was a field trip to the capital that would have been 2 days of traveling, 4 days there, and 2 days traveling back. The fee was about $300 per person (this did include bus fare and cold sandwich meals). I was really sad that I couldn't go at first because it was too expensive but my parents had been saving for years to take a family vacation, I was able to stay in the capital city longer than my classmates did and do much more interesting things. My family is large, but for this family which is only 2 people you can likely get cheaper transportation and boarding than what the school provides and find tourism that's low cost or free. Take a £200-£300 trip for both of you where your son can choose the activities instead of paying at least £400 for him to be stuck in a bus and hotel room with classmates (teachers will probably split up friend groups intentionally) and pushed through a bunch of "educational" activities that will bore him. Also some schools have payment plans or charity funds for families who can't afford trips (like another family can pay £450 if they're able so the extra £50 is discounted for another child)

    • @danielevantassel4485
      @danielevantassel4485 26 дней назад

    Its not an hard choice. Shes over complicating it. Good debt managment does not mean debt free. Debt free sounds nice but shes confusing having debt with being broke. Every financially successful person carries debt almost constantly and leverage it to create wealth. Pay for your sons trip and manage your debt. Debt free journey is a joke.

    I think you need to have a talk with your son. See if you two can find a way for him to earn the 400 pounds. If he puts in an honest effort and comes up short. Ok, dip into your emergency fund. But if he didn't put in any effort, then don't. Make it his decision if he goes or not. Who knows, maybe he'll find what he really loves to do for work in the process and surprise you. And if he doesn't that's ok too (as long as he really tries).

      We have no clue how young this child is. If they’re a teen of a single parent they likely are WELL aware of financial issues within the home and likely have a part time job already to have spending money or a car or whatever. If he’s young enough he came home asking for four hundred pounds without a thought I assume he’s far too young to work for money. He’s likely too young to babysit. I’m not sure many people would trust a very young kid to walk/take care of their animals. I’m not really sure what he could do to earn money if he’s under 12 years of age. I’m not sure I’d be feel comfortable letting my 12 and below kid go to someone’s house unsupervised (for their safety as there are predators everywhere) to do something like clean or care for someone elderly. The single mother having to supervise her kid working would likely lose out on any free time she had and it would be wasting time she could possibly be working another job that could more realistically earn the money.

    The only reason I can see there might be a neccessary difference in the treatment between the elders and younger child is that the larger age gap means they are inhabiting completely different economic realities at the same ages. The younger brother's expenses would be a lot higher percentage of income and he would actually need more financial help these days.
