Clifftop 2024 Highlight Reel

Just back from Clifftop. Like most of us that attend, this festival has become the highlight of the year.
Yep. I came back with way more footage that I can use in one show. So here’s the first reel. When time allows, pour yourself a refreshing drink, open this video full screen, turn it up and enjoy the memories of time well-spent among friends and loved ones.

Clifftop 2023 - Jason Cade & Howard Rains - Saline County

This little gem of a jam was inadvertently left out of the Clifftop 2023 Highlight Reel. It's Jason Cade, Howard Rains and some other (most excellent!) players doing a fine number on Saline County... a tune Jason recalls being taught him by the late Art Rosenbaum. Rather than make up a Second Reel, here 'tiz. I may add a few more one-offs to the web this way. Enjoy! Craig

I was feeling melancholy about Clifftop being cancelled for 2020. So I decided to watch some footage from last year's highlight reels to cheer me up. My Sony PXWX70s are not doing me any audio favors. I record loud, often screechy music from fiddles, banjo and hammer dulcimers played by my subjects (wired with Sennheiser ew100s). More often than not, the frequencies appear to "shock" my camera's audio to where it produces the "warbly/digital soup" you hear in these 4 samples (of music and voice). Anyone know the name of the tune--or anything about the tune or the players--from 11:55 - 14:27? Love that tune, and the playing is so very fine.
I can get you part-way there. The band is called the Onlies. You might have to start listening to their recordings. Pretty sure you’ll find it there.

I did not see anyone getting around on any mobility scooters, are the allowed???
I also did not see any this year. Yes, they are allowed. There is a banjo player in a wheelchair that frequently attends but he didn’t come this year.

A neighbor asked if I was going to be home all week so that I could watch for packages on her porch. I went to RUclips looking for a Clifftop video that I could share with her to explain why I just might not be here. Snagged this one, and the first person interviewed in line is someone I jam with on Friday nights in Floyd va, and the second person in line has been my teacher for classes at the Augusta workshops a couple of times...... and when I finished the note to my neighbor I looked up at the video still playing in the background, and the mandolin player in one particular Jam was another one of my teachers from yet another music camp. I should get to clifftop more often.

I attended a bagpipes convention in Scotland some years ago. I swear those bagpipes were still ringing in my ears a week later. It must be the same for the good folks at Clifftop. I envy them 😊

Just takes off and doesn’t allow others to fine tune. I’ve seen a-lot of theses amateurs in jams.
Does Clifftop have a main stage with bigger/well known musicians, or is it a get together for small jam sessions or both? Either way it looks like a great time.
Yes, there is a main stage. Although they might not be known on a national/global basis, many of us turn out to support those community members that are advancing/promoting the art form of Old-time music. Small sessions are core to how it works.
