Good job, glad you guys were there to help them out. This dam is one of the scariest ones that I have see as far as the boil line being out so far. It's even worse in flooding conditions.

Thats very dangerous especially in deep waters. I saw natural dam u can see the waves about half meter they dont move but the current was very fast. Waves ddnot move i was afraid only watching that

Low Head Dam AKA Death Machine

Wow. 10 years ago now. I was here. I was off the side with the end of the rope holding on. I remember we were all so wasted from drinking on the river all day and stumbled upon this after we got off on the canoe ramp. This was the Bobby's Sandbar Float and it went from Sioux Rapids to Linn Grove. These kids were basically just on floaties going down the river. I still remember my buddy Shane and Troy jumping straight into action and not being scared at all. They are two of the guys on that cement pad right on the river helping. So glad no one died that day because this dam was famous for catching people underneath and never seeing them again except days later, miles down the river.
What a cluster-fuck. Six guys couldn't figure out the obvious: there needs to be one throw-man on the wall and one pull-man near shore level and on the near side of the wall. Rescue took six minutes when it should have only taken three.
Been thinking about low head, hydraulic jump problem. Build at an angle to create a flush. Down stream v dam would flush. Put an injection pipe behind the dam to create a mid depth flow that destabilised the recirculating pocket. Recreating the laminar flow seems to be the key. Instead of a vertical backface a sloping face would push from the bottom of the water column reducing recirculating pocket and aeration. Seeing the tree,a rope with floats spanning the width could help but it would cause trouble if people are allowed to run it. These are man-made death traps and we should be able to reengineer them to be safe and maybe fun.

I remember fishing here when I was a child, it was beautiful when the water wasn’t acting up. My dad would always keep a strict eye on me when we went fishing. I went there today and it’s so dry.

i've always wondered if you sink to the bottom if available and swam under and past the boil or whatever it is might work. not going to test it out though.

No the boil point is way to far to get past, and the water they are in is too aerated for ANY POSSIBILITY OF SWIMMING. I think that is what people do not realize about frothy water. It CANNOT hold your body weight up like normal water can. The overhead pressure of the running water just holds you down.
Runnin' those falls with a tree ? They shoulda' used whitewater kayaks, woulda' had a better chance at boofin' it...
I have never seen such a long backflow. WOW. Usually it’s a few feet at most but this has to be over 30 feet. This makes it physically impossible for kayakers to cross. That needs to be altered.
It's the engineer's fault for designing a submerged hydraulic jump. It like they wanted people to drown. Maybe it was a natural formation. Either way, good job rescuers.

You get caught in one of these things a life jacket is worthless. These three were lucky to be on the trees that they were which were long enough and heavy enough with enough odd shape to prevent them from being pulled under. Boats get destroyed in low head dams, so no, a life jacket would do nothing. These things are near perfect killers.
The one story I’ve heard of a guy escaping one of these, it’s because he deliberately took his life jacket off. With the flotation of the jacket, he was just being brought up to the surface and dunked over and over. Removing the life jacket allowed him to stay at the bottom and basically crawl his way out. It must have been a much smaller jump than the one shown here though; the backflow is massive.
Life jackets would not help here. Look up some videos on hydrolic jumps and it will teach a lot.
If I'm not correct, a life jacket can actually make things worse in certain situations, as it might prevent you from reaching the bottom where a current can carry you past the boil or at least is weak enough for you to swim past. Debris is what fucks you there though.

They are young adults maybe kids so please stop acting like you've Never done something then afterwards you realize it was very immature and not something you would ever do again. And as far as them thanking the brave men who helped them, if they didn't or just one person may have forgot but when you get out of a life or death situation thats left you in complete and utter shock , I personally wouldn't be mad. You don't save someone to hear them say " thank you" you save them knowing they have another day and get to go home to their family and friends. But anyways at the end of the day I'm so glad that these guys were found and no one died. But these dams are so dangerous they should do something about them. 😟😠✌
Put up signs about the dangers but then fast moving water is a tell-tale sign as well but schools don't teach the proper things they are regulated by the government and teach them cancel culture look at the world we live in now with covic. Loosing our freedoms and rights..

Looking at the length of that backflow I'm not even sure you'd be able to swim down and along the riverbed to escape it, its just so long.
Yeah... It would be your one chance. And it's not a fucking good one. Not to mention all the large debris knocking around in the recirculating current. No up from down. Bad odds.
Yes it’s incredible how far out the boil is. You can’t even see it because it’s too far out of the frame. If it wasn’t for that tree I think your only hope would be to try make it to the side.
Yes the water on the riverbed is going down stream fast you are certainly going to get banged up on the rocks but that is the only way out of this the surface water is moving backwards to fast
@@adairdouglass4391 Generally yes but bodies have a lot of drag and the likelihood you could swim or crawl the length required in this particular dam is even more unlikely than usual.
The length of water behind the weir that is flowing back to the weir is terrifying. I wonder if they could have designed anything any more dangerous if they had tried?! Its like there is a good twenty meters of guaranteed death by drowning.
The design of lowhead dams is complex. The "hydraulic jump" seen here is inevitable. It can be mitigated with retro-redesign, but usually at great cost. Meanwhile there should be signage to indicate to paddlers and swimmers that this is off limits, no exceptions, plus some form of buoys suspended across the river to mark the danger. Unfortunately there is no way to make this completely safe from people who disregard the danger.
@Dan Trebune Yeah, it's pretty treacherous. But I've heard of folks drowning in lowhead dams much smaller than 8 feet. Happened right by my house 3 years ago - that one is 2 feet, at the most.
Why not just put a chain link fence 10 or so feet above that you couldn’t get by without climbing it, and cover the portion sticking above the water with signage that says something like: “doesn’t matter if you’re Michael Phelps or a toddler, swim or boat past this and you’re dead.”
@@kappy123 Fence would not stand a chance are you serious? Did you see how big that tree was? It would just collect debris until it either was swept away or the river backed up and went around the fence.

They would be dead without the tree trunk in the river if we're being completely honest. Very lucky. Still a great rescue though.

What is going on is a perfect example or a dangerous hydraulic jump. The fast water from the top of the dam is being injected at high speed under the downstream water and taking and sucking with it a lot of air bubbles . The frothy water near the dam is less dense and it is circulating and not being translated. Good job they stayed on that tree as if they swam in it for long their floatation would not be as much as swimming in solid water. Also that rope was not only used to pull them in laterally but also to assist them in floating in aeriated water. Congratulations to the helpers and the victims should know better in the future and go and learn some fluid dynamics as it could save their life.
