США
Добавлен 8 дек 2020
Welcome to the official educational & entertainment channel for the USS KIDD Veterans Museum, located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA.
Built in 1942-43, USS KIDD (DD-661) is a Fletcher-class destroyer that served the U.S. Navy during World War II, the Korean War, and the Cold War before retiring in 1964. Today, she is the centerpiece of a museum that teaches about the service and sacrifices of our state's veterans. A multi-curricular educator, KIDD will teach you about history, geography, physics, chemistry, art, music, sociology, linguistics, writing, math, and more! She also moonlights now and again as an "actress" in television, film, and video games.
The USS KIDD Veterans Museum is a 501 c3 non-profit organization and receives no regularly-budgeted state or federal funding.

KIDD's Left the Cradle: Up-Close Shipboard POV
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.21 день назад
On April 25, 2024, Fletcher-class destroyer and museum ship USS KIDD (DD-661) left her unique cradle mooring system for the first time since December 1982. River levels on the Mississippi River were just high enough to allow one to two feet of clearance between her 3/8-inch thick steel hull and sonar dome and the concrete cradle below her. If KIDD didn't exit the cradle on this date, she would ...

On Tuesday, May 30th, the USS KIDD passed through New Orleans making 10 knots. Four members of the museum staff - Frank Hyler, Olivia Laborde, Orrin Bordelon, and Molly Bahlinger - chased the ship to three spots along the Mississippi River. They called it a night only when they reached the end of the road.

A nice bit of fun , I'm sure Ryan will be laughing . seriously I wish we in the UK. had been able to preserve a few more 20th C ships . Its remarkable that there are so many in the US. and a tribute to all the people who have spent their time and contributed to achieve that . Good luck to USS Kidd .
Kinda pity you fellas over there, you only have Caroline and Belfast, and Caroline's not exactly her old self...
So funny! But seriously, you guys are just jealous that you don't have 16 inch guns to play with on your museum ship 😛🤣
Nah.... Bigger guns = Bigger hull = More to maintain. We're just having fun with our peeps. 🙂 Besides, the big guns ALWAYS need the small boys to protect them. 😉😏👀🇺🇲🏴☠️
old ships like this always look so cool at night/dawn when the light is low and they're lit up.
This was really good fun. Good on you guys for going with it!
Great video! Everybody loves Ryan 😊😊😊😊😊
RAY-mond. Everybody loves RAY-mond. 😉
Hope he responds to this. Other ships should do more vids like his to create interest. Think it is time for a new build BB though soon but replace the big guns with a mix of railguns and missile loads, go nuclear drive and add a to the aft both a limited flight ops deck for about 4 VSTOL or Helicopter craft and a well deck (a smaller version of the landing assault ships for special ops) Could escort the carriers or break off for detached independent ops. With rail guns that have been tested so far a 5 to 15 lbs. slugs could match the power of the old 16inch guns with less weight and no powder. The top turret house could hold the whole thing including the mags. The aft guns could even be on the top of a hanger for the 4 aircraft. The Idea of the missile battleship was rejected as the missiles were too expensive for a full load and slow to replace at need. What I suggest would be about equal to two missile frigates in missiles in a muti-role ship able to take over or augment nearly any other ship's job in the fleet at need, short of a carrier or sub.
Hi I'm Ryan szimanski 😂 now what everyone needs to learn is Ryan's outro battleship new jersey receives opperating fund from new jersey state etc that's a tounge twister great gag though 👍
Yeah, we'll leave that one be since Louisiana was nice enough to contribute to our own drydocking. 😉
Will the real Ryan Szimanski please stand up?
"I'M SPARTACUS...er, I mean Ryan Szimanski!"
😄😂🤣
Will the real Ryan Szimanski please stand up... ("To Tell The Truth" 1960's/70's)

Love it!
You should do one spoofing "Look Who's Talking," starring Theo!
"...like this one of battleship NEW JERSEY" 🤣 Seems it shrunk a little bit.🤭
The water was COLD!!! 😄😆😂🤣
This is the sad story of what happens to dedicated ship people when you take their ship away from them.
😄😆😂🤣 Withdrawal? Detoxing?
This was genuinely funny. Wish he had popped in for real at the very end though. Drach hasn't been by to see you guys yet, has he?
Drach visited back in February.
Wheres' Mr. Ryan Szimanski? I saw his name in the title and there wasn't even a slight mention of him! XD
😄😆😂🤣
Love the hard hat, so appropriate for the drydock videos.
Safety first!
Need the strap on light though.
The real Ryan Szimanski has at least 8" of belt hanging past the buckle... Well done!
Lol. Costuming department was saving the budget for the belt for the forthcoming "Movie of the Week."
But where's the end of the video spiel about where the funding comes from?
You don't give the store away all in one sitting.... Keep 'em coming back for more. 😉
I'm Ryan, and so is my wife.
😆😂🤣
This is gold!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
@@usskiddveteransmuseum7568 you’re welcome! I take a sneak look at the Kidd at Thomasea every chance I get. Big fan of both channels!

You are forgetting the all important "Museum and Memorial" part! But seriously, nearly fell out of my chair laughing at this. Great job!
You saw how much trouble some of them had just remembering their cues, right? 😆😂🤣
Ahhhh, that was fantastic! Loved watching that short! Please do MORE!!!😎😁

Well done Kid(d)s
I absolutely LOVE the way it reminds me of those late 90's/early 2000's comedy shows 😂
10:25 is where the description of shot #3 begins (which is when the accident and hand injury occurs). You’re welcome.
So looking forward to seeing this space brought back to 1945 configuration! Great work Tim, Molly, Parks and all the shipyard crew!
Tim's visit to you guys and CASSIN YOUNG really helped a lot in visualizing the final product on the upper and lower levels. The middle level will be the jewel of the project, though. 😃
Slowly, gently, move her away from her cradle, she's fragile now, old and sleeping, don't wake her up. She dreams, you know, dreams of young men, true and strong, young men who rode her rough and she loved it. That was so long ago, sleep has taken away the edge, time taken away the strength, all her young men have gone now, there's just her. Time to clean the rust, to paint the bottom, check for leaks, time to move her one more time, maybe the last time, maybe not, she's fragile now. Oh! But wasn't she magnificent, back in the day, fire and storm and blazing battle with her young men making her the terror of the seas. Wasn't she he stuff of legend, now become her own myth. Once her boilers were hot and her guns hotter. Once blood ran down her decks, as her young men died. The stuff of legend, when the whole world was on fire, when tomorrow was not promised, when so many good ships and their young men, vanished beneath the sea. Now, there's just her, dreaming, being the myth to those who never felt power of her guns, those who listened to Grand Pa tell his tales and never really believed them. Being a Sunday morning entertainment. Move her slowly, she's fragile now, at the end of her story, she earned her rest. Let her sleep.
That was beautiful, Fred. You have a way with words.
I am glad to see a WWII vessel getting rid of post War changes. I have visited the USS Cassin Young and she is full of later additions and hardware. Thanks for all you do! TM retired museum curator
ok, what for are you insulting the intelligence of the guy in the thumbnail? the navy needs a waiter on board so they can feed the crew properly. said waiter's intelligence or lack has no bearing on the matter. 😉
😆😂🤣 Yeah, that guy in the thumbnail admits that "not being the sharpest tool in the shed" is evidenced by him making a career with a non-profit. 😉
@@usskiddveteransmuseum7568 you know, only the Fleming Yachts Fleming 55 ( now Fleming 60 ) actually comes with a dumbwaiter as part of the standard equipment. It really is a bit of technology that society has no real use for any more, yet it is a useful bit of technology.
Please save what you remove
I get why youre doing this backdating; I just feel a bit conflicted about it. All that Cold War era modifications and gear that is being removed and scrapped is still a part of USS Kidd's story / history, and it has always been lectured to museum patrons of other vessels and fields of study that to backdating when done should be reversable. In the end you folks are the Kidd's custodians, and I will trust your judgement on this. Thank you for the updates; I look forward to seeing her when everything is complete.
We don't ignore her Cold War history at all and seek to preserve it and honor ALL her crew members of all eras. The big factor in choosing her target date for restoration back in '82 was the fact that she escaped major structural modifications during her career and thus COULD be retrofitted to WWII configuration. CASSIN YOUNG, THE SULLIVANS, and VELOS (as well as all the Gearings and LAFFEY representing the Sumners) could never be walked backward due to major structural changes made to them. So, there are still numerous examples of that technology aboard KIDD's sister destroyers in the Historic Fleet as they all represent different periods of the Cold War era. 🙂
who is getting the equipment that you guys are taking off the ship? will it be on display somewhere too?
NAVSEA requires that it be scrapped. Since it's Cold War era, the other museum destroyers already have their sets still in place. Perhaps the metal can be used for souvenirs? 🤷♂️
@@usskiddveteransmuseum7568 I strongly advise against scrapping. The equipment is irreplaceable, even if other examples exist. The removed equipment should be offered to the other museum ships to be retained as spares - in the case that vandalism, theft, flooding (here's to you, Sully) or other destructive events were to occur. True, there is a cost to transport and store the equipment, and hopefully no destructive event will ever occur to those other ships - but if not so lucky, having authentic spares is like these is invaluable. Kidd, having no future need, would not be expected to bear the cost.
Should just leave the ship in it's last in service configuration
42 years too late for that. She's the only WWII configured destroyer in the world now. Unique.
Really very interesting. What will you do with the post war equipment? Is it suitable for other museum ships?
