    I graduated Trinity in 1968 with a major in German. I wish we had these programs when I was there. My son was an exchange student in Berlin during the reunification and benefited greatly. I also had 20 hours in Russian studies though Duke did not have "minors" at that time. I did spend 3 years as a translator on the Moscow "Hot Line" and four years in Munich with a government program as an Air Force officer and worked debriefing defectors. I thought I spoke good German from my studies at Duke and then found myself in Bavaria. A German once said to me "we don't understand them either"! I read an article in a British journal evaluating people who were bilingual (focusing on Welsh which I learned on my own as well as with some language programs. The general concurrence was that people who know more than one language know their own language better. Americans have a bad reputation in this matter. I remember riding a train in Germany when a couple and their son from (then) Czechoslovakia entered my cabin. I spoke in German with the parents and, the son not knowing German, I spoke with him in Russian, The woman accused me of lying that I was an American. All the best to the Duke German Studies program. Robert Roser, Duke 68.

    I majored in German at Duke (Trinity ‘88), and I’m very glad to see the department flourishing in this way. My professors made a real difference in my life, and I’m grateful to them. Universities absolutely must invest resources in foreign language instruction. Duke gets it!

    A special study about what happens to blacks after college sports?? They do what people in their situation have ALWAYS done for decades...they move on and live their lives. Some go on to the pros and become rich, and others get married and have families. Some die, some work, wtf? I'd really love to know why, instead of letting these athletes live their lives, why these 'researchers' are trying so damned hard to prove that the black student-athletes are 'victims' and find any kind of failure connected to college sports that they can blame White people for. Give it a fucking rest, already.

  • @colorofcrime
    @colorofcrime Год назад

    Unbelievable. All this research, resources, and money going into a study about how black people being involved in sports affects the entire black race....and we White people can't even have our own student union or voice pride for our own people and heritage without being labeled a fucking 'White Supremacist'. They have college courses specifically about 'black history' (mudhut building 101, I suppose?) _FOR_ black people, and statues of American historical figures are torn down all over America just because they were White. Exactly WHO has this supposed 'privilege' and 'supremacy' again??

  • @wilsonerika8
    @wilsonerika8 2 года назад

    This is a really good start. I hope the project will also examine the inter sport racial disparities. What I mean by that is the fact that CFB & CBB the mostly black sports fund the entire athletic enterprise. The profits from the labor of predominantly black athletes is used to fund scholarships for Olympic sports which are played by mostly white and affluent players. It is a racially regressive system. Yet one of the main objections to paying players more than a scholarship in addition to what we they can make via NIl, is that the school won’t be able to fund the other sports. Can you imagine a scenario where men and womens lacrosse, a sport that is 95% white, makes hundreds of millions and those athletes are told you can’t get any of the profit because we need the profit you make to fund the predominantly black basketball & football teams? It would NEVER happen. Not ever.
