Why Underburn in Commercial Forests: Prescribed Burning 101 on McCloud Soda Springs
Underburning is a controlled fire technique that targets lower vegetation like grasses and shrubs while protecting larger trees. It reduces forest floor debris, helping to prevent severe wildfires, improve wildlife habitats, and enhance overall forest health.

Its about time, they used to allways burn during the wet part of the year !!!!
Thank you Pacific Forest Trust for providing the opportunity to inform the public on the benefits of prescribe fire.
Yeah as long as The Forest Service has nothing to do with it🇺🇸🏴☠️😎

Great work, PFT, Terra Fuego, and partners...and wonderful video!
Better late than never. Excellent job
Thanks from a fifth generation Californian to all who made this brilliant video. GODSPEED all burnbosses. Learn and teach. 👋👱♀️🇺🇲
Thinning creates wind tunnels and does not reduce fire intensity or spreading. Thinning is also a convenient excuse for logging. Read Nature's Phoenix, 2nd edition, for a more nuanced discussion. Fire is key to maintain forest health, but this documentary oversimplifies the equation. I can't help but believe that Pacific Forest Trust, as well as several other nonprofits, are partnering with commercial interests in a less than an ideal way and to the detriment of the long-term health of our forests and the wildlife that call the forests home.
Is that such a bad thing? It’s a conservationists dream to do their work without the pressure of money, but I think that’s too idealistic. The reality is that NGOs can get more done in cooperation with industry than fighting them and their lobbying budget.
spreading misinformation about global warming causing large fires isn't helping the real problem of miss management
All for prescribed Burning, But as for Climate Change, pure Bullshit!
I was raised with this mindset, but what an incredible documentary, so well done! Here’s to PFT for investing in the real bottom line & TF for making it look so effortless. This is true environmentalism.
Well done!
Steven Richardson, the man, the myth, the Legend 😊

Better than clear cutting, but to be honest deadwood is critical to forest ecology, so saying that you’re improving the forest by removing unsuitable trees is not true. The best managed forest is the one with the least human intervention.
This is the kind of Forest Management video that should be shown to the public and not the bullshit from Trump and republicans of log...log...log...drill...drill....drill! With climate change devastating our western forests through terrible fires the public needs to know that we CAN sustainably manage forests and make them fire resiliant!
I don’t think “management” is the solution to forests. You just have to leave them alone. Forests aren’t even the problem, it’s finance and the economy. Maybe try managing that from top to bottom.
It is so strange how forestry in America works. Here in Germany clearcutting was only practiced for some decades, before and after sustainable forest management was and is the norm.
😂😂 More Elitist Agenda
Climate change is as real as oil being a fossil fuel. 🤥
Humans always want to have their cake and eat it too. Really we should be learning to live without all the modern amenities that require capitalism to acquire. We need to live among nature, not learn to better manage how we exploit it. It is still not going to be enough to turn the tides of climate destruction, it is only delaying the inevitable and giving false hope to our future as a species. We need radical change, back to our roots. As long as there is industrial property ownership, there will be incentive to destroy the planet, simple as that.
no map of trees in alaska or hawaii, did you just not know they are also states?
Can't wait to see the full film, way to go PFT!
The wisdom, passion and expertise Pacific Forest Trust brings to this issue is enough to inspire hope at a time when hope is in short supply.
I'm super excited to see the whole film!
legs!!!!!!!!
The connection between the forest and drought has not been made in Oregon, and they continue to clearcut their water resources away.
They need to spray the area with EM1
Excellent video. Excellent narration, drone work, blending of video and stills.
Yuk yuk and double yuk…..👎🏻
Can’t understand why there is not more of this going on in other states.... in the East if $$$ isnt the goal programs like this never really get going....

Wlnderful animals
What about reducing our consumption of animal products! Their waste and use of land is more destructive than all transportation combined!
While our work is focused on protecting and restoring forests for their benefits to wildlife, water, climate, and the economy, we have recently begun serving vegetarian-only menus at our events. Thanks for the comment!
its sad their endangered
