I reckon the word "Colonel" is pronounced that way, because the English speakers at the time were unable to pronounce the word, when it was introduced to them by a foreign speaker. It's just curious that the spelling was not adapted as is common for borrowed words.
Absolutely correct ! The word "Colonel" comes from the French "coronel," which was influenced by Italian "colonnello." The pronunciation changed over time, but the spelling stayed the same.

Please, don't be confused. Monophthongs are simple single vowels. Though a sound can be the same in a word, the spelling can vary depending on the word. 'ee' in 'see' and 'ea' in 'sea' have the same sound but different spelling. I hope you understand it now 🙏
