Kitchen Reno Ep.32 - Floating shelves installation
Просмотров 505Месяц назад
Kitchen Reno Series - Open shelves installation on the brick wall that is to be part of the storage space. Upper wall will have a pot rack, and lower wall will have floating shelves. The shelves are dimensional lumber finished in Yakisugi style which is also incorrectly known as Shou Sugi Ban. These are fastened to the brick wall using 1/2" threaded rods, not necessarily considered concealed sh...
Kitchen Reno Ep.31 - Drawer box construction update
Просмотров 8192 месяца назад
Kitchen Reno Series - Drawer box construction changes from the first prototype. Front faces are slightly thinner and the back faces are thicker. Rods making up the drawer sides are all hazelnut and have their bark intact. Drawer faces are now stained darker and have a top coat applied in the form of water based polyurethane. Drawer hardware is still Blum Movento undermount slides.
Kitchen Reno Ep.30 - Range Installation

Kitchen Reno Series - Wolf range GR366 which stands for gas range 36 inch 6 burners. Thanks to covid, It took 14 months to get here and sat in the warehouse for another month before it got delivered. Gas line was hooked up branching from the existing line supplying the hot water tank. Due to the heavy weight, supports were set up under the joists to prevent the floor from sagging.
Kitchen Reno Ep.29 - Making drawer pulls

Kitchen Reno Series - Making drawer pulls. Couldn't find any that fit the cabinet style so decided to make my own. Cut from 1/8" thick copper bar and bent using a hammer and vice. Drilled the holes, rounded the edges, and used vinegar to start the patina process. The pull is designed to be installed from the front with the fastener visible, using brass flat head to compliment the copper.
Kitchen Reno Ep.28 - Dishwasher Installation

Kitchen Reno Series - Installing a new dishwasher to replace the decade old Kenmore. It's a Miele G7566SCVi and it does not come with a door. For that you need to pay another $440.. which is.. what it is. Straight forward installation, removed the old unit and installed a new 20 Amp receptacle only because I didn't want to hardwire it. The new unit comes with the supply and drain hose already i...
Kitchen Reno Ep.27 - Laminar flow faucet update, LED swap, sink drain replacement
Просмотров 2143 месяца назад
Kitchen Reno Series - Changed the kitchen faucet to laminar flow. I find aerated flow to be too loud, and I like the clear look of the laminar. Also swapped out the original halogen lights on the range hood to LEDs and replaced the sink drain. The current sink drain is copper plated and will not patina, so replacing it with the new pure copper drain flange so it matches the copper sink.
Kitchen Reno Ep.26 - Faucet replacement
Просмотров 2294 месяца назад
Kitchen Reno Series - Time to install new kitchen faucet, coincidently arrived same day as the countertop installation. Finding one that I liked was harder than expected. I wanted a single lever gooseneck with a pull down spray that didn't look too modern, with good flow rate and no automatic sensors of any kind. Finally found one from Perrin and Rowe that I liked, the actual replacement was th...
Kitchen Reno Ep.25 - Countertop installation

Kitchen Reno Series - Countertop finally installed. Looked at Granite, Marble, Quartzite, Dekton, Natural Stone and Concrete, and chose Quartz in the end. The sink and peninsula countertops needed to be light beige, with no distinct markings but subtle patterns only when up close. This is so they can act as a balancer to bring together all the other elements, both on the wall, on the countertop...
Kitchen Reno Ep.24 - Sink, island, peninsula cabinet, and Blum Tip On installation

Kitchen Reno Series - One of the hard drives failed and took with it all the footages of making the cabinet carcasses, the installation of farmhouse copper sink, garburator installation and all the plumbing required. Took it to a data recovery place and was told it was scratched beyond recovery. Finished up the Blum Movento slide installation, and the Tip on modules for the hidden drawers under...
Kitchen Reno Ep.23 - Drawer box prototype and Blum Movento installation

Kitchen Reno Series - Wasn't so keen on the standard dovetail drawer box. Took a while to come up with the idea but once I realized the advantages of the undermount slides, it made it possible to create a new type of drawer that befits Loksoon's pinched pottery. The new design was time consuming with many tedious steps, but I think it turned out alright. Probably around 90% of what the final pr...

Kitchen Reno Series - Drawer box construction with dovetail joints from the previous video. This is an inset drawer for a frameless carcass, with a millimeter gap around the entire perimeter as discussed in episode 20. Movento slides won't arrive for another week so temporarily using the Tandem slides to continue the drawer making process.
Kitchen Reno Ep.21 - Dovetail joint and rough lumber processing
Просмотров 8596 месяцев назад
Kitchen Reno Series - Quick example of how to cut a dovetail joint using hand tools. There are different dovetail types - through, half-blind, full-blind, sliding, and secret. I'm going with the through dovetail. Also, an equally quick example of how to process rough sawn timber into fully dressed 1/2" boards.
Kitchen Reno Ep.20 - Making cabinet frame
Просмотров 7117 месяцев назад
Kitchen Reno Series - Cleared the workbench and connected them to process all the sheet goods. Starting the cabinet carcass with a small standalone unit, working out the style and method of assembly. Settled on 3/4" marine plywood with 1" poplar edge for material, and frameless inset hybrid for the style. No glue for the body as I need to take these apart and reassemble them in the kitchen.

    That rockwool job was so clean and satisfying to watch. My interior walls have original horizontal full length western hemlock boards and I've never been behind them but I am inspired to see if I can figure out a way to get those off and on again

      well.. the burners aren't anything to write home about, and I'm not a big fan of sealed burners, but the oven part of it is awesome. Compared to our previous oven, when using the exact same recipes, everything turns out so much better. I'm not sure how it's doing that.

      @@SnakesandDinosaurs Thanks - ours has been good, 1 week in. The oven gets hot, funny hearing the gas kick on and off again like 50 years ago at childhood home. We'll mostly use the oven for parties/holidays and now looking it appears the riser only adds a few more inches (up to 20) to push the heat up the wall. Maybe a nice to have or can just plan to re-tile if ever needed due to dirt or heat popping the tiles.

    You are a brilliant man, but you must know by now that venting exhaust right next to the air intake was a turd move. Building code (at least in my city) requires a minimum of 10 feet between the exhaust and intake. I too thought about bringing the make-up air into the hood cover, but there just isn't an easy way to do that in my case. Instead I'm going to put a 12x24" grille over the stove and off to the side. This will be where the intake filter can be serviced. I like your damper. I didn't know there are ones like that.

    • @SnakesandDinosaurs
      @SnakesandDinosaurs 2 месяца назад

      You are correct on both accounts. In BC there is a 3m code for both residential and commercial kitchens. As for the turd move.. well.. I seem to have no shortages of those, and not just limited to building stuff. The only saving grace/grey zone in my case may be that I already have an intake on the upper floor, and this range hood specific intake was to offset the two upper end of the exhaust, setting 3 (900 CFM) and 4 (1200 CFM). In retrospect, 95% of the time the setting stays at 1 and I've only ever gone to setting 2 a handful of times. I think the 10 inch duct venting directly outside makes a big difference.

    • @genefulm
      @genefulm 2 месяца назад

      @@SnakesandDinosaurs That's what I am thinking too. Most of the time we will be using the lower CFM settings. I only imagine using the 750 CFM when we burn something. :) I enjoyed the videos.

      @@SnakesandDinosaurs Thanks mate. It looks like they're around $45 for a pair (!). Ok for a one-off but maybe not for the 15-20 I want to do, which is too bad b/c I really like the concept.

    • @SnakesandDinosaurs
      @SnakesandDinosaurs 5 месяцев назад

      That's not a bad price actually, they are around $85 CAD up here for a 24". I don't have experience with the quality/performance, but there are more affordable alternative undermounts, if you try somewhere like Cabinetparts they have a bunch of selections.

    Honestly I loved the original drawers (not sure how that detracted from her homemade mugs) however I can appreciate the unique look and feel of the updated version with the pegs and there’s a sweetness of knowing those pegs came from your parents awesome property. It would be neat to see you use more lumber from those rotting trees, I’m sure there’s a ton of character from worm holes to color/grain variation. Definitely cost savings to use homegrown lumber and pegs except more time perhaps, depending on how you did your dovetails which I love too and of course processing a tree is a lot of labor and time but wow it’d be a blast to watch. Pls don’t push out your final drawers, I love inset and with all the character added imo it’s perfect, that may be too much. I’ve seen cool idea from another person here on YT Alexander something and anyways he does a solid wood wrap (he uses wood sparingly to give the appearance of without actually covering the entire plywood boxes as the countertops hide the rest) to give a layered appearance which stuck out further than the drawers which I get the sense when you pulled out your drawers that may be what you’re looking for. I like the texture, I also love the smooth wood but I think overall it’ll have a hand built quality to it with the textured, uneven edges. I’ve never thought about using a wire wheel so that was a neat trick. What would be really neat is trying some type of sheet metal or copper/brass sheets, the decorative kind as a base for veggies, potato and onion drawers, solid metal sheeting for a flour drawer, etc. as a way to store essentials. I’d love to see what you come up with!

    • @SnakesandDinosaurs
      @SnakesandDinosaurs 5 месяцев назад

      Thank you so much for your comment, I really appreciate your write-up, and you're right there's nothing wrong with the original dovetail, I just wanted to create something special for her earthenware is all. The drawers being pushed out, I was trying to see if the texturing on the edges would show through but you're right it was too much at half inch. At a shallower depth it does create a nice subtle highlight on all the top edges tho. And speaking of texturing, for the rest of the drawers, I use a restorer tool with a 3" wide wire wheel, so it's a much faster process. Thanks again for watching.

    Great craftsmanship. Few pointers. Playing cards make for cheap and great and cheap shims when fitting doors and drawers. Second , use an over sized drill bit when drillimg oit the hole on the front of your drawer box. This allows you to micro adjust your drawer front to the opening.
