In this video I take a quick look at Kahtoola Microspikes, which provide reliable traction on slippery winter ground. Filmed in January 2024 while testing out Inov-8’s new Mudtalon Speed fell running shoes. Blencathra is one of my favourite Lakeland fells, and one I’ve experienced in all kinds of weather throughout the seasons. This was extra special though - such a privilege to be up there above the clouds with just the high fell-tops visible like little islands. Amazing day!

how well do they grip on wet rocks/ asphalt? Seems like they are meant for soft soil/ mud, but was wondering if you find they are slippery on wet hard surfaces? Beautiful location thanks for the video.

Thanks! They do seem true to size but I’m often caught between 7.5 and 8 so often end up wishing I’d got the other size! I’d say they’re the same size as mudclaws and x-talons, only more roomy in the toe-box.

Very interesting video. What was your first impression on your run up Blencathra?
So far so good! I’m resting an injury at the moment (not caused by the shoes!) so haven’t been out in them as much as I would’ve liked. I possibly could’ve gone half a size down, but it’s so hard to tell until you’ve worn them in a bit. General comfort and traction seem good so far though.

Great, concise intro review! How curved is the last? Compared to the Mudclaw (which I’m running in), it appears the toe box curves in more. If it’s anything like the curved last of VJ shoes, I find while it gives the big toe side more room, it squashes the pinky side area, which doesn’t work for a straight foot like mine 😢
Thanks @p1deckard 😃 To me the whole toebox feels quite spacious - but you’re right, they are shaped more like the VJ shoes than the Mudclaw. I haven’t run in them as much as I would’ve liked yet due to an injury so don’t have loads of miles to comment on. There is always the wide fit option if that would work for you - or stick with the Mudclaws which as you know are great for soft ground.

Any suggestion if we can drop down a half size with the wider too box?
So far I've found the length and midfoot to be true to size (I have the precision fit version). I did try the half size down as well but it was a bit tight on my big toe. With most running shoes I wish there was a 7 3/4! 🤣
@@SummitsAndSeasons Thanks, I usually wear an 11 in most shoes but so far have to get 12’s for race shoes.
I'm assuming it performs great on mud but how does it perform on wet rock and for scrambling sections on long winter trail runs in the peaks or lakes?
@@bilaltahir9978 So far only used them on soft ground (and thin frozen snow). X-talons tend to be pretty good on both mud and rock and these have very similar outsole.
