Mic Shootout - Slate ML1/Neumann TLM49/AKG C414XLS/Aston Origin
Просмотров 3,3 тыс.Год назад
In this microphone shootout we compare 4 large diaphragm condenser microphones from € 198 to € 1.500. As one of our contestants is the Slate ML1 which can emulate other much more expensive microphones, we decided to spice up this comparison by adding 2 microphone modelling plug ins: Antares Mic Mod and IK Multimedia Mic Room. @@kaplanhirschmannmusic893 I've had mine for a few months. On the stock setting, I have the same feelings as you about the mic, kind of dull. So I leave the HPF on at all times. I've also just changed out the super cheap mic cable to a Gotham GAC-7 and it suprisingly evened out the midrange perfectly. I'm still putting it through it's paces but overall, i'm really loving it. It's a rich sounding mic. Next up is trying out a few different EF86's for it. Best of luck.

    Mazal Tov on these gorgeous and haunting vocals and composition. Even my 16 yr old daughter was drawn in and curious. May I ask what mics and technique were used to record the piano? The piano sound is exquisite as well! Bravo

      Thank you for you kind words! The piano sound in this shootout is the combination of two Kontakt-Libraries from Native Instruments. It's the "Grandeur" combined with the "Una Corda". The "Una Corda" adds some mechanical noise and overtones to the very clean sounding "Grandeur".

      @kaplanhirschmannmusic893 8 месяцев назад

      You are partially right. It has been written with the BBC SO to test it, after we got it. When I tried to modify it in a way so that it works with the VSL Synchronized Special Edition however I quickly realised that I would be necessary to record some parts again, to get the dynamics right. So it isn't just edited.

      Thank you for the clarification! I also read your caption only now😓 I always find quite funky to just copy a region from one library to another. For example I’m noticing that vsl has dynamics controllable with cc even in shorts. As you mentioned it’s very important to re-record the dynamics and other parameters. The vsl player has less articulations but more parameters available to to automate compare to core. Matter of fact I haven’t yet decided where to spend my money this Black Friday! 😂 You had both for a while , what is your personal experience? Thank you for your time:)

      @@simonemicieli9024 I think in this example the BBC SO works better, but I like both. We have the VSL SE Vol 1. und Vol 2. and often use their solo instruments - especially wind instruments. For ensemble strings or brass on the other hand we tend to use the BBC SO because it offers more dynamic layers compared to the "smaller" VSL Editions. Best regards, Florian

    The slate Mic is only featured first 1 time. The AKG is featured first 4 times. (Referring to First Test) The beginning of the Vocal is mellow, and not exciting the reverb or compression etc. as much as latter in the track.. SOOO, the first Mic always leaves off a better impression - louder is better ect! A better test would be a short sample 4 words of the vocal looped with strong continents and S's Test 2: 2 measures of overhead drum cymbals, hard splashing, and A/ B /A/B every Mic against each other, ... 😂

    I'll plump for BBCSO Core, but that's only because I have it myself (I don't have the VSL library, and as far as I know this is the first time I've heard it). I know one thing, though. BBCSO Core to me is a marvellous tool. It has given me my own private orchestra. For hobbyist composers like myself, that was unheard of until comparatively recently. Thanks for making and posting this comparison.

  • @arthurneeman
    @arthurneeman Год назад

    On this example I would say that BBCSO Core sounds better (more live) than very clean (sterile) VSL libraries. But it seems that in this example at least Horns are not EQed properly to be comparable to BBCSO Horns a4. Therefore both libraries are not comparable. Each piece should be mastered and then compared.

The first unit i had suddenly started producing a ocean-like humble noise, making it unusable. The second unit sounded fine, but there were moments where the noise would "come up" and disappear. I found it unreliable. In comparison to a TLM 103 and an AT4040, i found it to be very sibilant for my voice, even more than the TLM 103 Keep up the good work!

  • @sunnyschramm9650
    @sunnyschramm9650 2 года назад

    From a first view its BBC for me - because it sounds like everything belongs together - like the real thing. the synchronized from vsl sounds like an not yet mixed and mastered project (and yes - kind of harsh and synthy on long notes). BUT if its the complete same midi-project that was used on both libraries...then the comparison is questionable! you have to know your library and how it works - the vsl maybe uses totally different mod/vel-curves, different synchron mixer-settings, etc. - and there are some really amazing sounding vsl-mockups out there. "if" the bbc and the mix is right out of the box without any mixing or eqíng - its really really good! you can focus on your composition instead of sound/mixing/etc.

    • @kaplanhirschmannmusic893
      @kaplanhirschmannmusic893 2 года назад

      There is only an EQ on the sum in both versions. No compression or eq on any of the tracks. The idea was to show how good either of this to libraries can sound without the need to put any effort in a real mix. Reverb in both cases was logic's built in chroma verb. The track was written with the BBC SO. We had of course to edit the midi tracks and controller data to make it work with the vsl. So the midi data isn't exactly the same in both versions. I guess the major issue of the "SE"-editions of the vsl is the fact, that it only has the velocity layers per instrument. At least as far as I know. The BBC SO Core uses up to 3 velocity layers.

    As a movie producer who had to sell a product, I would prefer BBCSO, as a musician VSL. Spitfire Audio has managed to establish a certain sound with BBCSO (and other libraries) that pleases the ear of listeners that are not classically trained and/or have never been sitting in a proper concert hall listening to a real orchestra. There is a market for this as well as there is a market for trailers starting with Albion's Easter Island Hits. I personally do not like the Spitfire Sound but I understand that this is now some sort of industry standard.

    Hi, I'm just starting out and I'm really disoriented. I've a lot of free libraries but I can hear the difference in quality of the commercial ones. I'm still esperimenting with genres so, I don't have a style or a voice. there are many all in one offers in this price range, even only from spitfire itself. do you think ARO is a good choice? considering the lack of legatos and the numerous add one that will come out in the future it could be one of their more expensive. Usually when a company sticks the "abbey road" name on a product it will become more expensive eve if the quality is the same of some products of their "normal"line do you think this is the case? between spitfire products I'm constantly switching interest between Abbey road One, BBCSO and Albion One. if you should choose one of these what would it be?

    Well yet another unfair comparison of different orch libraries, As I sad multiple times, you can only compare them if your try get to its limits on each of them and not just comparing the same region of midi notes. Apart from that Out of the box sound isn't what a pro cares about.

    • @kaplanhirschmannmusic893
      @kaplanhirschmannmusic893 3 года назад

      Thanks for your feedback. As both libraries are entry-level they try to give the user a "ready" sound out of the box. BBC Core is "premixed" and in the VSL SE Vol. 1 each instrument comes with it's own (quite good) EQ preset. Therefore it doesn't seem unfair to me to compare them without much tweaking the sound. We did however tweak the midi tracks to make each track sound as realistic as we could with each library.

    • @nepomukism
      @nepomukism 3 года назад

      @@kaplanhirschmannmusic893 Well, while I didn't wanted to offend your hard work on this and didn't wanted to hurt anyone I still can see how libraries and the impressions of them for users change if they are used deeply vs if they are used in comparison video showcases. Listen to the singe library videos of each library compared to the vs videos. It is always the same wrong impression caused by this. At least I would recommend to add a real orchestra to the comparison at minimum. Otherwise always the loudest or the brightest will win.

    • @kaplanhirschmannmusic893
      @kaplanhirschmannmusic893 3 года назад

      In both versions there isn't much mixing going on. It's just levelling, one instance of Logic's Chromaverb and then an EQ, a compressor and a limiter on the masterbus. The idea behind this test was to find out how both libraries sound without much tweaking. With the synchronized version of VSL's special edition it's much easer and faster to work as before. When we use VSL instruments we normally also use VSL's MIR - which is fantastic, but really can slow you down. I also prefer the BBCSO by far in this case but I think also think I should do some further testing before I come to a conclusion.
