Deep Dive: Breeding Freshwater Aquatic Isopods
Freshwater aquatic isopods reproduce at a rapid rate. I’ve bred 1000s of them and here I yap for what feels like 1000s of hours about some of the things I’ve learned along the way.
As always thank you to the countless people who have helped #thesopodagenda grow. It’s been amazing seeing them become more known and popular in the hobby and I can’t wait to see what 2025 brings as more people keep them.
This is a deep dive into the breeding of freshwater aquatic isopods so it is a little bit exhaustive ( a yap fest I know). I tried to say everything I could think of that I've learned along the way. I’ll answer all the questions I can in the comments and of course please let me know what you w...

    Are your aquatic isopods wild caught? I recently took a few swipes with a net through some local water weeds ( in MA, so I had to stomp a hole in the ice first ) put my catch in 4 five gallon bucksts, probably 2/3 full each.literally took less than ten minutes. I then seperated the isopods from the buckets by pouring small quantities into a white dish tub and pawed through with some latex gloves, sucking up any I saw with a turkey baster couple hours later I had well over 100 isopods in another bucket which were rinsed several times to remove most of the filth. The trick to getting them cleanly then is to swirl the water vigorously, allowing the remaining bits of debris and the isopods to collect in the middle. The isopods immediately move to the outer edge of the bucket and begin the unending trip around the circumference of the bucket, making it easy to suck them up from clear water, avoiding any of the questionable bits remaining after the rinse cycle.

    Is it possible to keep scuds and isopods in the same aquarium? Pros and cons?

    • @inmytanks
      @inmytanks 8 дней назад

      @@ilaarokeP Some species do occur together in nature so I think it’s possible. I’m not an expert on scuds. I guess it would depend on how aggressive they really are. Personally it would be something I would try without overthinking it too much. So only con I can imagine is if scuds actually eat the occasional baby isopod. But I don’t know if they would.

    wonderfull video on a an incredibly overlooked species, concidering just how common they are in the wild, in most of the northern hemisphere, and how popular small ecosystem aquariums have become in recent years. thank you for putting a spotlight on those cute little buggers! one thing i found, is that dragon stones, or just a pile of rough lava rocks give them a safe haven, even if you have small, not to predatory fish in the tank. PS: can somebody please tell me what the bright green "moss" @ 13:10 is?

    • @inmytanks

      Thank you !! I agree. It's crazy that these guys are just kinda getting the appreciation they deserve :) Totally agree with dragon stone! I haven't done lava rock yet but I need to try that so thank you for that. Rocks are supreme for safety ^^ The moss you're seeing I think is some Riccia fluitans stuck on the sponge filter. The rest in that shot I think is just hair algae xD. There's some christmas/giant willow/java moss throughout the video though.

    Great video, informative, beautiful aquariums and species. I'm curious though. Do they require copper in their diet like terrestrial Isopods? Is the calcium deficiency in the snails related to the Isopods in any way? Water parameters will vary I'm sure but their effects on those parameters could cause problems for other crustaceans if unexpected. So, I wonder if this is what I'm seeing in your video.

    • @inmytanks
      @inmytanks 24 дня назад

      Hey hey. Thank you for watching! You’re too kind. There’s some variety in my snails condition but I do not believe the degradation is due to a calcium deficiency. My water tends to be more on the acidic side and some of their shells do not look as nice especially as they get older and have a hard time keeping up. I also recently used no planaria in the tank I filmed this video in and I find that stress has a big effect on my snails ability to keep their shells healthy in my water. I haven’t noticed the isopods making any difference with the snails shell health.

    • @bletz5732
      @bletz5732 24 дня назад

      @inmytanks Thank you for your time. They look good, and healthy and appears as though it's all surface degradation and no spirals so I believe you are correct. I'm glad I asked. I'm really considering getting some for my tanks but am dealing with some imbalances at the moment and am reluctant and am just starting to look into to them. Thank you again.

    • @inmytanks
      @inmytanks 25 дней назад

      @@saabtech3510 Hey as you can see I keep my main culture with shrimp and I have them together in a few different places. I haven’t noticed a difference in the shrimp breeding. But I breed both of them together with no issues / noticeably decrease with either. The shrimp out compete the pods if anything due to their size/strength/mobility advantage. I keep them in my killifish egg trays and have hatched many eggs with them. They don’t eat viable fish eggs in my experience.

    Something to keep in mind is that many of these creatures (Asellus Aquaticus is a prime example) are sequential hermaphrodites. What this means is that all of them are born female, and then transition to male after their egg-laying molt. When collecting these from the wild to try and culture them, you must therefor be careful not to only select the larger specimens, because those are likely to all be male!
