Unspotted Saw-whet Owl
Unspotted Saw-whet inhabits the high elevation montane forest meadows and farmlands of Central America. Originally described from Costa Rica, today it is a difficult find. This is a very sought after species along its entire range from Chiapas in Southern Mexico to Western Panama. Thought to be resident, it is found mostly above 8,000 feet in elevation although records exist in Guatemala from as low as 4,600 feet. An unsociable species, the Unspotted Saw-whet Owl is mostly non-vocal except during a short breeding season. Closely related to the Northern Saw-whet Owl, it has been suggested that Unspotted Saw-whet Owl evolved after crossing the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico (the narrowest...

Western Screech Owl
Просмотров 168 тыс.7 лет назад
The Western Screech-Owl is a very common resident in much of the Western U.S., Canada and Mexico and is often the most abundant night predator in its range. Separation in the field, of the Screech-Owls, is actually only feasible by voice. The Western Screech-Owl can be distinguished with his primary "bouncing-ball" (territorial) call. This is a common owl in the west. The sexes are alike in app...
Guatemalan Pygmy Owl in Central America
Просмотров 4637 лет назад
Guatemalan Pygmy-Owl is a new tentative division to the pygmy-owls in Central America. Both pygmy-owls and screech-owls of Central America have long been confusing, poorly studied, and/or defined. Until very recently pygmy-owls have been thrown into one big group of Northern Pygmy-Owls. Science is still struggling with dividing up this group of owls into logical order so that it is known what i...

Guatemalan Pygmy-Owl is a new tentative division to the pygmy-owls in Central America. Both pygmy-owls and screech-owls of Central America have long been confusing, poorly studied, and/or defined. Just now are these owls beginning to become clarified and understood in science. The gnoma pygmy-owls have long been lumped into one big collage of owls. Konig and White (2008) suggested a much cleane...
Guatemalan Screech Owl
Просмотров 9437 лет назад
The Guatemalan Screech-Owl is grouped by some authors together with the Vermiculated Screech-Owl. We believe that this is an improper classification and further studies will clearly separate these owls. The Guatemalan Screech-Owl has previously been grouped together as a race of the Vermiculated Screech-Owl (Megascops vermiculatus) although it has differences in behavior, vocalizations, and app...
Crested Owl
Просмотров 9677 лет назад
The Crested Owl is very distinctive and unlikely to be confused with any other. It can be found in both Central and South America. The Crested Owl is a medium size owl (15-17 in. in length). Its size is similar to the other medium sized owls like Barn, Long and Short-eared. Very little is known about this birds behavior or habits although it is fairly common in some parts of Mexico and Costa Ri...

This is the calling of a juvenile Barred owl that was spotted in Florida.
Don’t shine flashlights at owls! It ruins their night vision and generally harasses them
I had a pair of these that lived in my neighborhood, theyd call to each other in the evenings and I'd leave my windows open to hear it
Crazy that barn owls have the most terrifying screech and yet these guys are called the screech owl
Also here in eastern-Finland
I was living in a tent for two months on a farm and would hear two western screech owls talking every night before bed, it was awesome. I miss those nights
Don’t shine flashlights at them, as this photographer seems to be doing. It’s not good for their night vision
Very cool 😎
Up in Sonoma County they would come out in late spring summer and early fall
I have one the I can whistle to call him or her and sometimes the owl will fly close to me .❤❤❤🤗
Just move out to the country Michigan I'm excited to try to attract different owls using the different calls and such very exciting discover Owling!
Heard an owl this morning and recorded it. Sure sounds like this! But other times of the year I've heard the Hoo hoo sound which is a different sound and slower and deeper. Is this also the Western Screech?
This is what I have been hearing all along in my backyard and did not know it was a Barred Owl!
I love owls and nature! I just dont like someone shining a flashlight at the owl and invading its space.
yo yo yo my name is mepissypants
That messes up their ability to see shining a light in their eyes! Stupid humans.
I sit on my porch and play this on my phone. I'm in Tennessee, and I get about 50 to come over and cry back to phone 😂
Today I saw it in my house so that I come to the video
♥️♥️♥️
I had one fly into my windshield a few years ago. I stopped, but thought it was dead. But it soon began moving. So I took the bird home and put it in a cardboard box with a small blanket. The next morning, it was sitting up moving around, but it's head flopped about and it only circled to the left when moving. I found a sanctuary in Rowena, Oregon that took the bird in. I didn't hear from them for two months, so I figured either he (they determined he was a male) was unreleasable, or had passed from his injuries. But then I got a call, asking me to pick up the owl and release him as close to where he'd been hit as possible. Turns out they have a very small range. So I went and got him. At first, he was cool with just chilling in his carrier box, but about half way back to Goldendale, he got out. He then perched on my passenger seat headrest, watching intently as I drove. He didn't move from there. When I got back to the place he'd flown into me, I actually had to shoo him from the car! He flew off into a nearby pine, looked back at me for a few moments, then disappeared into the forest. That was the last time I saw him. If I've related this incident before, I apologize. I'm dealing with "chemo fog" although I've had (hopefully!) my last treatment.
I know this comment is old but it was just such a wonderful story, how wonderful of you to help that precious owl. I really hope by now you've finished your treatment and are doing well <3
Dumbass!! Never shine any light on an owl...idiot
Nice video with calling/sounds, but this owl name is Himalayan Wood Owl, the Barred Owlet has different call, body structure and colour of Eyes. Thank you very much for nice video.

I heard a couple of these guys this morning. I live in the high desert in Washington. No woods here, but do glad they love to hang out on the Eastside too. What amazing creatures.
Finally found that hiss sound I was looking for. A juvenile barred owl hissing.
0:40 that owl had a look like it wanted to murder someone
Beautiful
my,favorite,bird
Those stupid birds never shut up...
The western screech owl makes the same whinnying hoot call as its equivalent species, the eastern screech owl. Quite an extraordinary distinctive call coming from these species of owls. I see clearly what Indigenous Native tribal people consider owls to be spiritual embodiments associated with earthly correlations between life and death.
My daughter and I heard a barred owl calling out a few nights ago. We’re in south Louisiana and it was a warm night. Such a beautiful sound and gorgeous bird.
Im hearing 3 to 4 in my back yard right now! South La here too
one of these guys is outside my window rn with his friend :) so cute
An american cutie
Too cute
While I live in Indiana and enjoy this owl’s cousin the Eastern Screech Owl, I REALLY enjoyed your video! You had it all-great sound, video, and to top it off, the educational notations. Thank you!!
Hey fellow hoosier. By any chance have you ever heard an owl screech extremely loud that kinda sounds like a monkey? I did the other night but can’t find out which one it is. I know it was an owl though
Hearing this exact owl right now. Every time I hear an owl someone in my life dies…
It has its suspicions
Is this sound good or bad
Bad
Regular call.
Yep! That’s them. Day and night in my back yard. Atlanta, GA
Wow great vid. Beautiful! Lucky
Ñ ño p PP ppp
I’ve heard a few trills similar to this in Washington.
