Late starter to instrument playing...but now aspiring to competent, enjoyable playing of, mainly, instruments in the mandolin family. There are no apologies for the quality of any singing, as a good sing-a-long is good for the heart and soul.
The Dark Island (Air) (Iain McLachlan)
The lyrics I had in mind when playing the tune were those written by David Silver…reproduced below, should you want to sing along.
Away to the westward, I’m longing to be
Where the beauties of heaven, unfold by the sea
Where the sweet purple heather, blooms fragrant and free
On a hilltop, high above, the Dark Island
Oh Isle of my childhood, I’m dreaming of thee
As the steamer leaves Oban, and passes Tiree
Soon I’ll capture the magic, that lingers for me
When I’m back, once more upon, the Dark Island
So gentle the sea breeze, that ripples the bay
Where the stream joins the ocean, and young children play
On a strand of pure silver, I’ll welcome each day
And I’ll roam, forever more, the Dark Island
Oh Is...
Oh Is...

I was introduced to this tune, and was inspired to learn it, when played by Laura-Beth Salter on Mandolin Mondays (#432). My version is therefore based on Laura-Beth Salter’s, available @ ruclips.net/video/oYKcrh_W5-U/видео.htmlsi=P1jImQiTWsf45JZP , assisted by the dots provided by Nigel Gather @ nigelgatherer.com/tunes/tunes/S/Shaws.html Played on a Shippey Axe Mandolin.

This tune is based on the dots provided on Nigel Gatherer’s website - nigelgatherer.com/tunes/tunes/M/McKeF.html - where it’s described as a slow reel. I’ve played it more like a slow air. I took delivery yesterday of the Paul Shippey Axe Mandolin I play in the video, which I have been waiting 2.75 years for! (I believe Paul’s waiting list for an instrument at the moment is around 3 years). It ...

Well done, and good of you to attribute the tune and specific lyrics of this version correctly.
Great performance!
Thank you, much appreciated Frithjof 👍
Such a beautiful instrument has a bright and sweet sound.... I've always loved that piece of music, it's beautiful! That mandolin sings in your hands! 😀
Thank you…I agree, it’s a lovely piece.
masterfully played, very well sir! 😀
Kind of you to say so, Jairo…thanks for listening and commenting. I hope you are keeping well 😉
Beautiful tune and loving the tone of your Shippey, love the bodhran too!
Thanks, Andrew.
So pretty. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for commenting.
Thank you. This is very well played. May God bless you and your family.
Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for commenting.
beautiful piece... the instruments fit together very well resulting in a balanced and good sounding mix... well done
Thank you very much, Toomas.
What chords are you playing on the octave?
Part A, bars 1-8: 1 Am, 2 D & G, 3 Am, 4 G, 5 Am, 6 G, 7 Em & G, 8 Am. part B, bars 9-16, repeat bars 1-8. Simple 2 finger chords for each of the chords.
@@johnwilliamson6846 Thank you, love the tune and I enjoy your channel! I played this tune on my octave and it sounds very majestic and rich!
@brianpouillon1353 No problem…glad you enjoyed the tune and enjoy the channel and that you got a great sound out of your OM playing the tune 👍
Lovely! What octave mando is that?
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for commenting. The OM is made by Ivor Pickard (it’s what is referred to on his website as the OM C-Basic model (though the scale length is approx 1” shorter than his standard scale length) - www.pickardacoustics.com/
Beautiful John. Next to great picking and feel, you have some great recorded sound...
Thank you, Frank. My recording set up (other than when I occasionally record direct into, the iPad) is more or less always the same…but being Sat at a different angle to mic (the ideal angle of which I never remember!) can make a notable difference to the recorded sound.
Very nicely played, John, and a bit tricky, I imagine, with those snaps and triplets and semiquaver runs.
Many thanks, Richard…as noted on MC, tricky but attractive 😉
I have a Seagull S6 (Godin) mandolin and it seems to be patterned after your Vega. I really like the sounds you are getting and I'm learning the same tunes so I can also use you videos to come up with a backup guitar part. Thank you!!!
Thanks. Glad you like the sound of the Vega. Pleasing to hear that you are learning some of the tunes I’ve played…let me know, please, which ones you arrange accompaniment for. Yes, the Seagull S6 has an outer body shape similar to the Vega…the key thing about the Vega mando I have is the cylindrical back (I think the S6 has a flat back…and flat top???).
Beautiful playing John. Thanks for sharing 👏👏👏👏🙏🏿
Thank you. 🤝
Lovely, John. You coax the most beautiful tone out of that mandolin.
Thank you very much, Richard.
Wonderful. Thank you for your music, mate!
Thanks, Jerrel, much appreciated.
Sensitive playing with good tone!
Thank you, Frithjof.
Nice pace. Let that beautiful tune speak!
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for commenting.
Outstandingly good, John. Wonderful tone.
Your high praise is much appreciated, Richard.
Thanks very muvh John, I really appreciate your unapologetic ethos, a good tune/song is great for the heart and soul. From a new subscriber in Lancashire. Where in the UK are you?
Thanks for listening and commenting, David…I’m based in Cheshire (near Wilmslow).
Very pleasant 🎶
Glad you enjoyed it, David. Thanks for listening and commenting.
Sounds wonderful John, beautiful melody, big like friend
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for listening and commenting.
Foot tapingly good, check out the rampart version
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for commenting. Yes, I’m familiar with that stirring version.
Brilliant video, have learnt many tunes from you now, thank you. Keep it up
Glad you enjoyed it…and pleased to hear you have learnt tunes from the channel. Enjoy your playing!
It's a more percussive strumming sound
Thank you for your comment 👍
That was great. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Lovely playing!!
Thank you, David… much appreciated.
Well played John. You’re getting a really nice tone from the Shippey 👍
Thanks, Tom…This is the first tune I’ve posted in a while, and it isn’t one that ‘shows off’ the Shippey. However, one of the benefits the Shippey is that it lends itself to a broad range of tunes form a broad range of genres…and readily does them justice.
Absolutely, it seems to have the perfect mix of warmth and strength of tone. I think that about mine too. 👍 🎶
Nice timing, nice double-stops, nice everything!
I agree with Frank, who is the master of the slow, emotional mandolin, so praise indeed. Beautiful, John.
Thank you both, Frank and Richard, your positive comments are much appreciated.
@richardcarver6849 Much appreciated, thank you.
Very nicely played, John. Good to see you back.
Many thanks, Richard, much appreciated.
Lovely stuff, just playing along here on the guitar in co. Clare
Thanks. It’s always pleasing to know when someone plays along to a video…playing a different instrument. 👍
Great playing with good tone, John.
Many thanks, Frithjof.
Superbe !
Merci. Ce fut une soirée très agréable ce soir-là.
Beautifully played, good sir! Clean.
Thank you very much. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for commenting.
Great job John, sounds really good. I see you’ve got the Shippey! Sounds really nice, there’s a darkness to the tone I really like, is it a cedar top? 👍
Thanks Tom. Yes, the Shippey has a cedar top…still getting to know the instrument, but loving it !
Sounds very similar to the Lilting Banshee
Well observed…there are some identical bars in each of the tunes…as well as being able to hear this, if you look on thesession.org at the sheet music for each of the tunes (the first option in each tune) you will also be able to view this.
Well played!
Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks very much for commenting.
Is that a Fylde mandolin? Lovely sound
Yes, a Fylde Signature Touchstone…glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for commenting.
Fine tremolo on this beautiful bowl-back! Very enjoyable.
Thank you Frithjof 👍
Beautiful john keep up the good work
That’s very kind. Glad you enjoyed it.
Wonderful. Thank you for the music. Hope you are well!!
Thanks Jerrel. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for commenting. I’m good, hope you are well also.
Delightful, John. Frank is right about the lovely tone you are getting. Great tune too.
Thanks Richard, much appreciated.
Very nice John! You're getting a great vibe from that bowl-back. Giving me a case of MAS.
Thanks very much, Frank…no need to worry, you have some beautiful mandolins!
Oudtar
Thanks for listening. I assume you are referring to a bowl-back guitar (Oudtar).
@@johnwilliamson6846 Yes, I am referring to both the oud and the guitar together; this instrument combines them. Additionally, your playing is wonderful; keep up the great work.
Thanks very much.
