Chasing Steam - Easter long weekend Canberra to Bungendore
4 days of chasing the steam-hauled Picnic Train from Canberra to Bungendore. Enjoy an hour of footage including shunting, footplate footage, drone footage and loco-mounted camera.

Steam locomotive 5917 working hard and wheel-slipping pulling it's train from a standing start up the 1-in-60 grade from Hawkesbury River (Brooklyn) to Long Island, in NSW Australia. This was my favorite moment from a whole weekend chasing the Picnic Train which you can watch in my previous video.

December 5th 2023 I was out and about and saw SSR's Airly train departing Lidsdale. I decided to get a few shots at Cullen Bullen and Capertee. The train is hauled by CEY 002, CEY 004, and CEY 003. Today the Picnic Train (5917 & 42107 top and tail) was running passenger shuttles from Katoomba to Mount Victoria. Starting the day at Lithgow I got shots at ZigZag, Mount Victoria and Medlow Bath. I thought I'd try some new locations today, and filmed the Golden West Rail Tour train at Excelsior where it came through very slowly for some reason. I then drove to Ben Bullen for a second shot where the train had a bit more speed and power on to climb the hill up to Baal Bone Junction. Locomotives today were 4702, 4708 and 4464.

Today I chased another Golden West Rail Tour train on it's journey to Rylstone NSW Australia. This beautiful quiet spot at Kerrabee in the Bylong valley has one of the many passing loops on the Sandy Hollow to Gulgong railway line. An empty train hauled by One Rail locomotives pulls into the passing loop, for the loaded Pacific National train to pass.

In this video I'm chasing the Golden West Rail Tour diesel passenger train on day 4 of it's 5 day journey. I first catch it at Ben Bullen, then Capertee, Clandulla, Kandos and Rylstone. This was a great day out with stormy skies and a friendly crew on the train giving lots of toots and waves.

Loving this!!! My favourite 59 class alive and well, and in one of two places they belong. In this case, the North Coast line. The other was the NSW Central West, particularly working Tumulla or Raglan Banks! 😍😍
It's one of the few lines where road traffic can keep up with the train which is great fun. Not many places I can do a steam chase and see it so many times!

I believe the reason the train stopped at Clandulla was so that it could get clearance into Rylstone as there is no sidings or signals into Rylstone. Also great video!
Yeah that's true, they probably need a new train order/new authority to proceed to the end of the line from there.

Awesome! You picked a great spot. It was probably my favourite shot of the whole weekend. The noise it made coming up through that cutting was excellent, and you could hear it for a few minutes afterwards as well.

Saw you whilst you were out filming this one - you certainly got some nice shots especially on the Gwabegar Line. I used a couple of different spots but wasn't keen to go past Rydal.
Ahh yes! I was surprised to see someone else on that leg of the chase, but you were very helpful. A few times I didn't know if I was in front of the train or behind it but seeing you pull up gave me the answer haha.
Truth be told, I don’t always know myself; sometimes you just have to hope. Brewongle - Locksley is a fairly safe one though; being a Bathurst local I’ve done it a couple of times. Normally Locksley - Tarana Quarry is as well but not with the current bridgework, hence I substituted Rydal for my original plan of Tarana Station. You can put a chase plan on paper and 9/10 times what you get will be a different 😂. I’d been going after the train since Newbridge; 42107 nose-first was a new sight for me so I was keen to milk every sighting I could get from it.

Question, how do you get to the Mount Victoria area where you film?
These shots were from Station St between Mount Victoria and Blackheath. It's a poorly maintained narrow gravel road that I would suggest walking instead of driving if you decide to check it out.

Hey, you have amazing videos. You're very fortunate to be able to do trainspotting in the areas you do. Ever since I saw your Golden West Chase videos, I've gone through your videos and they are amazing. They are so crisp when I play them on my TV. What camera do you use? Keep it up!
Thank you so much! And yes I do have some great local spots for chasing trains. I shoot on a Sony FS5 Mk2, which will look even nicer when I eventually get a proper video tripod so I can do smooth pan/tilt.

My uncle, who started my life long love affair with trains, took me to see a C class loco in action not long after they were introduced in the late 70s. It's amazing to think I'm now older than he was in 77/78 and the Cs are still going strong.
This is train no. CA15? I believe. These do Daily Coal runs on the same locomotives with the three leading CEYs and the streamliner duo Space Ghost and Casper in the back. Other than that nice video!!
