The rare treasures of music that Mashkoor Ali Khan Saheb holds should be valued by rewarding him with the highest honors by the government, such as at least Padma Vibhushan. Otherwise the Guru-shishya Parampara is a scam in which the disciples use sweet words of empty devotion to get hold of the musical heritage from great Ustads of music gharanas. Sufficient fees is hardly ever offered by these pupils to justify what they get in return from these gharana musicians. I have also to add that I personally dislike Zoom as a device for music. Not only does the quality of sound suffer badly, as can be seen here, but all participants want to have their input at some point, and the structure of the presentation becomes disarrayed as a result. In this particular presentation, the Ustad should have been interviewed in a studio with a tablist and tanpuras. Then whatever the Ustad sang would demonstrate the intricacies of the ragas and bandishes he was touching upon. The interviewer should take care to put questions very briefly, and not wander about with lots of unnecessary words. Mashkoor Ali Khan Sahib deserves proper studio-based interviews. He is a treasure. Listen to his AIR recording of Yaman of many years ago, and also his Jugalbandi with his younger brother Mubarak Ali Khan. The sound quality in the latter was not great but the drut tankari of the brothers was out of this world. Many good wishes and salams to him from me.
