      The 1931 census records were lost in bombing during WW2, so most people use the 1939 England and Wales Register. There was no census taken in 1941 for obvious reasons. So, the next census to released will be the 1951 census in 2051. Hope that helps.

    Some learning can be done "on the fly". Other learning needs explicit acknowledgement, IMHO. eg consciously set a task, and allow a chunk of time, to become familiar with how repository's catalogue is structured. I'm trying to build a learning task and time into the inception stage of a project, to ameliorate frustration at slow progress. Also, I must learn and train myself in good Back-up practice, to prevent another disaster with MS OneDrive.

    Years ago I transcribed meticulously a manuscript farm lease from 1780. Then found it was a standard template used by the Manor landlord for a generation, applied to dozens of tenants, listed in the Rent Roll and relatable to later Censuses. A lease was typically for two or three lives - eg the adult farmer and his young son; and was renewed provided that rent continued to be paid by any named person. Each parcel of land was described as "bounded on the North / S / E / W by ..." etc, naming adjacent tenants and landscape features such as streams and townland boundaries. My ancestors married some of those neighbours. Some daughters brought land into their marriage and parcels were combined.Thus transcribing one ~1000 word document enabled me to tabulate and connect many facts, about persons and places over a timeline of decades. Well worth the eyestrain!

    3:40 re Hashtags: cf "Hemingway Bridge" term used by Tiago Forte in 'Building a second brain'. Ernest Hemingway ended a writing session only when he knew what came next in the story: when the next plot point became clear. A 'bridging note' like this fuels tomorrow's session with today's momentum. Hence: in our Family History Plan & Log, such a 'Task Note' or Hashtag serves as the catalyst for a productive start in the subsequent session.

    Always enjoy seeing Brad's choice of shirts! Appreciate that DNA journey doesn't just go for the bling, so many of us have families that lived quiet lives in their times. Encourages me to dig into the everyday stuff of my ancestors lives. Occasional bling is fun, but in the end (when my grandchildren research me....) they will not see high society, huge rebellion but a life lived (hopefully) well and in a way that influences future generations.

    Which test can be done completely anonymously?

    • @familytreeplus
      @familytreeplus 6 месяцев назад

      Hi Jim Thanks for your question. There are things that you can do to privatise yourself: 1. Set up an account with an anonymised name for using with your DNA kit. 2. Turn off your DNA matches (AncestryDNA, MyHeritageDNA, 23andMe and FamilyTreeDNA all allow you to turn off your DNA matches). This means that you will still be able to see your ethnicity report, and any health traits (if applicable) but the people with whom you match will not be able to see you, and you will not be able to see them. This will protect your privacy, but it will mean that you cannot look at your DNA matches for clues about your ancestry, if that is what you seek. 3. Do not link your DNA kit to a public linked tree. 4. Once you have completed your DNA investigations you can delete your DNA from the database. (If you wish to have a copy of your raw DNA remember to download it first, before deleting). Remember too, that, once deleted, you would need to buy a new test to get back into the databases of Ancestry and 23andMe in the future, as they do not accept uploads. Anonymity is a hard thing to accomplish with DNA in the usual family history databases, as the aim of family historians is identification, rather than anonymisation. So your DNA matches will be looking to identify you (by a combination of the DNA that you share and their documentary family history research). That said DNA is used my many people with sensitive family situations, many of whom require anonymity and use their DNA for effective ends, while still maintaining their privacy. I hope this helps, but if you need further help, don't hesitate to email me at helen.t@family-tree.co.uk and I will track down a suitable expert to help you. Thanks Helen

    What is the position of people serving a prison sentence who know a DNA test would establish their innocence? Are they obliged to accept a pardon instead of an acquittal and immediate release from prison. If DNA can be used to establish guilt, is it reasonable to permit it to be used to establish innocence?

    IJames VI and Margaret Tudor are my 12th great grandparents through the legitimate line, and James VI/I is my 12th great grandfather through her and two other women, Margaret Drummond and Agnes Stewart through illegitimate though recognized children. James the V is also my 11th great grandfather twice through illegitimate though recognized children by Lady Margaret Erskine and Helen Elizabeth Stewart. There are millions of descendants from the Stewart/Stuart line. Both of these kings made lots of babies and then their descendants did the same.
