Can it hook up to a JACKERY as I am new to this..please explain if possible..
Hi, Yes, that should be possible. You would connect the panel directly to the Jackery without the charge controller. Connect the cable from the solar panel to the cable which has the different jacks on it and then pick the correct socket for your Jackery unit. These powerbanks have an inbuilt charge controller. Just note that some of the have a limit and might not use the full output of the solar panel. What model is your Jackery?
I recommend filling the spin-on with fuel, prior to installing.
Yeah - Will speed things up.
Hey thanks so much for this! I am just getting my head around OpenPlotter and PI for the boat.
Many thanks for your comments - Yeah, its a good platform!
He said just save cmd, just not how to save 😂 ? It doesn't save by default, control S or enter does nothing.
Hi, Is that to the boot config about 6:15 into the video? Your only option is to exit the file and as you do it asks if you want to save, so its Control X (Exit - as shown at the bottom of the screen) and then the next screen asks it you want to save the file. Press Y. If that's not what you mean, can you let me know where in the video this is please?
how do i login to grafana in the first place? the login I created for influx doesn't work and the login for the pi (pi) doesn't work?
Hi, Grafana isn't linked to anything else in terms of authentication so it's default is admin / admin and then it should ask you to change that. If you can't get in then I think this is the way to reset it sudo grafana-cli --homepath “/usr/share/grafana/” admin reset-admin-password newpass Let us know how you get on.
@BoatingwiththeBaileys that worked thanks.
cool LED project. I've got a Bav motorboat and I also took me a while until I found what I liked. I really don't like when they put those strips and they are exposed, so looks like a x-mas tree. so warm-white (3000-3200K) & dimmable and also as high CRI as you can find is really good.
Yeah, completely agree 👍
Great videos on OpenPlotter on RPi! I started with an RPi4, but I dont like the performance so far. Your videos have inspired me to go with an RPi5 and NVME. Do you have any updates or improvements you would recommend now that you've had your system since you published this video? I'm pulling together my parts now and would appreciate any updated info you might have. Thanks for putting these videos together for everyone's benefit!
Hi, Many thanks for your comments on the video. I honestly don’t have any recommendations at the moment. Its without doubt the faster setup I’ve used. The Pi5 and a fast SD card was quicker that my old Pi4 SSD and it runs really well. I know what you mean about the performance, the 4 was better than the 3 but it was never quite where it needed to be. Now its spot on, its responsive with no lag even with several webpages and the chart plotter running. Really pleased with the setup. Also, let us know how you get on, its always great to get feedback on other setups and see what others have done.
Both you, @BoatingwiththeBaileys and @ApresSail videos about SensESP are a big insperation to me -Thank you guys! Does anoyone out there have a solution to have the sensor to be HIGH for x amount of seconds before triggering the water in the bilge? As of now, the 5 seconds is just the interval between sensor reads as far as of my knowledge. Thanks again!
Hi - Sorry i missed your post, i must have missed the alert. Many thanks for your comments on the videos and i also agree that @ApresSail has some great content. Yes, you are correct in that it checks on that sensor every 5 seconds. You could try and add MovingAverage which is what i added to my RPM setup as it was a bit bouncy to start with. Here is an example of that code: ->connect_to(new MovingAverage(2, 1.0,"/Engine RPM/movingAVG")) Try changing that 2, to 5 and i would also update your code to check the sensor every 1 second to make sure it is doing what you want. You will also need to add this to the top of your code: #include "sensesp/transforms/moving_average.h" Its configured under RPM for me here github.com/Boatingwiththebaileys/ESP32-code/blob/main/main.cpp Let me know if you need anything else and also let us know if that works!
@BoatingwiththeBaileys no worries, I solved it with the help from Discord with Debounce. Keep up the good work.
The best type of product that is similar to this is Sikaflex-291 Marine adhesive. I have used that stuff to fix all kinds of things, and it will glue anything with a flexible bond.
Thanks - I need to take another look at it so i'll try next.
Not sure you want to have a fire extinguisher inside your engine compartment - if there is a fire you don’t want to open the engine compartment but rather typically spray into it while closed. In addition you don’t want a pressurized cylinder inside the compartment, especially at the top which would be the hottest in the event of a fire. It’s basically a bomb at that point.
Hi, Thats an automatic engine compartment fire extingusher so i do hope it is up to the job of being ok in a hot environment. It also has a manual deply option which was never connected to the power if you spotted some cables from it. We also have fire extigushers outside of the engine bay which can be used in the way you describe.
clean with mek then use a proper 2 part adhesive the glue from factory is sparse and for a permanent fix use polymarine or similiar
to much work, all you had to do , dissolder the pins, buy the male plug solder a 0.75mm multicore cable then solder the cable to the board , simple job :))),
Yes but then the socket would be hanging out the back of the device. I didn't want to do that.
Can I use a Garmin GPS antenna w/ a Raymarine element MFD? My Raymarine MFD says to not use the engine start battery to power the MFD what type of smallish battery (none group27) can I use? thanks
Hi, you can use any GPS device as long as it's NMEA2000 but you will then need a series of different cables to connect from the Raymarine unit as their SeatalkNG has an extra pin. On the battery question, do you only have one battery onboard? I'm guessing that's something to do with voltage drop when starting the engine.
@@BoatingwiththeBaileys good to know I can use the garmin GPS w/ the Raymarine MFD.the RM actuely has NMEA2K output giving ppl the chance to aviod the seatalk cabling sys. yes I only have the engine start battery. the 12" MFD uses 25 watts on it's own I believe that includes the transducer. not sure if the garmin gps24xd is powered or not. if I do get another 27group battery would it be ok to have a manuel battery AB switch switched to both while running engine to charge both batterys? thanks
The GPS will be powered but it will use so little power that it wont be noticable. Yeah that would be the simplest solution (Battery AB Switch), im still not sure i would go to all that expense just to run the MFD. I think i would try it first and see how things go. I'm guessing you have a voltmeter onboard, just keep a close eye on power usage first.
Thank you, that was very helpful!
Glad it was helpful! - Thanks for your comments.
Thanks Matt, great video. Doesn't the "pathvalue" increment the value, hence the output increments by1 each time. Well it does on my system
Hi, Can you send me an example so that i can import it?

nice video! What are you using to sense the AC Current?
Hi - Thanks, its using a YHDC SCT sesnor and a converted sketch that i did in another video. Seems to be working well so far. How are things with you?
@@BoatingwiththeBaileys That's funny, that's the only one of yours I haven't seen, and I don't know why I skipped it!! I will watch it tonight. I will probably have more questions lol - I think I will add this for my Shore power and inverter power. Things are great with me! Just pulled the boat out for Winter, but lots of jobs to do - Lithium Upgrade, transition to Pi5 (once I get a decent Power supply), Rudder bearings, Diesel system review.... How about you, I saw you moved up North? That looked like it would have been an awesome trip. let me know if you need crew for something like that!! I am crewing on a friends boat from Charleston, SC to Fort Lauderdale, FL - that should be awesome!!
@ApresSail will be interested to see what you do with the lithium, that is on my list but this year with the rigging, the sail and the rest of the move it's burnt through the maintenance fund! Sounds like you have some interesting projects coming up. We are in Wales now, we did half the trip but missed out on that last leg unfortunately. Going to explore this area next year and maybe Ireland and then I think we might move a bit further north. I have been to Charleston but it was a very long time ago. That also sounds like a good trip.

Hi - For the temp sensor or are you asking about something else?
Sorry the RPM diagram at 0:38.
@LumpinLoaf ah, it's linked in the description- this is the site github.com/boatybits/boatymonpy/blob/master/Schematic_BoatMonitorSMD_Sheet_1_20200209152710.png
I just don't understand why some want all that extra drag towing the tender...
In the first part of the video? Laziness, its pain to store it on deck, its pain to keep inflating/deflating it when you want to go ashore in each anchorage so its eaier to just pull it behind the boat. I dont think it does cause that much drag (and we're not in a hurry), the main issue really is if it catches a wave.
Oooh PLEASE PLEASE do a vidoe of your KIP MFD system. Pleaaasseeeee :)
Hi, I've got a few on the channel under the OpenPlotter playlist and some other bits on our website - Here was the last video we did on Kip ruclips.net/video/uDas858rf6Y/видео.html Let me know if you want some specific information.
Hi there, nice video and good to see you got down to Chichester. A good tip in strong E or W winds is to go up in to the Thorney Channel and anchor there or alternatively find a sheltered spot in the Emsworth Channel. In both cases, clear of the fairway. More comfortable than East Head which can feel very exposed as you found out.
Hi, yeah that's really good advice. We did just that in Feb this year, tucked in behind Thorney island and had the whole place to ourselves. It's a lovely part of the world!
You think this would go on plane with two adults 150kg with 6hp ?
4 stroke or 2 stroke outboard? That's a tough one, I'm not sure 6hp is enough
@@BoatingwiththeBaileys 4 stroke
Hi, I think with the additional weight of a 4 stroke engine, its unlikely.
Interesting I thought you were going to do the conversions in signalk but node red works as well.
Hi, thanks for your comments on the videos. Is it possible to convert it in SignalK? Can you let me know how?
@@BoatingwiththeBaileys I wish I could help but sadly I am not a coder.
I love mine. The only thing I find missing is the ability to command my Raymarine Autopilot by transmitting SeaTalk.
Yeah it's a great bit of kit 👍
Do you have any tips on remote monitoring? I'd like to remotely monitor my batteries and my bilge via pi5. I've considered using the "roam" device here in the US.
Hi, it's not something I've done so far. I know there is a plugin for SK to send data to the cloud and that might be an option. Some sort of push notification would be good. I'll take a look as the weather is turning here now
As always thanks for sharing. It's a great advance, but your previous charger seemed to be a good one too, it's rare that it didn't work well. I thought that all the new Víctron smart chargers had the Ve direct port to wire it and link it via USB to cerbo gx or venus os, but it seems that yours have not. Mine is the previous 3 ports version and didn't have it either (but there's a hack to be done to provide it, find it in the the internet, but I didn't do it yet). I'm very happy with my Venus Os in a dedicated 2gb Pi4, it's 100% reliable and easy to install and gives a lot of of info and even some remote control as with the local console . The venus os (in its large version) has signal K and node red and I link to my openplotter installation through signal K,so I get all the info in my network. However venus os cannot get so deep into the devices as the Bluetooth app does, don't understand why. Definitely, Víctron is making a great environment. ❤
Hi, Thanks for the comments. This charger is much more efficient than the last one also silent now, so no annoying fan noise at night when its running. I've also seen the hack to get some sort of VE-direct port/comms out of these chargers but I’m also following a post over on SK Discord channel where Victron has said the BLE data instant readout will be available soon (v3.6 I think) for these chargers. If someone is then able to update the Victron-BLE plugin for SK, we should be able to get most of the data out as we do with the shunts and solar kit.
Thanks for the reply, but the ve port should be per default in new versions, at least with the 3 ports 30 amps chargers. When you mean BLE, do you mean Bluetooth? So no further need of the USB cables? I guess that for venus and settings through the remote console would still be needed. I don't understand why they don't implement all settings available in Bluetooth Víctron app into Venus Os
@bybeka1 I'm also not sure why they don't have the port. Yes BLE - Bluetooth, I now connect to all my Victron kit via Bluetooth via SignalK. I used to use the VeDirect to the shunt but not now.
@@BoatingwiththeBaileys great, so You can save money in cables, which are not cheap!
Great tutorial thanks!
Thanks for your comments
I've been looking in to using OpenPlotter and all of the software stuff that comes with it, including Node Red, to use it on my own sailboat. The learning curve got too steep for me, though. Interesting to see how you're doing it though, so thanks for showing us!
If you need some help, let us know either on here or via our website. The best tip I can give you is just start with part of it and build it up. Once you get going, it's easier to add to it. I've been wanting to use Node-red for a while, years in fact but just had other things to do first.
@@BoatingwiththeBaileys Much appreciated, but I think it will have to wait until I feel I have the left over capacity to start messing around with it again. I kind of hit a wall, rather than an actual learning curve it seems. And now I have an engine bay to tidy up, a sail drive and a Penta 2003 to prep before anything else so... yeah. But thank you for the offer, and once I get the stuck bits of keyboard out of my forehead after banging the two against each other one too many times, I hope I can take you up on the offer 😜
@AlfOfAllTrades 😀👍
Hi , thanks for all you video. MacArthur hat did simplified all my project. just to mention, the use of openplotter hotspot was not so good. now I have a wifi router on board, rpi wired to it with fixed address ( same as openplotter hotspot it shoud have work with DHCP but often a mess) . so with ip fixed fas 192.168.1.4 navionics get the data on 192.168.1.4 port 10110 just perfect. and of course when the on board router has internet access, every devices on board can also access internet
Great. Thanks
Glad you liked the video. Thanks for your comment
But if i connect it to my van's battery and leave it there while I'm working 8 hours, it's not gonna spend all my battery's energy? 🤔 I just got my first van and I'm terrible about cables batteries and stuff 😅
Hi, no it won't do that. It uses so little power you won't even know it's connected. It also drops down further when it detects no movement. As soon as you start your van it would be charged back up in minutes.
@@BoatingwiththeBaileys thank you so much, finally someone explained simply! 😅
Hi great vid. Decided on the back of your video to go down the RPi5 and base nvme route. ...however my config was nothing like as straight forward and as of V4( 19June touchscreen image) I still have no working shutdown/ poweroff and have had to stop in case it accidentally finds itself heading out of a porthole and into the drink (and revert back to my 4b headless predecessor
Ahh that's a shame. What problems are you having on shutdown/power off?
I'm just now working with getting my open plotter working on my houseboat and having struggles figuring out how to get an esp32 in the engine bilge to report back to my raspberry pi running open plotter with engine temperatures, bilge temperatures and pressure. Can you point me to some help on getting the ESP 32 connected via Wi-Fi to the raspberry pi so I can bring that data into open plotter? Thanks!
Hi, yeah sure. Can I asked what Pi and OpenPlotter version you are running?
Your content and experiences are very interesting, congratulations. I wanted to point out that if I'm not mistaken in the video a view of the Navionics map is shown from a PC from where you were able to plan the cruise as you can do from the mobile application. Since I also have a current subscription, I tried to connect to the web with my PC but failing to do so, I contacted Garmin support who let me know that the service is no longer available from a PC. Can you tell me if this is the case for you too? Thanks
Hi, Many thanks for your comments on the videos. Yeah, im also struggling with this now. It seemed to be down for a few days and then came back with the Garmin branding. Since then, i can't zoom in correctly and can only partially see charts at different zoom levels. A real shame as it was a great planning resource. Hopefully they will have a think about that and bring it back.
Quick question, do you get a menu on the left that says 'Whats on your boat?' Try changing that from Another Brand to Garmin? Does it now work?
Thanks for the video. I am facing doing a restore of an older feathering prop. I was nervous about sanding. I guess with fine grit papers it will not throw off the blade balance. After all, branacles and such don't do it. First time I am doing this so a tutorial is welcome. And, hello from some Bailey's on the other side of the "pond".
Hello 👋 many thanks for your comments. Yeah, I was a little nervous about doing this so I started with fine grit wet and then realised I could use a slightly more aggressive paper and not do any damage. I took my time and didn't apply a lot of pressure and it came up really well. I'll be lifting the boat shortly so it will be interesting to see how that looks after a year in the water. Best of luck with your project and if you have any hints & tips after your restore lets us know 👍⛵️
I'm very disappointed in the installation instructions .I have to buy a transducer and cable which I feel for this amount of money should been included!! so I would never buy this ever again but now I'm stuck with it
They are expensive items that's very true. Do you not currently have a depth sounder onboard?
What do you do about missing widgets?
Hi, in terms of changing the layout?
@@BoatingwiththeBaileys No. Like i can not add data for tanks and shunts. They are available in the data dop down. Seems like some widgets ae missing. i can see date in date explorer.
Can you add them just using the number widget and get a value?
That was excellent and particularly well paced views of a port I would never actually see. Thank you.
Many thanks for your comments 👍⛵️
Can you recommend any other local walks that we should take a look at? Let us know in the comments
Tom Cunliffe did this video on navigating Portland Bill. ruclips.net/video/pC15-GNL6gY/видео.htmlsi=o6CU6afMLmFMEIrF Mentions the fish n chips!
do you have a way to connect 0183 from a Yaychevice over Wi-Fi?
Hi, you should be able to create a connection between OpenPlotter/SignalK to your WiFi device and listen to the data. This guide should help openplotter.readthedocs.io/latest/signalk/multiplexing.html
At the start you mention "a full blown chart plotter"; in what way is the open plotter system as a whole that you're looking at here, short of that?
Hi, well it tracks my route, I can plot a course, I can send that route to an autopilot. It can show charts for anywhere in the world, it can multiplex different data types and convert them from one type to another, it can help with system migrations, it can show AIS data... having used it for the last 3 years it has more features and options than my Axiom does, the hardest part is making it waterproof.
@@BoatingwiththeBaileys So what you're saying is that its more than a full blown CP ( btw lovely recent vid to QAB .. nr my base!)
Yeah it can be, but just build it bit by bit and make sure like with everything else you have a backup, that's why I still run both this and an axiom. Some of the later videos will show the integrations it can do if you have come across them yet. QAB was nice. The bays were great to explore!
@@BoatingwiththeBaileys Thanks.. been using an old version of rpi/ o-cpn for a few years, but now considering upgrades inc later rpi /rewiring/ signal k / node red etc . Your vids are most interesting & inspiring me to get on with it!
@MJ-iv1es yeah, do it. Pi5 and OpenPlotter 4 is a great combo
Will the plastic bit be strong enough to get off barnacles?
Hi - Yeah it is strong enough to remove most of them. Just make sure whenever you do use it, you start with that side, even if you think the boat is clean. Anything sharp does give the sponge bit a hard time.
Do it once and do it properly thats wS a big wast of time and money my friend
Maybe so but for £10 I wanted to see if the claim of it will stick to anything even when it's wet was true... it's not
I know your're busy! I got a couple main.cpp questions about the Dallas temperature sensor section. Please respond only when you have time. You have two declared DallasTemperatureSensors* dts = new DallasTemperatureSensors(pin) statements in your code (17, 16). Does that code compile cleanly? I built two boards to connect five DS18B20 sensors to each board, for testing purposes. Each sensor connection has a 4.7 ohm resistor, as they should. All sensors connected run through one data line from the board to one data pin on the ESP32. I use uint8_t pin = 15 statement with all data running to GPIO15. I've had 5 sensors working but not consistently. Only two read consistently. Can you tell me issues you had in testing your sensors and code? If I can only get two sensors running on one board, I may have to add two Esp32 boards in my engine compartment. Have you ever used two esp32 boards with SignalK? Thank you in advance for your response. And, thank you for your patience.
Hi, Sorry i did reply but lost internet and it looks like it didn't post. Yeah, that code has complied ok and it should work. Just check the pin layout and the number of pins you have to use and you should be ok. If you want to drop us an email from our website, i'm happy to take a look at your code. You can share a picture then also and we can try and get to the bottom of it. Its also good to add one sensor at a time, even if you have added more in your code, it just work through them then 1 by 1.
Hello nice new build have you experimented with different IMU placement in the boat, big mfg like B&G want it on a bulkhead near the mast, where is your IMU located?
Hi, when you say IMU are you refering to the sensor messuring pitch and roll etc?, mine isn't central at all, its mounted on the port side. If im honest, i dont really use it, its on the list to do something with but i've just not got to it yet.
@@BoatingwiththeBaileysi am trying to figure out if I even need the IMU for compass heading in open plotter, my GPS seems to know where I am headed
Hi, Yeah it will be able to get that information from your GPS. I found that sometimes when stopped, i dont get any heading information but you do if you have either a compas on your network or an IMU. Otherwise its needed for Pypilot and/or pitch/roll information.
Just wondering why is Home Assistant not a natural choice for such dashboards? It has all the flexibility and support of a vast community, plus it can be integrated with SignalK/Grafana easily.
Hi, Its a good question but I haven't yet seen a compass/wind wiget with the same level of detail as the one in KIP, thats now able to show bearing to waypoint and i think tidal data is next on the list as an example. Its the same with all this software, you want to borrow the best bits from each system. KIP is also incredibly efficent on the CPU when compaired to Grafana, i did some live data testing and it won hands down. I personally still think that OpenPlotter is the best of sailing/boating opensource software.
@@BoatingwiththeBaileys I saw that KIP widget and it's impressive. It's a pity they decided to write a new software from scratch, though, considering HA is such a good platform for it already - especially considering it has support for so many other widgets one would want to also display, aside of the compass/widget.
@wrobelda genuine question- what do you think it's missing? What haven't you been able to display that you've wanted to?
@@BoatingwiththeBaileys I haven’t used it yet, actually, but am a software engineer very familiar with Home Assistant and it’s an obvious choice for me for such use cases. HA is a mature, very stable project, so I’d rather use that than something that is relatively new. Mind that HA has tons of integrations already, for example Victron is very well integrated. There are sailors who use HA already for that purpose and who contribute widgets specifically designed for that use case - Google Smart Boat Innovations for example, who also have their own YT channel. In another example, you’re somewhat hacky use of ESP32 for water sensors is imho much riskier solution than using off the shelf, water resistant, reliable, cheap Zigbee sensors, which can be easily integrated into HA and which easily be multiplicated to provide the needed redundancy in such a crucial role. A lot of the stuff has already been polished to perfection in home automation realm and reinventing the wheel seems like wasted effort to me. Also, seeing your struggles with C++ ESP32 and alert messages, while ESPHome exists, makes me think that there’s whole new world for you to explore, one that is equally as rewarding but more reliable/predictable and with immense community support. I encourage you to look up sample HA dashboards to realize what kind of potential we’re talking here. Note that SignalK is still used in this scenario for NMEA, you just do most of the automation integration in Home Assistant and use its dashboard. It does come installed in Open Marine distribution, too, as far as I know. And to answer your actual question: one thing I would definitely want in that dashboard would be the camera views.
@@BoatingwiththeBaileys Looks like my elaborate comment war removed, or I don't see it. In any case, I recommend checking out "Smart Boat Innovations", both the website and their YT channel, as they use HA for dashboard. I also mentioned that I think you'd be better off using regular, off-the shelf Zigbee water sensors, are they are more reliable, cheap and wireless/waterproof, instead of hacked sensors attached to ESP32. And even if you insist on ESP32, the SensESP still comes off as repetitive effort, considering that ESPHome is such a mature platform that seems perfect for the use cases, and way easier to use. SignalK is still good software for interfacing NMEA, but I would leave all the automation and dashboarding to HA, which can interface with SignalK. And one thing I would definitely want on my dashboard is camera views. See the Smart Boat Innovation for their examples.
