If you want to know the real history of this song (rather than simply its use in a Hollywood film), look up its writer, Ewan MacColl, and the BBC radio ballad "Singing the fishing" (broadcast in 1960) that he wrote the song for. There's loads of other songs and stories in the Radio Ballad. The most interesting thing about the song is that MacColl wrote it using words and phrases in interviews with an old Norfolk fisherman called Sam Larner. I'm always pleased to dig in the music histories, notably the rare ones, so this is very instructive ! I for example like the fact that it's Dave Van Ronk who helped Bob Dylan a great deal to start into music, but History only remembered Dylan in the end. Just watched Tom Waits at Letterman 2015-05-14 performing this song first time and while listening it I wondered how so that so often Tom's songs cover sound so good. It's (maybe) because Tom's singing style and his deep, gravelly voice for non-English listeners like myself seems to overshadow underlying melody. I heard underlying chords progression and decided to search for cover of this song too. First few search results hadn't much views, so i just randomly picked your version. I found exactly what I was searching for. This version is very good and I enjoy very much listening it.
Thanks for the kind words. I've heard the exact same thing in Waits version as you did : something underneath the rocks of the voice, something very sweet and warmth, deeply human. I can also recommend the cover by David Maloney which is very nice as well, a grandpa on his porch, quite pure, it's very different from the original yet very good. Let's hope Waits lives a lot more years on this earth !
