Welcome back to Cloninger’s Garage. This video will be about my first attempt at a simple Painless Load Development process. I would rather be shooting than reloading thus this effort to simplify the process. In most cases you don’t need to go through complicated load development processes like ladder tests, .1 grain incremental group testing, testing multiple powders, testing different primers...

These Ruger M77 rifles have to be glass bedded in order to improve their accuracy. Otherwise, the groups are somewhat poor.
Somethings wrong that’s terrible. Acts like the throat has been shot out of it. Something is loose or it’s shot out. At 100 yards they should be in the orange. That little gun should be getting 1/2 inch groups.
You are probably right!! It has had many rounds shot through it over the years and some have reported that these ultralight barrels were of questionable quality. Scope and mounts are tight and good. Barrel is bad, but I keep it for sentimental reasons. Thanks for commenting!
Play around with this powder at some lighter bullet weights, it never shines in the 70+ grain weight for me, however 69 and lighter down to 50s were high velocities, no pressure signs and sub Moa
yeah buddy, plz do a video on 38 speshull
I have a video on 38 special with Unique, anything in particluar you are looking for? If so I will see if I can put together a video for you.
The 357 is the round but factory loads do not have the power of the original loadings. And a heavy duty revolver you can really get some hot loads I've loaded a 125 grain to 1800 ft per second in the cast of Lyman bullet I believe it's 358 156 with a gas check up to 1500 ft per second. Then I would use the old Hollow pointer on them and they would expand better than jacketed bullets. I love the 357.
Great video
Thanks!!
A fellow Arkie!
Woo Pig Sooie!!
I knew an old rancher who used a Savage Model 99 in 250-3000 shooting 100 grain Partitions to hunt pronghorn. His rifle wore a simple but reliable Leupold 4x38. When he hunted pronghorn he would setup near a dirt tank and would kill a buck almost every year. His shots were almost never over 200 yards since he had the patience of Job. I asked him why he didn’t use his 270 and he replied, This rifle has a classy look and I love the thought of using a cartridge that is simple and gets the job done. I thought, Well, that covers that!
Yes that about covers it!! Nostalgia and sentimental value is why I keep this one around.
you should practice more! Terrible shooting
What's your barrel's twist rate?
1:8
I see we're shooting Uncle Bubba's pissin' hot reloads. You are waaaaaaay beyond max pressure.
Yes those charges of 26.5g and the one shot at 27g did show pressure signs. As stated in the description, the velocities in the video are bad chronograph readings. The actual true velocities are in normal range. The max listed on Hodgdon website is 26.2. 🙂
Recoil is harsh in 308 do to the weight
I have since threaded the barrel and suppressed tame down the recoil sweet now
Now it is suppressed not as much recoils felt!
WW296 is a good powder for 357 as well.
Yes it is; being that they are the same powders!! (just different branding)🙂
If you want a 25-06, just get one. Running those pressures, disclaimers aside, is irresponsible. If you're going to do this kind of thing, keep it to yourself.
To each his own. Modern bolt action rifles in 250 Savage can easily be loaded above book max (45,000 cup) without pressure signs. As stated before, the saami pressure was set at 45,000 CUP or 50318 psi when it came out in 1915, due to the 250 Savage cartridge being used in lever actions. Modern bolt guns can easily handle 62,000 psi; thus resulting in higher muzzle velocities. Thus the experiment was a success. Thank you for watching and commenting!!
@CloningersGarage Sorry to disagree. It is irresponsible to advocate exceeding industry pressure standards. Your disclaimer will not protect you if someone chooses to act on what you're doing. You're demonstrating exceeding known safety standards. You have not shown any pressure testing apparatus and therefore have no idea what your pressures actually are. There are too many variables in ballistics to just cross your fingers and hope for the best. And c.u.p./ l.u.p. and psi do not have direct conversion standards. Ie, 45000 cup in the .250 Savage and in the 7x57 are not equivalent, and do not convert to psi. You can do what you want with your rifles. Finger, eyes, etc. But putting it out there for less experienced folk is asking for a lawsuit. Just because one can, it doesn't automatically follow that one should. I'm not trying to pick a fight. Just trying to spare some real trouble. Consult legal counsel if you doubt what I'm saying. Cheap insurance.
@@marksellers4875 Fair enough!! I hope you will look at some of my other content as well. Thank you for watching and commenting!!
@@CloningersGarage Thanks for considering my imput. Much appreciated
Wow!... is that all the same cases?.... i would try AA2520😮😮
Yes, same cases. Thanks for the recommendation. I will try to do my net videos using AA2520.
Have you tried starting lower in the grains? 22.5 is starting with cfe223. Maybe you’re pushing the heavy pills to fast , and the node is lower in the fps.
Looking at your results I'm thinking your too hot on your loads, typical for erratic groups, those velocities are about in the 65 gr. bullets. Maybe try dropping a couple of grains and accuracy will be better.
those velocities are inaccurate as stated in the description, but they are probably still hot loads
More than likely you have too slow a twist rate in your barrel .
twist is 1:8
Lol my man that is literally the hottest load I have ever seen anyone load as 5.56, because you're way out of the realm of .223 1728 foot pounds of energy is like 300 above the spiciest of spicy loads.
as stated in the description these velocities are incorrect, but they are still hot loads
@CloningersGarage ok that makes more sense, because I can't really imagine how you get 20% extra power when the max loads for 5.56 are at or near 100% case capacity already and thats a long bullet.
I normally find that the factory seconds are.....sometimes accurate lol. I mean they are seconds so that means something is wrong with them. Normally with factory seconds with poly tips, it's the tip that's wonky. Shooting these at hot loads will never make them accurate, you will have to lower the speed a bit to make them seconds poly tip bullets accurate. I have factory seconds 77gr bthp and 88gr eld. Used the 77gr in my 16inch AR-15 and I can do 1 inch groups at 100 when I lower my velocities a bit. I use the 88gr in my 22arc and I find it more accurate with lower velocities also. I'm using vithavouri n140 powder in both calibers
somethings wrong with your rifle. NO Tikka shoots that bad with the worst of loads
That’s what I was thinking
Rifle is great! It could be me shooting bad or it simple doesn't like CFE223. Check out the groups from my AA2495 video. CFE223 works great in my Gas Guns.
At my age my dog distracting me would be a double load for sure. Thx.
Yes, I definitely had to double check before resuming!!
I can't believe he is getting those crummy grps. I tried the same exact loads from my Ruger RSI in same cal. 75 gr Sierra HPs. 35grs Of IMR 3031 I got 1/2" grp. At 100 yds. And 5/8" grp at 200 yds. He must be doing something wrong or has a lemon rifle barrel.
Why did you load the first 5 with only 34 grains?
I look at several different reloading manuals. Hodgdon has the max load with IMR 3031 as 34g, so I started with that load. The max pressure by SAAMI is 45,000 cup. I know that is low per modern standards but that is what the specs are for a cartridge developed in 1915 for the Savage Model 99 lever action. I started at this load with the intention of trying to reach pressures that are possible in modern bolt action rifles. I hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
What is your barrel twist rate?
1:8 Twist on this Tikka T3x; Great rifle!!
Varget works great with that bullet and Winchester primers in my 1 to 9 twist Savage .223's. .5 moa. Haven't tried CFE223
I’m running the same twist rate on a gas gun and CFE .223 performed way better sub MOA @100 yards, projectile was sierra match king 77 grain
Try it, you'll love it
What was the COL on those? Love the video btw.
I don't have any to check right now, but I believe that for the Blue Bullets it was 1.625" when seated to the crimp groove. I am not sure on the red Bayou Bullets. I believe the norm is 1.59", though I have seated some 160g LSWCHP to I believe 1.66" which still fit in my Smith 686. That may be too long for some cylinders. I like how the 158g Blue Bullets shoot in both the .357 mag and the .38 Special.
@@CloningersGarage Thanks for the reply! I ordered some Blue bullets and I was just curious where you had your COL at. I'm looking forward to working up a load for my little revolver!
Some people don’t like CFE223 but I love that powder. I can get great velocity and accuracy with it. The 73g ELDM with cfe 223 was 0.3 inch groups for me all day long.
I have gotten better groups with CFE223 out of this rifle in testing after this video was done. CFE223 seems to also do very well in my AR's.
Cfe223 is a potential GOAT powder lol. I can't believe anyone would dismiss it or not like It. Also I'm 308 it cooks with great accuracy
The felt recoil is because of the synthetic stock. If you use Devcon on the fore end to stiffen it up and put a little bit of weight. Fill the stock with silicone rubber to help in recoil management. It also makes the rifle shoot much more accurately.
Good info!! Thanks!!
Worth mentioning is that H110 and W296 are the same powder so 100% interchangeable
Yes!! this is good to mention!! Thanks!!🙂
@@CloningersGarage I had a nice SS 686….6” barrel…. I regret selling it!
A few years back Smith and Wesson built some .357 mag. revolvers that would not stand up to the maximum pressure as stated by SAAMI in loading manuals. They were able to get SAAMI to lower the maximum pressure in loading manuals. When loading for newer revolvers you will need to make sure you use a newer reloading manual. There is a difference in maximum powder charge in all my older manuals than there is in my newer books. It may only be a problem with newer S&M revolvers I don't know. Just be aware.
Yes!! Always refer to as many sources as possible; start low and work your way up!! Not all revolvers can take the same pressures.
That load gets me 1750fts with XTP from a 20' Winchester 94. very accurate too.
I'm sure it 5.56 pressures!
Nice range you are truly blessed.Mount a patio table umbrella in the bench and you could shoot all day..
Great Idea!!
What pressure do you think it's hitting?
Wow!! What a difference..
I dont blame you at all..The larger 30 cals are for the youngins..But, may I suggest, wearing a PAST recoil shield..It does wonders for your shoulder and state of mind..Wear it under your shirt..
Hornady is selling 75 grainers @ 2790..You can do it..🎉..Do you plan on trying this same test with different bullets?
I will be doing some more tests with Hornady 73g eldm and Sierra 77 tmk; and also other powders as well!!
Recently purchased some H110 for loading .357. Tried using 16 grains to push some Missouri bullet co 158 grain SWC. Pretty decent accuracy and felt some nice recoil. Trying to keep it a tad light since I use a SW 65-2 which is over 40 years old. Thanks for the video.
Nice, 16g is still stout. Enjoy!!
nice information ive been looking for. tell me did you start with standard primers or go straight to magnum primers? thank you bro.
H110 requires magnum primers!! 🙂
You need to change bullets. Never had good luck with hot cor speer in my ruler RSI International. Best load was 36 gr 3031 , 75gr. Sierra hp. We'll prepared cases,Win. primers. 1/2" grps at 100 yds and 3/4" at 200 yds. And that's no BS. Out of an 18 1/2" barrel. It's all in the components being assembled. Search for what your rifle likes and stress on case preparation
Very true, I use different components for my other rifles and there is definitely a difference.
My 99 loves, loves, 87gr Speer Hot Cor’s over 37 grains of IMR 4064, running 3050 fps. Accurate 💯
But Mr HappyFunGuy, isn’t that 2 grains over Speer’s listing? Yes it is concerned reader, both my primer, case, and self will tell you it’s no problem at all!
Was the first shot no ear pro 😂. Thanks for continuing the video afterwards haha
Yes! Sometimes I forget, but only for one shot!! 😂
Would you be interested in selling the Ruger?
No, it has sentimental value.
Just bought me one of those Little Dandy powder loaders ; didn’t realize i also had to get rotors for it. do you recommend this product? Thanks for the video have fun plinking
Yes the Little Dandy is a great way to load powder quickly. Do some research to find out which rotor you need for your preferred powder and charge weight. www.rcbs.com/on/demandware.static/-/Library-Sites-RCBSSharedLibrary/default/dw2308a13f/productPdfFiles/rcbsPdf/LittleDandyChart.pdf
Have had mine for 2+ decades. I've used it hand-held, mounted in a stand and in a turret. They are great! I have 25 rotors, stored in an MTM 12 ga plastic ammo box. Mounted in a stand is when they are at their best.
You’ll need to replace AK pin retainer because “ paper clip” 👎🏻
If I still had it I would look into this, thanks for the comment!
@@CloningersGarageissues with it?
@@Grizzlyman420 I never had any issues with it. It always ran great and was quite accurate as well.
@@CloningersGarage nice! I snagged the GF5 figured what the hell. Mixed reviews on em so I wanted to see for myself. 400 rounds straight out of the box no issues but I really don’t think these are 30-40k round aks and even that really isn’t much
I need to replace my front sight on my 686+. I was thinking about putting a vortex red dot on it, but idk if i want to do that or not. It is a few screws, easily restore it back to iron sights. Idk if i want a red dot or not on mine
I don't know about that. I have red dots on my pistols, but I have not ever thought about putting a red on my revolvers. If you do let me know how it works out!!
I have 250 model 99h. My question is how rare are they?
I do not know how rare they are, but I do believe the 250 Savage was designed t fit in the Model 99.
Not super rare but seem to fetch a grand or better
@TheREALLibertyOrDeath I payed 675 for it. It has a barrel band. I found out they made them in 1940-1942
@@mikebrown1188 oh nice, is that the carbine? Those might be of lower production numbers. Pre war is good, that mean Utica ny factory
@@TheREALLibertyOrDeath yes but not the tear down. I plant hunting with it. I hunt in SW WI
I have same rifle, best groups are always with 87 Sierra's & IMR 4895 although some success with 75 Hornady's & Varget, fairly consistent 1-1/2" groups with lower powered hunting scopes is what I consider excellent results. I have never achieved really good results with anything heavier. That also applies to my Sav's too. Your results shooting also indicate 5 shot groups are too much for that pencil barrel, it throwing last shot virtually every time, 3 shot is way to go. IMHO anyway!
42.00 for that H110. LOT OF$$$.
Yes!! Prices are definitely going up!!
Not anymore it isn't~
The 250 savage is inherently accurate. I would check bedding on gun and loose scope setup.
That's what everyone tells me. The bedding is fine and the scope is not loose. It appears that the barrels on some of these old Ruger M77 Ultralight rifles are not very good. I am just going to knock this up to a poor barrel and move on. Maybe I will replace the barrel in the future. It still works okay within 100 yds, which is all I ever used it for; many years ago. If I want something for longer range I will use one of my other rifles. Thank you for commenting and please come back for more content in the future!! 🙂
@CloningersGarage I had a M77 in 280 remington. No matter what I did , it wouldn't shoot well. Good enough for Woods hunting but not accurate enough for long range. I sold it and bought a Remington mountain rifle in 280 . This was when they first came out. It's a tack driver even with the light barrel.
