Better Waste Management Through Measurement
Recent research shows that paper and cardboard recycling rates are significantly lower than previously reported. Bottom-up measurement of waste disposed of in landfills shows over 100 MILLION tons MORE waste is generated than is reported by the US EPA. "You can't manage what you don't measure."

SWEEP Webinar | A Walk-through the SWEEP Standard
Much, much respect to Heidi! When you focus on individual products, however, you will always be chasing industry and be behind. Producers might create a recycling program, then just starve it of resources and it does nothing. As the last 50 years have shown us, recycling is not the answer. My feeling is that we should aim to mandate a reverse supply chain (producers > DCs > retailers > consumers > retailers > DCs > producers, subject to audits) and gradually increase the landfill fees for both consumers and companies. We tax the non-compliant entities (small fees at first, increasing it over time) and use that pool of money to pass it along to those who are doing it well. When consumers are facing increasing fees based on landfill usage, they will be more conscious about what they buy, so companies will face pressure from their customers as well. Using economic levers, over time, the entire economy will move to re-usables and you won't be chasing in perpetuity. I hope these thoughts add constructively to the work you are doing! Thank you!

I like the heat map along the walking path in the app. If they can get AI to recognize and categorize objects, it would be amazing if then a drone could be utilized to cover a large area or a long path.
