This solo is such a killer example of how thoughtful and melodic John’s pre-Rudess playing was. Great job btw…you nailed the feel and nuance which is something that many covers gloss over in the name of simply “playing the right notes”
Wtf is pre rudess supposed to mean, his solos are always amazing, sure he sometimes likes just shredding (even on dream and images) but its always intricate and thoughtful. And tbh IMO he has only improved his playing since 1999

@@dedalomusic Dude, you can’t POSSIBLY compare petrucci’s earlier work to his later work in that regard. Every…single….solo from images and words to scenes from a memory (excluding that goofy, chromatic break in beyond this life) was thoughtful, composed, melodious and harmonically interesting. He’s done some great stuff post-Rudess, sure…but there’s also been the shredding arms race and jacked Jesus Petrucci that’s farrrrr more pronounced. How is this even a debate? Have you guys never listened to FII or Awake?

What stings and gage are you using? Sounds amazing!
This is a very typical Petrucci solo. It almost sounds cliche to me. One of my all-time favorite solos of his is the one that follows this movement in The Darkest of Winters. That has a more unique mood and emotion that you really don't hear often. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with your playing, and I applaud choosing from the often forgotten Change of Seasons EP, I just would have mad a different choice.
