Catradora, in pre season 1 and season 1-4, has all sorts of issues, but I think people don't realize it is the amount of faith they have in each other. Adora always held a special place in Catra's heart, which probably kept her from killing her. Adora's friend was hurting, and it killed her that she couldn't help. Also, the Corrupted!She-Ra shows that Adora really could have killed Catra at nearly any point. Catra is a teenager who had never gotten unconditional validation or love from anyone besides Adora and vice versa. Catra has been shown throughout the show to not be cruel like SW and shows compassion. The problem is that it always seems to backfire either from others or her own self-destructive belief in the world. Catra throughout struggles with her tramua response and her genuine care of those who give her validation. The reason Super Pal trio breaks is Entrapta cares about only about tech in S1-3 makes her complete ignorant to Catra and Scropia. Scropia is negligent to Catra desire for boundaries with herself, and each regression within Catra disrespects Scropia, which will eventually push Scropia out. The reason Catradora works is that we see that they need each other, and just because Catra couldn't see the light in the world doesn't mean she should be doomed to darkness. Post Save the Cat Catra is more mad that her act of self-scarifice is taken away. It feels like it was worthless and removes her individuality, which is what she has been forced into an unhealthy need for. Once Adora gives her the option to leave, which is given from Adora care towards Catra realizes she can't do it. She can't go back to the hurt, depressed and self-destructive person she was, she has wanted out for the first 21 years of her life and she can't go back. Catra realized that the world had good in it thanks to Glimmer, then Bow, Adora, and Entrapta, and lastly, the alliance. I think a great indicator of Catra change is Perfuma. Perfuma at first attacks Catra, when she opens the conversation in a BFS and Adora way. After Catra recognizes the need for a friend like Perfuma, Perfuma put her wisdom and faith into Catra. I really wish we got an episode where Perfuma rejects SW, she sees the lack of a good person and desire to change in SW.

Yup, there's a ton of people who have been abused who get trapped in the cycle and end up harming others as a result. Adora is the one who escaped the cycle first, and had the strength to leap into the unknown Catra did not have that strength and was stuck in her anger and attempts to prove to others she wasn't trash, wasn't useless and deserved to live

And that’s part of what makes her such a great character. Her redemption arc was a bit rushed and was a little too late yes. But she is probably the single best written example of how severe mental illness can be a prison in your own mind, how they can make you push away everyone you love and care about and can turn into a self perpetuating destructive cycle.

Unfortunately it’s often not that simple, when your own mind is a prison it’s really hard to convince yourself that you are capable of being loved, and that people don’t just hate you and want to abuse you… Catra is one of the single best written examples of a character who suffers extreme trauma and a multitude of severe mental health conditions such as BPD, depression and suicidal tendencies.

Also so that Adora doesn't kill herself for others. Catra realizes the need for self-care but rejects it till season 5 as either something wrong with her that makes her undeserving to exist and something the world would take advantage of. During season 5 we see Catra see that fact Adora isn't taking care of herself either and it breaks her heart that her girl that is saving the world again and again doesn't think she deserves to just live/exist.
