It almost ended before it started, with the crash of their first-speed yacht record attempt, the disaster that broke the short-lived Wood Duck. The Iron Duck tells the story of how Bob Dill and Bob Schumacher went on to build and sail the fastest wind-powered vehicle in the world.
In 1999, they shattered the 100 mph mark and secured a place in the record books that held for ten years to the day. The wind-powered world speed record was an obsession of Dill's, who thought he could break it with the initiative engineering ideas he had to build the I...

Heidi Duckler Dance - LAKE ENCHANTO
Просмотров 1594 года назад
Lake Enchanto the location of a 1930 fairyland resort in the Malibu hills where a Kim West installation and the Heidi Duckler Dance theatre perform a one-time throwback performance to that distant time. As the sun dips below the trees at Peter Strauss Ranch, shadows elongate. When vintage bathing suit-clad dancers propel through the space, for a moment it ceases to be 2017. Then the ritual begi...

A teaser for the TV version of Brothers on the Run. The web series won 2012 Best On-Line series from the Snowboarder Riders Poll Awards and A Reels Award for Best Series 2012. In 2013 Red Bull Media House asked us to cut it into a six-episode TV show.
Carbon duck?!
check out what America's cup holding Emirates team New Zealand did, they just rebroke the record.
Rest in peace Bob Dill. Fair winds. Rewatching, in retrospect, I was both happy that Bob was able to sail the Duck again but saddened that the boat was not saved for posterity.
Oscar! For best documentary of an obscure subject.
"...ends up in the crusher or..." YIKES! Come on, guy. The Iron Duck is destined for a museum for sure. Maybe the Smithsonian! OMG! I commented before the end. I can't believe he scraped it! I thought it would be a bit of history to be preserved and admired. Sad ending, really.
Men of steel
The UK Greenbird currently sits in an eco visitor centre dedicated to renewable energy in Swaffham, Norfolk UK. I worked about 50 yards away from it a few years back and would visit the centre from time to time. The Bird looked cool in person.
To Bob and Bob - Got a challenge for you. Imagine an upside-down "Y" as the keel of a sailboat BUT the surfaces of this keel are expandible rubber using fluid. The shape of each surface can be expanded to enhance the airfoil effect. The bottom of the "Y" can pull down and/or in a righting moment. The sides and upper surfaces can be made to have hydraulic "lift" to pull the sailboat upright in the wind in a manner similar to any weighted keel on a sailboat but this is variable by speed and has a fraction of the weight of a typical sailboat keel. On a larger sailboat that typically has hundreds or thousands of pounds of weight in the keel, the same benefits of that weight can be had without the weight. Using a computer and a complex set of pumps, valves and inflatable panels, embedded within the keel, this would optimize the hull design and allow an efficient sail to push the boat faster for any given wind condition. <<This would work great in the America's Cup foiling catamarans to replace the flaps and increase the lift at slow and high speeds. It can also be fine-tuned to avoid cavitation.>> I did a computer model yrs ago but could not get anyone interested in building one.
Quite sad ….. the ducks ending
Bravo Zulu, that's what we Sapians do.
Sometimes Close.. Is close enough.... 140 mph.
I totally get this. Standing on a wide, windy beach years ago I realised I needed a landsailer, like the little ones I built as a kid, but big, and fast, with me in it, so I got parts and a welder and ten days later I was there doing it, and snapped the mast. Beefed that up and went hard and snapped it again. Next thing I'm hooking down Main Beach, Byron Bay, at 11pm, with a 100w headlight going flat out and thought I'd jump it on bumps but no, thing took off and disappeared. It flew, and I bailed, and I'm standing in the dark wondering WTF my landsailer's at. Sure it was right here a second ago. Found it way over there. Life doesn't get any better than that.
😂
Where is the, "Iron Duck" now ? These two guys, had a vision... And made it happen. They achieved it, by using two principles "KISS and what I call "DIBI" ! KISS = Keep It Simple Stupid. And DIBI = Dream It Build It.
I am dissapointed that the iron duck got sold for scrap
We where too!!!
A great documentary on the two Bob's with their backyard Duck, what an accomplishment! It took Emirates Team NZ a whole shitpile of people, money & technology to go 138mph recently in Australia. I'm Bob's age & have just finished building a backyard piston engine streamliner to take a shot at the 500mph barrier that is alluding people with millions of dollars. We will see what it will do.🤓
Wow that’s interesting. Can you share any info on your speed effort? Wishing you the best of luck on your project. And thanks for watching! 🙏
Great viddy yo about a history few of us know. Who knew a boat could go... sofa king fast without water below?
Сфабриковали дело ! Даже бабок привели ! Ну и клоуны
The music score is well done.
I grew up in Wisconsin the land of Ice Boating. Many fond memories of cold, Ice and 100mph.
Thanks for putting this together. I started land sailing in 1979 and although I never aspired to own one, I greatly appreciated the engineering and dedication it required to build a large, fast yacht. I'm glad I got to meet the Bobs and to watch the Duck run at speed on Ivanpah. It was something I'll never forget.
a testement to human will and inovation love it thnx for uploading this
What about that wind powered land craft with the big propeller on it? It is 100% powered by the wind (wind pushes against the propeller, propeller powers the drive wheels, craft goes faster than the wind).
Nice physics experiment, but too slow!
los fierros se van...las ideas quedan!
What a load of junk. The thing and your fraudulent film. We were racing landyachts faster than this in the 1980s. I built one in the school metalwork room at lunchtime and won the New Zealand champs in one of them. "Fastest in the world, East and West coasts!" Typical Seppo shite!
Thanks for your comment, Aaron. 👍
Respect
There is something in us that will race anything , and the more difficult the better...hats off to these yankee engineers...
Beautiful film. Thank you and well done.
I hope the guy at the scrap yard knows what he bought for thirty bucks.
I can only imagine the frustration of all that prep being so dependent on something as fickle as wind conditions. The scrapping vs. an honorary museum space must be bittersweet as well.
Not the fastest anymore :)
What a shame it was sold as scrap for 31 dollars .....
If it was easy everyone would be doing it 👍 Thanks for sharing your adventure
👍💕 Great video on the history of a pioneer and record breaker using only scrap parts and imagination to create a legend that inspired many others to reach farther.
And what is this for ? How much did you spend to accomplish this and for what ultimate purpose . I'm have trouble understanding what the purpose is
The challenge. Spend little, salvage alot, design, dream majorly. It is done because they can and strive to perfect and achieve. I am not surprised you don't understand. You probably never had Meccano or built flying model planes.
Dang that was an awesome experience. Thanks for sharing...
Thanks for your kind words!
Deep appreciation for the "agricultural engineering", a vision, a shoestring, and persistence...the BOBS ! will continue to inspire backyard innovators in a multitude of endeavors . Well done Gentlemen! Thanks for the excellent doc!
Well they are certainly right about one thing. The current record holder is about as far from amateur as you can get.
Thank you. Great film about great people. I own a Class2 and two Blokarts. Speed sailing is one thing , long distance is the other. Namibia offers endless gravel roads crossing deserts.
We came across an old nat geo documentary about the sailing races in Namibia but could never find a way to watch it. Super intrigued about it.
this was much more touching to watch than i had anticipated
Got to pace yourselves guys. Looks like you all had fun! Cheers!
Just have to add a comment here. I have sailed the Alvord and Ivanpah both. I was the second owner of Mariah who was built by Art Rothrock who lived in Portland Oregon where I lived as well. Mariah held the speed record for awhile I do believe at 97.4 mph. It absolutely ruled the desert when it was built. Probably one of the first winged sails. It had three, one main and two lift wings that could be tuned in to capture more wind in low wind conditions. It was really fun and exciting to sail. It only had one seat but room enough for my grandson to sit behind me. Amazing experience for a 5 year old. Good memories for all!
I got to get out in a solo seater on the Alvord and man was it fun. Good memories for sure.
Red bull jump in there with this guy
Bob, Bob, Bobs!!! So many museums would have loved the Iron Duck on the wall somewhere 😢 I know it was symbolic, but ouch. Oh well. You’re amazing pioneers. Godspeed on the next adventure. 🎉
Not a Tyrone to be seen.
Yeah, ... Vermonters!
Too many F_____ commercials. Capitalism at it's worse and quality at it's lowest. And these 2 guys are quality heros!
Dang sorry to hear that… and we don’t see a dime from those commercials! Thanks for watching 🙏
Great video though, showing 2 great Americans showing great ingenuity and perseverance. Very inspiring!
You tube used to be a really great product. Recently it has become an example of extreme capitalism with it's disgusting and overbearing use of commercials. They are ruining their own product with greed.

Only 250 likes? I loved this video, and those in this game… true grit guys 👍🏻❤️🇷🇴
An excellent documentary and as the saying goes, “records are made to be broken” but what was accomplished with the technology and garage ingenuity is something to very proud of.
What a great documentary. Bob Dill was a great help to us in our DDWFTTW record with the Blackbird. An all around great guy!
We where so surprised to see him in footage of Blackbird on the desert. We loved the blackbird project as well!
Fant
Wonderfull Thought of building an ice boat for years.....Thanks for putting this up.
