Good hits, but costly mental mistakes | ETTS Aug 2024 | USPSA Carry Optics GM | Tanfoglio Stock 2

Another match at @ettsgunrange complete. The stages today were awesome. I haven’t ran this much or shot this many partials in a while. I wish there was more of this. I had 3 major mistakes today that cost me over 12s. My shooting was alright, but mentally I couldn’t get dialed in. I finally got to shoot @ettsgunrange Falling Steel match. It’s a very well ran match with a lot of challenging small steel. Overall I felt like I shot well when my feet are planted and there aren’t any sideway leans. I could get the dot back on the next target quickly and could call those shots. However, there were some pretty tight leans today that completely threw off my timing. And I’m learn...

    Very cool to see you at this level now. The first person view is also great, though from my experience, a total pain in the ass to deal with lol. At least regarding setting it up to film, pulling the video out of it, editing it, etc. Any reason you don't use that aimcam camera/glasses thing where it shows you a near perfect first person view?

    • @vmanshooting
      @vmanshooting 12 дней назад

      Thanks man. I like the insta go2 quality much more. It doesn’t zoom in as far as the aimcam so I can see more of the field. But the worst thing about the aimcam was if anything touched the lens (eg accidentally tapping it while taking it off/on) I’d have no way to guarantee a good shot of my red dot unless I took out the app and adjusted it again. Do you use aimcam?

    • @petercho546
      @petercho546 12 дней назад

      @@vmanshooting I've never tried aimcam. I tried using lidcam and it worked pretty well in terms of getting your actual eye's perspective, but it totally blocked your eye in the process lmao. I also never found much use for the first person perspective as a means for training, though im not at a high level. An outside perspective/angle has always helped me tremendously. I can maybe imagine the first person would be helpful for seeing things like the quality of your target transitions, but not much else. I think there could be training value in the aimcam assuming you have a very good actual true perspective of what your eye is seeing, seeing the red dot and all, but the cost is yet another "does it offer more training value than the ammo I could buy instead of it?".

    • @vmanshooting
      @vmanshooting 11 дней назад

      @@petercho546I think a good 1st pov camera will allow you to assess transitions, your body/foot position relative to the tight windows, and having the gun up soon enough during entries. Your videos are very motivating as someone that just started USPSA, been following you for a couple months. What advice would you give someone just starting the sport, who wants to fast track it like you did (my goal is CO master) My first match was Saturday and my three biggest issues were nerves,stage planning,and the biggest issue...ego because of the standards I know I can hit in the CCW/defensive arena. Any advice is greatly appreciated :)

    • @vmanshooting
      @vmanshooting Месяц назад

      Thanks for following my journey. I just saw a couple of your videos, you shoot well. Based on what you told me, I think there’s 4 immediate things that you should consider: 1) you can have an ego (I certainly do), but you have to put it aside during the match and expect to place near the bottom initially. I’ve always sought to learn from shooters who were overall worse than me, but better than me at certain things. Ultimately, having an ego makes you shoot a certain way that isn’t maximizing your match performance or training value. 2) ask for someone to film your stage runs. Then go home and analyze where you think you lost time (eg malfunctions, make up shots, draw time, reload time, entries/exits) 3) look at practiscore and use their what-if feature to edit the times based on what you plan to fix. Predict the improvement and see where you would have placed to make sure you’re focusing on training the right things. The biggest mistake I see others doing is that they just work on draws and reloads or bill drills. The sport requires a pretty diverse set of skills and sometimes a simple session of working on entries with the gun up is the biggest single improvement. 4) find any stage plan and start to visualize that in your head. You must do it at least 20x on the sidelines before you go up to shoot. If you really struggle with remembering your stages (esp the small details) like me, show up early to walk the stages. That’s what I did, and still do, in order to shoot a stage without thinking. If you’re thinking or talking to yourself while shooting a stage, you’re not dialed in enough. During a stage run, I’m only focused on what my eyes are looking at. Hope this helps. I’m subscribed and hope to see you out there!

      @@vmanshooting Thank you so much for the detailed reply! I really appreciate it. Malfunctions definitely messed me up my first match...failure to seat 2 mags (my fault) and three FTF's because I didn't lube the gun before the match in 90 degree heat (also my fault). I had no idea about the what-if feature on practiscore, that sounds awesome and a good way to practice the right things like you said. I'm definitely guilty of #3 big time. So much of what I've done is just the typical 1 reload 1,bill drill, draw 1 shot etc. all from static positions... so this was really eye opening...especially reloading on the move and during entries/exits. #4 is probably what I need to work on the most. I don't really feel that I optimize my walkthroughs as well as other people. As soon as that buzzer goes off its like my brain turns to sludge...I didn't forget any targets but I had a BIG brain fart during a stage where I could've sworn there were 3 paper targets in an area...and there were only 2, I paused for like 3 seconds totally confused LOL. Made for a good laugh though. Again thanks so much for the reply, That's what's awesome about this sport is the lack of gatekeeping/famine mindset...and helping others grow...especially from you guys at the top. • @vmanshooting
      @vmanshooting 2 месяца назад

      I think I was the only one to take that option. I believe it comes down to what one’s strengths are. I have a slow draw compared to the people at my level-1.2s on to an open 7y target and guarantee alphas. However, for the slightly smaller target I feel confident I can get it in 1.35s. Through my live fire testing, taking hardest to easiest targets has been better for me and I’m certain it’s because the draw time differences aren’t large enough to make up for how easy the shooting becomes.

    In your opinion, what is it about steel that is more difficult, or maybe just simply different than paper? Is it as simple as "theyre usually A zone size or smaller" or is it more psychological?

    • @vmanshooting
      @vmanshooting 2 месяца назад

      That's a good question. My belief is that it is harder both physically and psychologically. Physically because you are transitioning for 1 shot vs 2. On paper, you get 2 shots so it's naturally easier to get sucked into the target to get the hits--even if you had a slightly bad first shot it's still relatively easy to get an overall Alpha - Charlie. On steel, everyone is trying to "bump transition" off of 1 shot, which means shot calling has got to be on point. The same Charlie on paper would have been a Mike on steel, and any makeup on steel is guaranteed to be 0.4-0.8s (for me). It's hard psychologically for me now because I felt like I used to be able to see a streak sight picture and let it rip and it will hit. But lately there have been moments where I miss even though I see a steady dot. It's been a combination of zero being off, loose optic, bad trigger pulls, injuries, poor stance, and poor patience that has caused me to miss steel. The mental block is real because it's been a long time since I've hit steel like I used to. I think all of the hoser stages we have at locals lends itself to this type of sloppy shooting :(. The balance between vision focus and aggression is something I'm constantly bouncing back and forth between.

      @@petercho546 haha, I've been thinking about steel and the math behind it for a while now. wrt to my journey, I dabbled in USPSA for several matches and it landed me in C class. I was C class for 2 years because I took a year off (had a kid) and when I did shoot, I did not train hard. It wasn't until June 2023 that I trained effectively. My kids had reached an age where I felt less guilty about leaving the house for several hours. And the main difference from before was I went to matches 2x a month. That gave me data points (stat sheet and video) that tailored my training to focus on my biggest areas of improvement. I stopped working on reloads and draws. I started working on entering into positions, on transitioning faster, on knowing how fast I *could* shoot on the move, on small aggressive movements, etc. I iterated on them every single match, while trying to keep my score respectable (no hero or zero mentality). Later on, when I felt like what was holding me back from classing up was my gun manipulation (Oct 2023) I really focused on it for about 2 months. But the main takeaway is the process of gathering data, retrospecting, training, and moving on to the next topic. When are you shooting a match?

      @@vmanshooting Hey congrats on the kid and good on you for taking care of your responsibilities. At the moment I'm busy with school for a job, and don't have any plans for competition shooting. With the way things are going as well, not sure how much money i should be spending on shooting instead of food and water and the stock market. I'm always asking myself if I should go to the range and the answer is always "no you'd get 10 times more value through dry fire" lol. Reaching the heights of shooting is definitely a desireable achievement, someday, but there's no way I can have it as my priority. Combined with the fact that I'm complacent with my performance, as my main goal from the start was to at least be able to protect myself and others and not accidentally shoot a good guy, while nobody is ever actually "ready" for something like that, I can carry with confidence. I completely agree with your mentality and process as well.

      @@petercho546 it is def a luxury to be able to shoot as much as I do. Would be nice if all outdoor ranges were 10 minutes away and ammo was free 😂

    What hammer spring are you using. I have some hard primers that I want to use but the 13s are not reliable.

      I use 16.5# in my practice gun, and 15.5# in my match gun. When I used 14# I had some issues with Blazer factory ammo, so decided to up it and not worry about that stuff.

      @@vmanshooting thanks. That’s what I use for practice also using unis ginex primers and 13s for matches with federal primers. I may try the 15.5 as it induced a lot of trigger freeze when going back to the 13s. Awesome shooting btw.
