Mountain Stew
США

I'm born and raised in the ʻāhuimanu area on Oʻahu and I solo hike/camp in the Koʻolau mountains.
Solo backcountry camping at Palikū cabin, Haleakalā, Maui.
A one night backcountry camping trip to the Palikū cabin at Haleakalā on Maui. As a note, you hear me say I lost the trail and was briefly off-trail, this was 100% an accident due to slightly overgrown trail conditions that made it hard to determine the correct path. I'm adamantly against going off trail at Haleakalā. You also hear me say I grabbed a spoon-shaped rock because I forgot to bring utensils...This was my first time camping at the cabins, so I didn't know what dishes/utensils would be there. It's important to note that I put the spoon shaped rock back where I found it, bumbai going get cursed. You can't take rocks away from their place of origin or else you're gonna have a bad ...

Perfect weather solo camping in the Koʻolau Mountains
Просмотров 2326 месяцев назад
Solo overnight camp in the Koʻolau mountains. I hike to the campsite, set up camp, cook up an epic mountain stew, get a decent night's sleep and film the whole journey. The weather was absolutely perfect- even the 3am rainstorm. I'm using my new DJI RS 4 gimbal with my Sony a7siii for filming, and it has really changed the game for me. I'm super excited to get back out and film and I have some ...

Thermarest Ultralight Cot Setup (Custom)

This my extra large custom thermarest ultralight cot. It's custom because I swapped the ultralight warming material for the regular cot mesh. It's not exactly ultralight, but it's become a necessary item for me camping in the Koʻolau Mountains.

ASMR ʻAiea Ridge Trail, Oʻahu

ASMR video of a spot on the ʻAiea ridge trail on the island of Oʻahu. The H3 is nearby in the distance resulting in the constant drone of cars and trucks. The sound of the wind and the singing birds intermix with the sound of the H3, and if you've ever been on this trail then I hope this video will take you back to that experience. Aloha
Best hip flask for hiking and camping
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.Год назад
In this video I talk about the pros and cons of some of the hip flasks I've used on my hiking and camping trips and which one I love the most. I review the Stanley classic wide mouth flask, the Nalgene 10oz hip flask, another Nalgene 8oz flask, a classic style hip flask, the platypus 800ml wine flask, and a 4oz fish flask. As always, gear use is totally subjective so you have to decide what exp...
Riding bike from Kahaluʻu to Hauʻula and back

Full road ride from Kahaluʻu to Hauʻula and back on my Scott Addict RC 10 road bike. On this ride I tested my new GoPro 11 on the chest mount. This was filmed 4k 60p 10 bit- I'm not sure how I feel about it. I went through 1.75 batteries throughout the ride with the GoPro filming pretty much the entire ride, so battery life is pretty solid. Since this was the trial run the audio is pretty much ...
Punaluʻu Plumeria Tree ASMR

A 15 minute clip of a beautiful and fragrant plumeria tree down by a house in Punaluʻu. The tree itself is close to the road, so in addition to the sounds of the wind, the ocean and the rustling leaves you can also hear the soft droning of cars rumbling down the road to the north shore. These are the sounds of life if you live by Kamehameha Highway along the beach- enjoy. Sony a7sii Sound devic...
Cooking up some mountain stew
Просмотров 4162 года назад
This is a quick cut video of how I cook up one of my famous mountain stews. This particular stew is more rich and thin than thick and hearty- I wanted to switch things up and try a different style. I use local pork and fresh veggies and let me tell you, it ended up delicious. For more recipes and for full videos of my solo camping trips check out the rest of my RUclips channel or visit my websi...

Have you had any issues with your cot? I am thinking of picking one up if I can find it, but have read reviews about feet breaking. I enjoy your videos. Will definitely try to do some backpacking when I make it back to HI someday!
So far the feet have been fine, I'm on the bigger side 220lbs ish right now and some of the support bars have bent, but could have been the uneven ground. I love the cot but even with some ultralight bits it's still pretty heavy. thanks for the support, it's cool to know that people watch and enjoy
Love the video bruda, keep it up!🤙
Awesome vlog!! ⛰️⛰️⛰️
Close call! Nice save.
Such beauty. Thanks for sharing it.
@@inthewind3675 thanks for watching
Seen lots of camping and backpacking and a lot of gloves. Im 58 and have never used them to cook my own food. 😂😂 great grill love how it packs down. Will be great for surf trips and over landing
Dude, same about the gloves. I'm right there with you. Saying that, I use them now. Most times, anyway. It can certainly mitigate the occasional hand washing - kind of a convenience thing as much as a food safety thing. Cheers old timer! Keep on til we can't keep on!
Cody man, thankyou for that awesome video. I got to see a couple mountain stew hikes. The ones posted to your fb before. I'm an old man in the sense that I don't get on the interwebs, nor do I have the latest social media. I'm pretty sure this is the first channel I've ever 'subscribed'. But I digress. Thoroughly enjoyed the entire video. It's a combination of some of my favorite things. The beautiful Ko'olau. And good food. I appreciate what it took for you to document that. Look forward to the next. God bless bro
Appreciate you watching man, makes me happy you enjoy it. Hopefully will just keep getting better and better from here
Absolutely stunning episode man, this looks ans sounds amazing!
Thanks braddah
What a cool look into your mountain adventure! The gimbal and new camera combo is a game changer - super clear footage, beautiful wide lens. What is your favorite Harry Potter book?
Not sure I can choose just one… I will say that the one I listen to/read the least is book 5 😬
Glad to see you out there, doin' what ya luv to do!
It’s been awhile but finally back at it
Mind sharing what trail you were on? I live in Hawaii Kai and am doing the AT in Feb and need to do a shake-down overnighter. Going with Hyperlite too. Aloha.
Why buy a big flask? Just bring the whole bottle 😂😂😂
Yeah, I don't understand a flask. Take the bottle
There’s an REI plastic one that is let cool too. It’s not see thru except for a window to allow strong how much is left/full.
Thank you for the review. I'll bet you could do some serious dry baking in that big pot! Just FYI, there are plenty of $20 Chinese knockoffs of that gas burner that work just as well. You can also get a cheap adapter for it' that will make it run on propane/Coleman fuel. There's also multi stove unit for about 30 bucks that will run on everything from diesel fuel to kerosene.
Hi! How much cost a skotti grill in the US? Love from Sweden
I ordered the Trangia Camping set 24-t to use the Billy 2.5 NS and frypan 200mm with my 27. I ordered from the Trangia website. Free shipping over $100.00ish.
Custom?
semi custom, I just took the mesh from the regular cot and use with the legs from the ultralight cot.
I think the blue sleeve is supposed to protect the whiskey or rum from uv
To get a more evenly distributed heat across the whole bottom of the billy pot or frypan put a piece of metal fly wire on the top of the wind shield. No hot spot in the centre. Cheers Steve from Aus.
Both pots are 1 liter
Recipe Yo! Looked at all of your videos, couldn't find it!☹️
Love the rain
Such a fun time but it can go bad quick
yessurrrr

Nice demo on how it goes together. Better than someone trying to teach a class while assembling, this is more real world.
👍 Great
Very relaxing
Just look on there site to find out what they do if you're trying to build the perfect set, I so should of ordered a case last time I was there
Thanks for the video. I lived on Oahu for almost ten years and rode a lot. Thanks for the good memories that your video brought up. Aloha.
Nice video, thanks for what you do.

I have the regular 27 pots in hard anodized. I don’t really think they are easier to clean. Regular aluminum you can scrub with steel wool. The HA are too slick and still stain.
Where did you get your butane cans?
I get from Uloha, not sure where else on island has um

Excellent recording. Exactly what wind protection did you use. Whatever it was worked brilliantly for those windy conditions.
thanks, I'm slowly getting better at recording the wind sounds. I use the rycote BBG with windjammer.
Mmmm mountain stew, at it again ☺️ 🍲
you know dat!
thank you camp jesus
The lighting is awesome. Quality camera.
Looks delicious
Very nice solo camping
Very nice and inspirational. I have a 4025 and 1st-gen MixPre 6. I also live in one of the windiest cities on Earth (Cape Town) so keen to try something similar here.
thank you. Iʻm still an amateur at field recording but I think capturing that wind sound in an appealing way is very much doable
This is so lovely!
i've been in group camping situations where everybody brings their own stove and cookware and prepares their own foods, but many times the winds are too strong for most stoves to stay lit, if they light at all, and i have loaned out my trangia to others to use after i've prepared my meal. if you camp near open water or on exposed mountains the trangia stormcookers are unbeatable.
agreed, even the super expensive stoves and fancy kits don't work as well. I just wish I could get the billy pot in a hard anodized version
i miss the thunder
One day I going catch the thunderstorm on camera, not this day though...😂
chheeee
Very cool
glad you enjoyed it 🤙🏽
Hi Mountain. Thanks for making this vid. Looks like an awesome hike. I'm looking to purchase that same grill as I like he concept of portability etc. There are some reviews but not crazy much yet and I was wondering what your experience is with regards to two potential improvement points: 1/ heat distribution: the front (where gas enters the manifold) may be getting hotter than the back and 2/ fat can drizzle down on to the burner and further down into the lower tray and then leak out. What is your experience here?
I haven't used the grill enough yet to get a really accurate sense of the hot areas, but I did get the sense that the front burned a little hotter than the back. It could've been because of high wind where I was cooking, and also due to fat drips causing flair ups in that spot, but I did notice some different temperature zones. As far as the fat goes I suppose it could be an issue if you're getting copious amounts of drip, but in normal circumstances I think any drips will mostly burn up as they hit the gas. I lined the inside with foil and there was definitely a good amount of grease, but not enough to pool up and leak anywhere. Could be an issue if you're grilling a high volume of greasy food in a short time. Good questions, hope this helps. Next time I use the grill I'll do more experimenting and try to get some better answers.
@@mountain_stew Thanks for coming back on this! I'm probably going to pick up one of these grills today. I think that the benefits of outweigh and improvement areas. Have a great day!
You're right. Depending on the size of the food and what you are cooking, it does give you a bit of a dual heat zone and it can be used beneficially. Maybe that's a glass half empty/full kinda deal. For what this grill is, it is super cool. It's a nitch item, for sure, but I don't think there is still anything yet out there that fits in this same market space. I don't have anything to do with these folks, but I really like what they've produced here.
How’s the billy pot handle open fire cooking?
As long as the handle is upright it wont get hot, but if it’s down on the side then it does get very hot. I’ve had that happen and i just use a glove or my hat to lift it back to center and it cools off super quickly
@@mountain_stew I mean more the pot in general (didn’t mean the handle specifically haha, sorry I typed it poorly). Can the pot handle/take open fire use ? A lot of aluminum can’t. Too low of a melting point.
@@ProdigiousReturn no worries! I've never used the pot over coals/wood fire, but I've used it with the alcohol burner attachment and the gas burner attachment at searing heat without a problem with melting or warping. I imagine that it would hold up fine over an open fire. I've used one of the smaller trangia aluminum bowls in coals before and it came out all black and sooty but no warping or anything like that.
