He wanted his father's inheritance so he could squander it; use it to fund debauchery, demonstrating foolishness. Jealousy is not a minor sin. The older son was resentful that his father would forgive the younger when he himself had worked hard. The parable demonstrates the forgiveness of God. It teaches us that we should not resent His mercy for others and think ourselves better than others. It is a wonderful story that has helped many to learn for thousands of years. We should all accept God's forgiveness whilst we can. After death, it will not be possible.

That kind of parent is truly foolish. "The parable demonstrates the forgiveness of God." You mean like God's forgiveness when He drowned 4 billion people plus millions of sinless animals? Not to mention Egyptian soldiers, His massacre at Jericho? Sodom and Gommorah? "The parable demonstrates the forgiveness of God." But it's just a fable - a mythology - a fairytale. Couldn't he come up with a REAL example? By mixing fake with real stories, the bible is confirming that it isn't always true.
