I got " spoken to" by the Dean of the School of the Arts, with my Father who was asked to be present, because I had completed all of the requirements and graduated early, in December, rather than May, and the Dean didn't know what to say at my graduation, so the Dean wanted me to stay for just one more semester, Why? I said, and graduated LOL......................
@@Mariecherement 😂
I've been in art academia for less than a year now. I've previously completed a minor in visual arts, but it wasn't "art school" per say (more open and beginner friendly at this university). Mind you I come from an education and social work background, so disciplines with high standards regarding code of conduct and ethics. I've never been told to shut up, swallow my values and criticized for who I am as a person as much as during these last few months in an art program supposed to help me become a professional artist. I'm queer and disabled, I find art essential as a tool for connection and activism. My work isn't always political, but I end up being told I'm too much no matter what I do in my classes. The head of department is notoriously disliked and have so many complaints, yet he still feels entitled to tell me to revise my opinions in my art and that I'm basically too emotional to do my work properly. I've done nothing different than the other students but discuss more informed topics. I even have good grades, yet they still clearly tell me I'm inadequate as a person DURING my evaluations! TL;DR: Now I know who I refuse to become as an artist and my current art school is rotten to the point of making me hate art academia as a concept. Doesn't even matter the quality of my work, they can't even help me improve cause they're too busy telling me I should change who I am 🙃
@@ragdollrose2687 That’s horrendous! I’m so sorry you’ve been treated that way. Art IS political (whether intentional or not); and you using art to express yourself and your experience is what art is for. Critique is never supposed to be a personal attack, and “too much” is a coward’s way of saying “stop making me think and reconsider my bias”. I truly hate the “machine” certain people try to shove artists in. I hope your experience changes for the better. ❤️
@@MeghanHarker thank you!! I've been told by fellow students that they just try to prepare us for grant writing and being showcased professionally, but if that's what it takes to be successful as a mainstream artist, I don't want it. I went there to learn to be a better artist, but I'm coming out of it despising this university as a whole instead. They seem so corrupt and soulless now 🫣 ETA: Silence is also political and I don't want to be complicit. Things won't change if we don't speak up
@@ragdollrose2687 I’d love to see your work. As I’ve gotten older, I find way more value in other artists sharing their skills. The traditional college structure just doesn’t really mesh, ya know?

It should be fun, I totally agree! Don't forget that lots of people do their prompts way up front! I don't believe this is in the spirit of such challenges and it negatively impacts other artists.

Good luck with your courses. 🙂 The bat is the best💖 Well, for the watercolour course. I'm having the impression that the participants expected to have a lot of money to spare and that it's a hobby that they have to keep doing to make the huge expenses worthwhile? I get the impression the materials list was created by someone who started in the 70s or 80s with this very old-fashioned selection of materials. Which are reliable but are also more expensive branded products and have to be imported in the USA and are therefore extra expensive. When you held up the Cotman pocket box set, I shuddered because this thing is my personal watercolour nightmare.😅 The colours aren't even bad. It just doesn't have enough mixing space for this colour selection for me and I would rather have this plus version bought with more mixing space or should just get the similar Sketchers box from Lukas Studio. Part of the mixing area is blocked with mixtures of the two shades of yellow, red and blue because I often need a neutral version of it. At first, I also thought that the reason was too little mixing space and wrong colour selection, the reason that you needed new colours for the course and not that it was student grade.
@@askialuna7717 the watercolor wasn’t even the expensive part. It is a six week class and that’s another reason I didn’t just use my pocket set: no mixing space. She’s handy for travel but for larger work, not so much. I got it initially just to try out watercolor in a non expensive way.
Art Supplies in NZ cost at least double the US price. $15 for a brush is reasonable.
@@lynleyshort2758 oh, the one I mentioned wasn’t $15. It was $50.

Ok this is a very elementary question but my 8 year old daughter and nephews were debating the other day- are black and white colors?

The very first sentence is relatable af
I never could get into traditional art. Felt like all the practice I was going to need was just throwing money away making terrible drawings, ya know? But, a few years back, I buckled down, bought a tablet, and committed to learning how to draw. About a week later, I decided I was going to come up with, draw, and fully render (to the best of my ability) an original superhero character every day for a full month. The final one took me 21 hours sitting at my computer. It was... a lot, and my focus on results meant I wasn't really optimizing my practice time. That said, because I'd committed to a specific goal, I was able to stick to it and pour hours into the process, so I think I learned a lot more than if I hadn't set the goal. Currently waiting on a new tablet, as I like my old one, but the pen crapped out again. Figure if I'm going to have to keep spending money on that, I may as well get one a little more up to date. Having to take a week off in the middle of a project because your pen starts having issues is definitely a bother. I'm still not top notch, and digital painting specifically is a bit out of reach for me still, but I've gotten good enough to do art for my characters in tabletop games. That's really what I wanted to begin with, so I'm happy with it. Have to work on style variation and speed, now. Made a poster for the adventuring party in my last Pathfinder Second Edition game as we were wrapping up and it took me ~36 hours, maybe? Even with taking a bunch of shortcuts, being a little slapdash with it. Still turned out alright, but the individual components weren't quite up to my usual standards. Just too big a project for where I am currently with regard to skill. Anyway, I'm curious to follow along and see what your process and progress is like, coming from traditional art. Imagine it'll be very different from mine, where I spent around three decades convinced I "couldn't draw," then decided one day that was dumb and if I wanted to do so, I was damn well going to. I've never used Procreate specifically, as I started off with Krita and enjoyed it, so haven't shopped around too much. I will say, if the hundreds of hours I've spent on digital art have taught me anything, it's just how important it is (at least for me) to experiment. Different brushes, different processes, etc. Sounds like you've reached a similar conclusion with regard to that.
There is nothing better than saying “fuck it” and learning how to do something you want to do. My first tablet was a Wacom and I hated it. I did not have the coordination to not watch my hand and watch the screen instead and it felt so disjointed. This drawing took me a little under 10 hours to render and color. Deciding to fully render a character every day for a month is a wild goal and I’m so glad you made it through. I totally understanding having projects you don’t feel you’ve leveled up to yet, but when you get there, it’s awesome. Keep going!
art school is a waste of time
Pretty much. I prefer one-off classes.
Learned it too late 6 years of my life wasted im on last year ....i hate paper and pencil hate when teacher twll
I'm glad I attended art school in Chicago. Best thing I ever did!
Part of me wishes I'd gone to a different college, like RISD or something that focused more on art specifically, but whatcha gonna do?
I’m sorry you had this experience. Some of the least creative people I’ve ever met are wanna be creatives. You can usually figure out who they are immediately as they are super type A but claim to be artists. Steer very clear of them and anyone who tries to control your ability to create freely.
What doesn’t kill me only makes me funnier.
@@MeghanHarker Ive felt that way myself - some my best comedy comes from terrible jobs and bad co-op art experiences.
Greetings and sorry you have had such a horrifying experience with arts. As a very creative person I had this idea that arts was all about fun and beauty and creativity. as soon as I started my arts history degree, I was blasted with how arts are and have been a form of power, control, a currency. I hated everything and the more I studied arts the more distant I became to the art world. art galleries, particularly here in nz are 100% biased, you only get a spot if you are sleeping with a director or someone in charge, and pretty much everything that I loved about arts, (with very few exceptions) have become meaninless to me. staying art-illiterate is p[robably the best thing an arts person can do, stay true to what they like and admire without knowing the ins and out of the agendas behind the artworks is best practice to avoid huge disappointments.
I've never taken a dedicated art history class. I think if I were, I'd prefer to focus on a singular artist instead of the overall movement. Or on the development and curation of certain supplies or techniques. Everything has a dark history to it, a response to politics or world events, but I can see how that soured your taste for art.
@@MeghanHarker oh thanks for your reply, it means something.
