Very informative. Are there similar studies of St Clair and Lake Huron?
In 2012, I mentioned to a co at the London boat show, “close the dambs. He asked why, I replied, “run electricity the water level drops, water levels drop pickerel eggs dry out in the sun.
Grass pickerel or chain pickerel ?
Is there information that leads to unhealthy population of Smallmouth bass in the St Lawrence do to the Goby eating eggs?Has the population decreased in Quagga mussels?
Great info. I would like to see what current info is available in 2024.
Very informative!
This is Amazing ! Thank you for All your Hardwork and Dedication. I don't think most people would Believe there are so Many Lake Sturgeon in the Niagara River.
i ended up with ten pickerel chunks good tutorial though
Up here in Saskatchewan Canada we don't call them pickerel the names they have here are northern pike... Jack... And the ones who do not like their table fare call them slough sharks and we call walleye pickerel... We also know that the jack is it type of pickerel
Thats a completely different species
Okay, now for beginners.
I live in Rensselaer County and only became familiar with the LL Salmon "Restoration" project last year. I'm a member of TU and the Atlantic Salmon Federation. I made a few trips up there in the fall to fish for them, and while I didn't catch any, I did see a number of them. . .enough so I'm hooked, excited to go back there this spring for the smelt run. I caught my first LLS in a Lake Ontario trib years ago, the two I caught were twins, about 2 lbs. or so, great fighting fish. I'm very much looking forward to seeing the "recolonization" of these fish, especially now that I'm in my mid-50s, just in time as they say, but it'll be a nice legacy to leave our children. Bravo and keep up the good work!.
Well done, Chris !!!
Where can I find a reference to the rule of thumb power analysis presented at the end? Ie Njuv * N_adult > 5 * N_predicted?
Bruh I caught some of these at lake blackshear Georgia and I was like ain't fucking no way I just caught a pike but two even. We never seen them in there before and been fishing it 20 years, I watched this video and it helped out alot thanks
My first ice fishing trip of the year is to otsego lake. Always a good time. Hopefully about 2 weeks.
This dudes nice w it. I hope it’s this easy when I do it
Thank you. God bless you and yours.
Nicely done. Thanks
I had a boat dock on the Genesee river from like 2014-2017. They said the lake sturgeon started to spawn in 2021 but I’d like to say that they are probably wrong about this because back in 2015 I have seen baby sturgeon swimming around my dock so it has been happening for longer.
Super useful tutorial.
That’s awesome. I’ve fished Oneida Lake with a buddy a few times for walleye but no luck
What about the cheeks?
I clicked because i like that eel song
Instead of playing with y bones, you should start cutting into tail up to Y bone then grab fillet tail ends one peace in each hand and pull apart ( zipper ) into Two pieces, then take the piece that has Y bone attached to it and ( zipper ) remove the Y bone and you are left with boneless fillets of wallet, a lot cleaner and not as messy.
You should make a video of this. I’d be interested in seeing it
I fish oneida and cayuga both have plenty pickerel...I normally fillet them like northern pike but will def try this...thanks for sharing.
thanks for this video cant wait to try !
We have northern sunfish in tenn. Catch them all time . I send pics if u want. They in my aquarium.
Finally I understand the last part of fileting a Pickerel. Good Show!!🤠🐟👍
This is a fantastic gem of a presentation
Im local to champlain. Always been fascinated with champlain sturgeon hope to see one with my own eyes one day
When we get morphometric/meristic fish data of the different species of the same genus then what we get from this data while collected from the same landing point
Great video.
Wow you are really good at that! Thanks for the tutorial.
Thanks for the instruction. Well done sir.😁
I just found out today what these actually are.
Just got back from a walleye trip to Oneida and caught my first chain pickerel but threw it back cause everyone said they were too bony. I'll have to try this out next time. Thanks!
This was a top-notch tutorial. Thank you, sir!
MasterChef canada
I’m going to have to try this. A local lake has a lot of pickerel. Even if I mess a few up learning, it will still be beneficial to thin then out.
finally found another oneida lake angler on here
The bony pieces and the head can also be used for fish stock.

Nice fillet brother thanks for sharing this video to me come check out the trolling for wahoo video on our channel here on RUclips, I just subbed to your channel hope to see more videos , please come check out the channel bud 👊❤
Very cool!
Very informative
Pickerel are great to eat my ABSOLUTELY favorite...you can fillet the off the bone and leave the skin on, flip them skin side down and "gash" them. Then the bones will melt away when u fry them and u get the whole fillet. Then we usually cut into two strips slicing with the length of fillet..when I say "gash" I mean take ur fillet knife and slice the meat to the skin eat cut very close from the previous cut u made, U will be able to feel the fillet knife slice through the bone very close to the skin... once u have tried this there is no way u will spend that much time doing all the slicing and feeling u did... but great video bud I hope yall try it's a game changer seriously(it's the same way u gash sucker)
did you grow up in NH or knew someone that did asking because that cutting board looks exactly what came out of the wood shop back in the late 80s
i was born in Odessa Ukraine on the Black sea we eat this fish there as a kid i use to go every morning to fish for them and i used curated pork fat
Very nice. This is the first video I've seen that mentioned the pin bones along the lower tail end. We don't have pickerel where I'm from but I've been filleting northern and they all have those pin bones at the lower tail section. No other instructions or videos ever mentions it. Great job on mentioning that in your video.
awesome!
