Doc Payne
Wow! What an incredible story by a truly amazing man. Doc is such a talented guy and for all of his experience he is a very humble man. For those of us in the Duncan Flying Club, we have had the wonderful opportunity to share many memories with our great friend Doc and have had the privilege to hear his stories. We couldn't be more proud of him! He has helped many of us along the way by sharing some of his vast experience, by his training and guidance and has helped us become better pilots and better people. I had the pleasure of being taught how to fly in formation by Doc and Chris and a group of us have the honour to fly the formation flight for Remembrance Day in honour of Doc and all of the other brave men and women that gave so much and those that continue to serve. Doc, you are truly an inspiration to all of us and a true Canadian hero. You are always in our thoughts and in our hearts and we will remember you all on this very important day.

Brilliant interview. Never met a Canadian working field soldier who did not praise the Typhoon "Cab Ranks" swooping in to pulverize well hidden and dug in german tanks, guns, and mortars. Our RCAF pilots were said to be the fastest to get down and onto the enemy would be ambush forces, saving countless Canadian lives. We could have used 3 times as many Typhoons. Without the courage and excellence of the Canuk, Aussie, Kiwi, South African, and Brit ground support pilots, we would have a very different, and worse world today.

@1:00 I've known veterans who told me they initially signed up because they were young men who felt they were going to be stuck on the family farm and it would be a paid adventure. That's honestly what they said was a major part of why they signed up. One was a co-worker at the old Coliseum building of the Toronto CNE in 1978. The topic came up because the first day there he told me he was recalling to himself what the place looked like back in '39. The Coliseum had been converted to barracks during early mobilization. That was his first time every being in a city.

I once had the immense honour of meeting Mr Summersides when he visited my school to talk about his experience. He was an amazing man with so much to share and say. Recently the 80th anniversary of D-Day got me thinking about that experience and while I was very saddened to learn that he has since passed away, I am immensely happy that his story has been immortalized for future generations to learn from just like I did.

Canadians are very grateful for your service to our country. Sending my deepest sympathies to your daughters and grandchildren. A lovely man like you will be missed and remembered. I was fortunate enough to meet and make friends with Harry on the 60TH DDay Anniversary. My friends and I would 'chaperone' a number of veterans from our base at my friends B&B, 'Normandy Beaches' in Arromanches. I've not heard from Harry for a while now and would dearly love to know if he is still with us. a humerous and wise individual who inspired myself and friends in a number of ways. One of my 'heroes' that I was so lucky to spend time with.

I quite enjoyed watching this video and listening to Peter Chance's recollection of his time aboard HMCS Skeena. My father also served on Skeena and was aboard when she dragged her anchor and went aground on Videy Island the night of 24 Oct 1944. Dad was amongst that group of sailors who ended up in the water with the Carley floats and who was fortunate enough to make it ashore.
