What war crimes? Did members of allied armies commit war crimes? Yes. Was the entire point of the war from the allied perspective a war crime? No. The German armies entire goal WAS a war crime in and of itself.

The Soviet occupation of eastern Poland was qualitatively different than the Nazi occupation of western Poland. The Soviet agenda was class war, the Nazi agenda was race war. Race wars are wars of extermination. You can't change the fact you are a Slav or a Jew. You can change your "class" -- you just become a supporter of the Communist regime.

There was no surprise when Hitler penned War Directives, undated and amplified after the invasion, outlining how cruelly the Slavs, Jews, Communists were to be liquidated as an active policy measure of Barbarossa. The internal dialogue within the Wehrmacht was to try and not get too associated with the atrocities of the SS and Einsatsgruppen. Many generals fully co-operated and assisted the SS in their deadly campaign. Had they lived I believe the Allies, post 1945, would have found it impossible not to have von Reichenau and Model ( among many) join Keitel and Jodl on the gallows. The reason why there is a comparison is that there are similarities in the rise of all ultra-nationalist movements. A nation perceives itself to have fallen on hard times. Lots of people are unhappy. Lo and behold, someone comes in, says that he can magically fix everything, blames every single problem on a convenient other, and ignores the facts in favor of what his supporters want to hear. He gets into power, and thanks to his political clout, can ignore inconvenient things like legal restrictions. What he does at this point, varies widely. It doesn't have to involve the "other" being exterminated, but a strongman getting into power is rarely a good thing.

Furthermore, the American conservative party in the US is completely different from that in Europe. American conservatives-the right are for small government, but not Laissez-faire. Extreme US conservatives are libertarians. However, all conservatives belong to the party of Lincoln, and are proud of it. European conservatives-the right, however, are not for small governments, and at the extreme can be fascists. In name, the Nazi party was national -socialist (left), but in practice, they were fascists. Nationalism is also a word that is ballyhooed about as if there exists some unicorn-nation in the world that doesn't, in deed, practice nationalism. If you know of one, I'd like to know of it. Of course, Antifa is a fascist organization, certainly in the US. It's all about their actions. Give them a "shirt" to wear, and they'll be right at home.
