How THE WHO defined HARD ROCK with this album | WHO’S NEXT album review, discussion & analysis
He was born at a fantastic age of 89
I met him at a truck stop in Georgia. My mom let me run up to his tour bus. This would've been 1994 probably. He was so nice to me!
Many critics continue to overlook the fact that Mr. Emerson's compositions are brilliant, harmonically, melodically and rhythmically. and even structurally. His solos especially were brilliantly conceived, and exciting, dynamically building to a climactic release. Definitely not about the volume of notes in any sense. Especially in concerts, his mastery of improvisation and the synthesizers was very impressive. I do agree that at times it got to be too much. This is why, possibly, they could have devoted a little less time to touring and maybe created one, even two more large scale masterpieces. What a fantasy, after all, while it seems they came out hot and released three albums in 18 months, ultimately they have four great studio albums in four years.
Guns and Fuckin Roses 🌹 did this!!
We hear the voices, but the pic doesn't move... lame!
It’s a podcast, dude. 😂
Enjoyed your analysis. I grew up in the 60's 70's can relate to the song
Thanks a lot for your comment! 😊
I heard that the article for the plane crash was in the middle of the paper ( the star in New York state,) Assuming Don read a lot to find the article.
Crazy to think it didn’t make the front page!
i think Randy Meisner definitely stands out as a unique voice in the band as well.
I think they all played their part and the vocal harmonies throughout are just beautiful!
Just stumbled upon your channel. Very entertaining!

The "tribal" drum part on the song Loneliest Rider is an ode to Farner's Cherokee heritage.
Didn’t know that! Very interesting!
Prior to being a 4 piece band, Farner was also the keyboard player for the band and keyboards were featured in many songs on the first 5 albums. One of the things that I think separated Grand Funk from many of their contemporaries is they were not just a great, tight band but also they were a SHOW band with loads of on stage energy.
I feel like you can even tell from the energy of this recorded album that they would have been insanely fun to watch live!
It's not my favorite album (it's OOS) but it really has the best bass lines. great and deep songs like fury and rules by secrecy
The bass is absolutely killer on this album - carries so much weight and power whilst the guitar is focussing more on ambience and atmosphere! Do you have a favourite Muse album?
@@longlivernrpod yes Is Origin of symmetry Alt rock classic
Love this conversation! Indeed the mixes are amazing on this album. Rick Rubin didnt really do any mixing. He might make some remarks to the mixing engineers but defenitivly is involved in the whole process.
Great conversation! This was my 2nd favorite Peppers release for quite some time until "Unlimited Love" came along and nudged it into 3rd place. Still a great record, and it truly is one of Frusciante's crowning achievements.
What's your No1? And also I think it's great that RHCP are still making great music almost 30 years after their original music first became known - such a consistent and distinctive band!
@@longlivernrpod Blood Sugar Sex Magic . Just an unbeatable record, SO many classics on that one. Mother's Milk would be #4, and Stadium Arcadium rounds out my Top 5. Still trying to embrace Dream Canteen, which is so strange because it's from the same sessions that yielded Unlimited Love. I just know that when Unlimited came out I bought a cassette version of the album so I could play it in my car (😄), and played it every day for the entire summer. Seared those songs into my brain in a way I hadn't done since some releases in the mid '90s.
@@brettschacht4183 They've just got such a vast catalogue of songs and music that, album to album, is so different! Yet still such a consistent and distinctive sound! What a band!!!
thanks!

ELP said themselves! We weren't prog! They hated being called prog. Where did these guys get there info?!
Black Sabbath said they weren’t Metal, but Hard Rock and hated being classified as Metal, but as we look back and look at the evolution and genealogy of the music of that time, it’s very clear that Black Sabbath do fit completely into that Metal bracket. Same can be said for ELP and, unfortunately for them, they don’t really get a choice in how they’re classified 😂 They might not have cared for that label or associated themselves with it at that time, but history, hindsight and music evolution shows us that they unequivocally belong in the Prog bracket!
A steely Dan is a reference for a steel dildo in a 50s n9vel cabinet NakedLunch.
“Home At Last” is also my favorite on the recording 👍🏽
They’re all so good and so different.
@@longlivernrpod true, the entire recording is excellent ✌🏽
Illusions 1&2 are incredible albums. People who shit on them are clueless. They weren’t going to make Appetite 2.0, so what we got was a masterclass of blues groove laden in-your-face hard rock with swagger.
Looking forward to listening to 2! Yeah it’s a great album - such versatility and expression yet still firmly GnR music - no doubt about it!
Interesting take guys. A lot of people trash the Illusion albums, undeservedly in my opinion. I would be intrigued to hear what you think of Chinese Democracy.
I’m sure an episode for CD will appear in the future! Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment. 😎
Good singing and good playing, product by Frank Zappa is a great album. And Mark's wife thought it was there best album to
I think Zappa always had a soft spot for GFR!
Part of the reason that the band name was shortened on the We're An American Band album was that the band was involved in a nasty lawsuit with the former manager Terry Knight. The previously released album before We're American Band was produced by the band itself, they needed to have a hit in order survive all of the legal problems so they hired Todd Rungren who had a reputation for producing hit songs.
Buddy rich the greatest drummer ever was a big fan of carl palmer he allowed carl to sit in with his band...Buddy said carl was the best drummer in rock.
Don't know and can't say, but I've heard mentioned Paice and Peart, neither of whose playing I have listened to really, so one can definitely state, whoever is best, their name likely begins with 'P'.
Powerslave is my favorite album. It took me a while to decide, because of Somewhere in Time. The sound and riff in Powerslave is pure Iron maiden. Not a single bad song in the album (ok maybe Back in the Village, but it has great solo) And, not to mention The Duellists, very underrated song. I probably listened to Rime of the Ancient Mariner more than any other Maiden songs.
My favourite Maiden album, too!
John peel, a DJ and music critic said elp was a waste of talent and electricity
I love this band! I saw elp 5 times during in the 93 and 97 south American tour.
He was an idiot.
Ultimate album..amazing artwork..Maiden best year..
Agreed! And a phenomenal tour to follow it!
@@longlivernrpod absolutly..World Slavery Tour..ultimate concert, after that Maiden little bit lost that energy..Somewhere in Time is good album but sound too much,,studio,,..no agresive riffs..Powerslave remain best album..
The duelist is my favorite song from that album.
Such a great and underrated track!
Not even top 5 I think it’s there most overrated album personally
Which one's your favorite? Mine is Killers.
What are your Top 5?
Yes - Killers is amazing, top 3 for me!
@@longlivernrpod 5. number of the beast 4. iron maiden 3. powerslave 2. piece of mind 1. killers
Too 5 for me is seventh son , somewhere in time , number of the beast, senjutsu , brave new world After those piece of mind, powerslave , My least favourite albums are book of souls and final frontier They have good songs but Bruce’s voice just grinds on you he spends way too much time screaming up high
1 of the shows I went Keith knocked over his organ climbed into and it was lifted into the air while he was playing it and when Carl did his solo they lit it up we're it looked a little like it was on fire
Always put on amazing live shows
So I’ve heard!
they actually smile more than Diarrhea Leppard
Lake was on In The Wake of Poseidon.
What an album! I bought it in 1969 and have been playing ever since. The album is dominated by the underrated Ian MacDonald whose flute/sax and mainly mellotron grooves are second to none. 10/10 unreservedly!
Agreed! A perfect Prog Rock album for sure!
Nice to hear the praise .. I've been an ELP fan since I followed Greg from KC... Keith Greg & Carl haven't always gotten the love & respect and appreciation that they deserve. ..they also got a 17yr old in 1970 to start listening to jazz & classical with new ears
We have a new episode out today focussing on ‘In The Court Of The Crimson King’ which you may like! Great to hear - I can’t say I’m a devout fan, but what I’ve heard I’ve been mightily impressed with. Felipe likes them a lot, I believe!
@@longlivernrpod Give it time and check out more of their catalog. They'll grow on ya. They even did what I termed ProgJazz.. Very cool tune with arguably the longest name :WHEN THE APPLE BLOSSOMS BLOOM IN THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND I'LL BE YOUR VALENTINE 😁. It's worth a listen and quite unique.
Twenty first century schizoid man to Islands remains pertinent today.
They quit because they weren't being paid for their work. They had to pay rent and were broke.
Interesting stuff! Thanks for letting us know! 😎
@@longlivernrpod you are welcome
You need to do better research. Greg wasn't interested in walking on the carpet and wasnt "obsessed" with it at all. They only bought it to cover a rubber pad they had to put down to ground him because he got an electric shock early on from some of the equipment. And they did have a guitarist - Greg played guitar often with ELP as well as bass primarily; he was originally a guitarist first until he had to play bass in King Crimson.
Hi Tara! This podcast simulates conversations that we would have whilst we toured the world together. We might listen to an album, read and article or two if we have the time, and then discuss it! We don’t claim to know everything and certainly don’t get everything right re song titles, albums, years etc Just two musicians chatting about some great bands/albums! So thanks for listening closely and letting us know about the use of the carpet - we felt our research time was best spent listening to the music rather than finding out the exact reason a carpet was used! 🤣
@@longlivernrpod The carpet actually covered a rubber mat that prevented electrical shocks.
Carl's kit was made by British Steel and as the story goes Carl was told that BS had two thicknesses of Stainless Steel in stock for the drum bodies in 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch thick. Figuring thicker is better Carl optedfor the half inch. The kit was incredibly beautiful but heavy as f. After collapsing a couple of stages they had to be more aware- they had to reinforce the stages
What a cool fact! Thanks for sharing!
@@longlivernrpod My pleasure. 🤓 ELP has been my #1 band since I was 17 in 1970 and I followed Greg Lake when he left King Crimson to form this odd new keyboard-led trio with Greg mostly covering bass and a percussion madman from a band I also loved -The Crazy World of Arthur Brown (although Carl had been with Atomic Rooster just before ELP). Another fun fact... Carl's beautiful, engraved, heavy AF (it took two big roadies just to move the bass drum 😁) stainless steel kit proved to be a bit unwieldy for touring and Carl eventually sold it. Later at auction, it was purchased by none other than Ringo Starr, who still owns it to this day.
@@quentinmichel7581 We've got a King Crimson album episode coming out soon - stay tuned!

CARPET WAS TO PROTECT GREG SAFE FROM ELECTIRC SHOCK BECAUSE HE DID GET ZAPPED ON STAGE WHILE SINGING INTO A MIKE
ELP Forever!
I'm a huge Who fan & am very familiar with this story ... wanted to hear more about it ... DISAPPOINTED! 🤯
This video totally wasted my time and did not add anything to the conversation.
Hi Diane! These little videos are what we call ‘shorts’. Some channels exclusively put all their content out through shorts, others use it to give a taste of what a longer video or an extended episode might have in it! As you can see from all the information on the video and the end photo, we are a podcast and this is one of our episodes. In this episode we were talking about the drumming connection between Bonham and Moon - this side point came out of that conversation and we spoke about it for a brief while! 😊
Hi Diane, So sorry to hear you feel that this was a waste of 25 seconds for yourself! As aforementioned in the previous reply, there are plenty more discussion points in the episode! This ‘short’ is there just to give a flavour of some of the stuff we discuss! 😊
Keith Emerson was a great composer. He is referred to by many as Maestro. Keith was not a freaking ego freak. As far as he was concerned he had shit that had to get out. Of the three. Carl was the sole recipient of classical training. Some very good training. To Keith, music was his life. From what I understand. Keith was upset that his damaged right hand and there by he, would let the people of Japan down. A country with a deep appreciation and love for Keith and his music. He took his own existence before a planned tour was to open in Japan. 2016
He was truly a masterful musician and even better songwriter/composer!
you got it wrong. Jump is from 1984. sang by david lee roth. 5150 is the next album, it doesn't include Jump and Sammy Hagar sings
Awesome! Thanks for letting us know!
Saw them in the 70's, best rockband ever. 💪👊😁
Many would agree!
As a matter of fact they were so good they were considered the standard of musical excellence that other musicians were measured by back in the day. They were actually more of a fusion band then a progressive rock band as far as Talent is concerned😮
ELP the BEST Prog group EVER
Many would agree!!!
I've always thought of the Barbarian as the first prog metal song along with 21st century schizoid man😮
Very well could be!
A lot of people don't know yes actually opened up for Emerson Lake and Palmer in the early days also a lot of those flashy outfits Keith Emerson got from Japan and said that Rick Wakeman used to check him out on stage to check out those outfits he was wearing amongst other things. Neil Peart was greatly influenced by Carl Palmer calling him one of his major influences prior to him being with Rush.
Wow! We didn’t know about Yes opening for them - that’s really cool and especially the part about Rick and Keith admiring each others clothing! 😂
@@longlivernrpod of course yes opened for Emerson Lake and Palmer in 1971 and even stated that EOP helped give them their start even though yes started a little earlier than ELP they were just a regular rock and roll band at the time and didn't have the huge supergroup progressive rock reputation that ELP h a d coming off of the Isle of Wight Festival.. furthermore it was Rick Wakeman admiring Keith Emerson's outfits and performing..
I've not read that.
@@robertdohme1890 I didn't read that either it was interviews on my local radio station with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer.
Keith Emerson was an autodidact he never had any formal training gentlemen however he was a prodigy and a genius.😊
