Even Keeled

Watch as we refit the iconic, 1974 Westsail 32. This boat has crossed oceans, survived several hurricanes hitting the East Coast, and under the right sail plan, avoided the moniker, "Wetsnail."
Following Hurricane Isaias direct hit on Southport, N.C., the boat avoided major damage, but was deemed totaled. We rescued it from salvage and hope you follow along on this journey - step-by-step bringing the boat back to seaworthy and even keeled on the Atlantic.

What are your thoughts on using the matt stack in the reverse order - largest circle first...
I like having a large amount of surface area covered by that first patch. I’ve seen a lot of professionals do it that way. Conversely, some, concerned that there could be failure, prefer starting smaller and working up to largest so that each patch has a bond to the hull. Sorry for such a long response. And for full disclosure, on the inside of each thru-hull repair, I glassed small to large.
where the fibergiass ?
I’ll have to watch back, but all repairs used 1708 biaxial fiberglass cloth. This included glassing on the inside of each outer repairs as well. Thanks for watching.
You replaced those old below waterline seacocks with drains above the waterline that did not need seacocks, is that right?
Correct! The scupper drains from the cockpit do not need 2 1/2" seacock drains. Rerouting them above the waterline has worked exceptionally well so far. Deleting two thru-hulls is an improvement.
@@Even_Keeled makes sense. I like it
Very cool. Keep it up!
I finally have more time so ramping up progress. Thanks for watching.
Sand it 240 grit and re varnish about 5 times more and you’ll only your way to pro job. Check out Dan Lee Boatbuilding he’s really good on finishes.
Agree. It’ll need a few more coats, but that can happen after splashdown. Getting it restored and a good base on all of the wood for now. Thanks for watching.
Appreciate the inert gas tip! Didn't realize a product like that existed.
Beauty is in the details, keep to it and that whole vessel will be gleaming, ship-shape and ready for far horizons in no time!
It's no brand-new Hallberg-Rassy, but you are right - it will look so nice once it is completed. Especially the cap rail along the high bulwarks and the wood of the bowsprit.
Glad to see you're back and making more progress 👍👍your channel is a wealth of information and help, thank you
Glad it’s helpful. Trying to be more to the point so this refit gets done. Very close. Enjoying the process.
Glad to see more progress!
Good to see an update! We are currently working on bowsprit and chain locker bulkhead issues.
I am going to make sure my forward bulkhead is a true “collision bulkhead” before I send the boat back to the Atlantic. I’ll reinforce and make sure it’s a watertight bulkhead.
Almost there! Biggest hurdle: electrical reorganized/rewired. It currently works, but as is the case with old boats, a lot of issues and concerns.
Good to see you back! Sounds like the final dash is on!
Glad to see all is moving forward 👍👍 thanks for all videos they are a huge help and can’t wait to see what Pacific Yacht Systems comes up with.
I’m looking forward to a better electrical setup too. Everything works, but it’s a mess overall. Questionable in some areas. It’ll be well worth the advice.
@@Even_Keeled I’m anxious to see your post as PYS seems to be the go to place for anything boat electrical related 👍
Simplicity is best! Don't fall for all the latest electronics that will fail and cost money!
I’ve had more time and the current setup will be basically Garmin inReach, navionics, and existing nav/tech gear that cam with the boat.
Did you grind down the inside as well with as many layers or was it a simpler job there?
Great question. I repeated the process of revealing new glass and tapering the site before building it back up with layers. It wasn’t as expansive as the outer hull repair. It’s a thicker boat than most, and the thickened epoxy plugged well.
If you have a water heater aboard, be sure to flush it thoroughly before attaching it to your new engine. I did not and as a result filled my new Yanmar engine heat exchanger with rust. Best of luck. Harry Hungate -west-about world circumnavigation 1997-2013.
Great tip. I don’t have one, but I’ve had to thoroughly inspect the diesel tank out of similar concerns. Could not risk it. All clear.

Awesome work!!
Great products! More painting to come!
Can't beat a Beta Marine engine for price and reliability !!
Sure can’t. It’s upgraded with an 120 amp alternator and as a 38, a little more power than other options that go into a Westsail 32.
Nice !!@@Even_Keeled
Thanks for the updates 👍. Man what a great job you’re doing and thanks for sharing your progress so we learn also, much appreciated
With the bottom repaired and painted, the engine ready for final installation, I’m feeling a lot closer to the end of the refit. All the remaining jobs won’t have me crouched in an engine bay.
@@Even_Keeled If you want to know about crouched, wait until you do the electrics! The engine bay is your starter course! 😅 Big alternator was a very good choice.
Thanks for the video, gonna definitely help me fill up some holes in my old boat!
That's good to hear. These older boats have so many more thru-hulls than necessary. I closed two more recently. The intake for the galley sink. I am running it from one of the freshwater tanks. The sink drain will feed to the gray water tank off of the head. Two holes eliminated with these changes.
@@Even_Keeled You're doing a gray water tank in a boat that size? I'm surprised you have room. Or do you mean the black tank? My boat has even more ridiculous thru hulls, like the macerator discharge for the black tank, which is below the waterline. It's so hard to tell when it's done pumping, and is just an unnecessary leak risk in my opinion
Do you have any concerns about using aluminum for your mounting plates? Although heavier and more expensive, wouldn't SS be a better choice?
Great question. I spoke with Beta Marine techs at the Annapolis Boat Show about my engine install and they had no issue with the aluminum plates. They are 3” X 28” aluminum long plates.
Thanks@@Even_Keeled I appreciate the reply and the dimensions. I'm starting the restoration of a 1976 Frances 26 and plan on putting in a Beta 14 or 16 (TBD). Just came across your videos and already can see how they are going to be helpful (definately appreciate that you are doing them). Thank you. One other questionk for now, are the plates 1/2 inch or something different?
@@tomlix Yes, ½” . With a 45 bevel to fit the Westsail's engine pan, but it could be completely different for the Frances. Plus, some notch the aft, inner corners of the plates to allow the engine and accompanying cables, hoses, etc. to fit easier. That all sounds like an exciting restoration. The best of luck!
Keep up the good work. Too bad good work is always hard work. 😉
The truth. Still a good journey. Often nice to get lost in boat work after being focused in other areas, like the farm.
Good to see paint on her after so much hard work restoring the hull surface. Loved the Japan interlude; looks as if you did too. Hope the winter treats the farm well!
You and me both! As it gets cold, it’ll be nice to redirect efforts to the engine room and getting the Beta 38 fully installed.
I am surprised I don’t know you Great find Good professional work Where is the boat now?
Thanks. Boat is on a farm off the coast. Once the refit is done, then it’ll be a whole search for where to dock it.
Looking great!!
How many gals of bottom paint?
Three gallons of primer and three gallons of antifoul. Six total; a gallon a coat for this 32'. Most use the formula of calculating the approximate surface area of the hull below the waterline, in square feet: multiply boat length X beam X 0.85. Typically, 500 sq. ft. per gallon. I plan to use an outdrive antifouling paint for any underwater metals.
@@Even_Keeled great i have two gals of same bottom paint for my WS32 on the Hudson River
@@captaindrew3061 After each coat, there was just enough left in the bucket to go around with a brush for hard-to-reach spots. Used TotalBoat Spartan (blue, then black) for antifoul.

@@JamesJohnston-bh2de I will keep this in mind. Thank you!
Fantastic 👍👍 keep em coming

My hull looked similar I bought a gelplaner and got rid of the lot, I was going to resheath below the waterine but she is a thick and solid 60's vinylester layup so don't think I am going to worry about it, great project mate!
That was an option, but sodablasting was a recommendation from one of the original managers of the Westsail yard since it is such a thick hull and any damage is close to the surface. But a gelplaner has worked well on other boats and you're right, these older boats are layed up thickly and priming and painting seal them up correctly.
I have just discovered your beautiful channel and projec. It is amazing!!! thanks for sharing it! greetings from Spain!

If only this boat was on my farm! Good work!
Nice Kubota! The Beta I am repowering this boat with is just a marinized Kubota.
@@Even_Keeled should be a great engine!
You should seriously consider stripping the bottom and fair it better. Westsails are slow enough as it is, and that bottom is nowhere near smooth enough, even for cruising.
I paused between these coats and the next to do a lot of what you mentioned. The hull wasn't smooth enough; more sanding and fairing; I needed to take out another thru-hull and repair it, and more. The videos will catch up to the projects. Thanks for the suggestion.
Thanks
Thanks for watching.
Thank you for sharing. This will be my project next spring so I be using your video as to how to make it happen 👍👍👍
Awesome! The next three layers I’ll have help to make sure the antifoul and barrier coat adhere correctly. Soon, I’ll share the painting of the topside, boot stripe, and gunwale.
@@Even_Keeled always looking forward to seeing your progress and I’m try to figure how many thru hulls I can fill lol.
@@Westsail A popular change is removing the thru-hulls for the scupper drains. That gets rid of the largest two holes in the boat. While I have my video for that, I can email the pictures and directions from another Westsail owner. The other change is doing away with the intake and output for the head. I’m keeping with the traditional Jabsco, but composting is an option. Finally, a lot of new yachts are running the sink from the fresh water tank. That could eliminate the salt water intake for that. This, I might actually do. One less hole in the boat.
Looking good! I've been thinking about soda blasting my W32. And I have some thru-hulls that need removed. You really got me thinking about getting the stands and just bringing this out to the homestead and working on it here.
I wanted everything brand new on the bottom. The soda blasting was worth every penny to get a decade + of ablative paint off. The red you see in older videos after I sodablasted, is the red gelcoat that was applied to the mold after the white finish gelcoat was applied to the mold. This dark color was applied so any air entrapped in the fabric and resin layers could be seen and squeegeed out. New thru-hulls were a must for me too. All manageable projects. Stands are pricey. 7 Brownell boat stands, 3 chains, and 6 keel blocks totaled $1994.80. You can find them used. I’ll sale mine once I’m done.
Couple of handsome animals in opening shot! Great to see the barrier coat going on; it's like 'dressing' the boat for the sea at last! Green boot stripe.
Yes, at last! Videos lag the progress. I’m excited to move below deck to start on the interior projects. Just a few, but time consuming. Plan is to then finish with the work topside and then she’ll be ready - or close to ready. There will always be something to do.
Very informative video! The boat is looking great!
Thanks! I enjoyed the paint’s long working time despite it being a very hot day.
It's good to see you back at it. I have been working on my Westsail 32 Hull 099 (Quintessa) as often as I can get down there. It's hard to prioritize the life you live for the life you want to live. If you ever want to bounce any ideas off me, or are ok with me bouncing ideas off you, that would be great? I just finished installing the Beta 38, a new shaft and shaft log. It was an adventure. :)
That’s great! I will send an email. I’m curious how you have your engine room setup. I’ve looked at a lot of engine bays and even saw @Westsail28 video recently. ruclips.net/video/jXs-4QdTcWQ/видео.html&feature=sharea
@@Even_Keeled Sure thing. I have some video of the install. I'm still working on the fuel tanks and need to order some stuff. I will be working on the Hull this weekend and cleaning up some of the deck, weather allowing.
What type of farm do you run?
Multiuse. Diversified: animals, hay, and option to timber.
@@Even_Keeled That’s great, I’m a Soil Scientist with the USDA, and work with farmers! Take care of the soil and it will take care of you! You had a clip of the sheep so I was just being nosey!
Natures schedule is not ours to decide. I live in a rural area like you, although a lot poorer land so I recognise the priorities. It's not going to stop me following! Maybe a few farm videos thrown in when time permits mightn't be unpopular. But it's busy season now, so maybe not such a good idea. Take care, and come back to us when you can.
Farm work is done. Back aboard the Westsail. Thanks for continuing to follow along.
You main job in life comes first your boat is like your hobby although it is work it is a form of relaxation from the normal life style of the farm 😊😊

Was there shower facility. Like pull out shower head. Just can't get any response on this even westsail owners association. I guess no water heater or water pump for pressure.
Routed in the engine bay on my Westsail was a pump for a cockpit shower. I have also seen a setup with a shower grate in between the saloon and v-berth, with cabin doors closed, which drains to bilge. Nothing else is mentioned about showers aboard per westsail.com/servman2.htm
Here is an image of the shower grate on a Westsail. www.cruisersforum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=37789&stc=1&thumb=1&d=1329952323
? ... you owned this boat 'before the hurricane' ? .. (reading your vid description above,,?)
I was regular crew before Hurricane Isaias in 2020. The boat looked good despite the marina taking a direct hit. Now I own it and will complete a full refit.
Too slow, too repetitive. We don't need to see every hose disconnected and every bucket of bilge water hoisted. Also one and a half minutes of intro video is a waste of time.
Intro is only :27. It's typical. Yeah, I cut out a lot of those farm shots in future videos. Everyone gets it. Countryside. But, this video was to have more of a visual record of all of the hoses for labeling, so I spliced it in. And the clips of buckets of oil/diesel/water were a mere 30 seconds. These videos serve as snapshots of the entire process as I appreciate each stage of it all. Currently, both bilge and engine room are spotless and repainted. All looks great. But you probably won't make it that far in the videos. Or, skip ahead.
Nice shot with the bin lid.
I'm ready for the ring toss at the county fair.
