I love the British canal system, its history, heritage, the natural world around it, walking its length and breadth, and sharing it with you all.

Regents Canal Walk London (with warthogs and wild dogs)
Great to see you covered the Derby canal, Ive got a dedicated playlist no my RUclips channel. Ive flown most of the route with my drone and also mapped it out for Google Streetview and also done lots of then and now videos of the former canal do have a look.
Thanks I've subscribed to your channel. I caught a couple of your drone flights, great to see the canal landscape from above.
@@eclectictraveller Thanks, yes I find seeing it all from above really helps you see the route. Hope you enjoy my then and now Derby canal videos they bring it to life.
Thank you for the latest video, I wonder why they restored that lock you said 26 years ago but then just left nature to continue to do its thing. I wonder why they didn’t concentrate on the surrounding area of the lock over the following years. What is your opinion 20/30 years at this rate? I think you and I will be long gone by the time this one is finished LOL 😋
I think the Canal Trust is focusing its efforts in the Draycott area close to the cafe. The lock and bridge at Borrowash would have made an excellent starting point too. Yes I think this restoration will take several years, Grantham and Chesterfield canal restorations are further forward than Derby currently.
Sitting here in Australia I would love the occasional pan to a Google map.
That's a good idea thanks for suggesting it. I'll try and include maps in a video soon.
THIS IS A EXAMPLE OF LABOUR RUN BARNSLEY COUNCLE STICK HEAD IN SAND AND DONT GIVE A FU//K ,,, JUST SPEND MONEY ON DISTROY MARKET BUILD NEW KNOCK IT DOWN BUILD A NEW MARCKET 60 % OF SHOP SHUT DOWN,, HOME TO TO DRUGES BOOZ AND GRUGES,, YOU CAN TELL ITS LABOUR ROAD;S MADE UP OF WITH PONDS WITH A LITTLE TARMACK,,, CAN KEEP GOING FOR EVER ABOUT THIS MOB.
I think think some work is ongoing at Langley Mill re routing a section under the A610 on towards Aldecar Flash.Enjoyable vlog as always.
Thanks hope you are well. I'll try to catch up on the progress at Langley Mill in future.
Thank you So much for your latest walk, was it Yesterday as it’s been so hot here. Your Abandoned Canal walks just leave me feeling So Sad at what has been lost for us, it’s not really progress in my eyes Tell me do you have a switch on what you have your video camera or phone on the turn from the view point to yourself when you are talking to the camera?
Thank you. Yes I walked on Friday, too much heat and not enough hydration, my mistake. I use a DJI Osmo pocket camera mounted on an extension rod. There is a switch on the extension rod that allows me to rotate the camera through 180 degrees. I find it fairly easy to use and edit from.
It's not a Kora, it's a Kamele N'Goni. You can hear him say it at the start. It comes from the six string Donso N'Goni. It's similar to the Kora but has a different tuning( Pentatonic), construction and history
Thanks very much for spotting that. I've updated the title with the correct instrument name.
Another Brilliant video it really is a delight discovering your videos 😊 Can I ask how many have you filmed and uploaded to RUclips so I can watch them all. You must do a lot of research into the abandoned canals and those that are being hopefully restored in your local areas Are you in touch with the various Societies? Even though I am retired I am subscribed with yearly fees to 3 Societies right now as I feel it right to help the brilliant people doing this important work to preserve our past Give up the good work 😊
I have about 50 videos so far but not all of them relate to canals. The quality of my early ones aren't as high as my more recent, my narration is more relaxed than it used to be. I do research them, I like to understand the history and share it.
I am So glad RUclips gave me recommendations for your videos a little time ago and I love your walks They really make me feel Sad seeing Our Wonderful English Canals that was just abandoned and left to fall into ruin and some actually filled in, built on etc 😢 Thank you for covering these important part our culture and heritage I feel it’s important Will you walk the Dearn and Dove Canal at sometime? BTW where are you from are you from the area? Keep up the Great work 😋
Thanks very much. I'm hoping to visit the Dearne and Dove at some point. I've been looking into that one, another sad loss. Yes Derbyshire and Yorkshire is my stamping ground, but I'm hoping to visit some canals further afield in the near future.
I believe the Barnsley CRG folded a few years ago, they'd had no new members for years, they passed their unused funds onto another canal group.
Thanks for the update. I've had a search online, it looks like the funds went to the Chesterfield Canal restoration.
Are you allowed to fish there? Great video btw nice seeing that part of the world.
Thank you. I saw a lot of people fishing at Codnor Park Reservoir, no one on the canal itself though.
I’ve traveled from Worksop to West Stockwith on a boat then stockwith to the limit of navigation.
It's a lovely stretch of canal around Worksop and Retford.
This video is my first recorded at 1080 high definition resolution which will hopefully improve the picture quality. Please watch this and my future videos back at 1080HD. Thanks for watching and your support.
That old "iron work" on the canal was a fascinating find.Amazing how it's still there after so many years. A lot of interesting stuff to see (good and bad) in a small area. Thank for an informative vlog on the Nutbrook. All these canal walks must be honing your fitness too! Regards Heyden.
Thank you, that was a highlight of the walk. The walking does help with the fitness, you're right. I hope you are well.
I was certain you had changed the name of your channel… I really like these videos … I do walks after a night shift and I believe I capture the canals at their best, particularly in summer, when it starts getting light at 03:30am. It’s magical.
Early mornings are definitely the best time. There's more bird activity too which I enjoy. I hope the restoration at Grantham and Chesterfield goes smoothly. I would like to attend the grand re-openings of both canals.
My husband and I really love your vlogs. You show us parts of the countryside that no-one else does, and point out things and are knowledgeable about things, so your vlogs are really interesting. I can't understand how few subscribers you have, and also how few viewings you get. Thank you so much for doing these walks that we can n longer do. ❤
Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoy them, I really enjoy the walks and sharing them. Hopefully the subscribers will come in time.
Incredible Peak District. Another charming edition, nice underfoot conditions, fortunately. Particularly with all the rain we’re having!
Thank you. I've just enjoyed your wellbeing walk too.
Love the thumbnail … good video … my wife and I just rescued a blue tit that we found apparently traumatised… after a few hours though, after capturing it without any effort, we took it back to our boat, nursed it and after several hours we released it back into the wild … 🎉
I had a similar thing in my garden last year. Hope the chicks make it to adulthood.
@@eclectictraveller did you change your channel… I must admit was a little confused…
@@thoughtsonnarrowboatingwit3882 Yes but I've gone back to my original channel again, think that was a mistake.
Thanks for the video. I’m planning a bike ride from Nottingham to Grantham along the canal and the information in your film will add extra value to my trip.
Thank you. There are well surfaced towpaths on some sections. Take care at the main roads.
Interesting information.Very good to see the improvements and on going work by the canal society.Quite a change from the usual doom and gloom.Loved the bench with the map engraved on it.Great idea. Thanks for a fascinating video.
Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it. The bench was my highlight too.
A lot of rubbish things went on in the 1960's.I remember the Ernest Marples situation regarding motorways. On the Cromford Canal on which you did a video they chopped the canal at Sawmills where the canal went over the road and removed a set of traffic lights to speed up the traffic.Fifty years later guess what? A new set of traffic lights 100 yards from the original! I have a photo of canal, road, river and railway snuggling up to each other at that location. We played there as kids.An iconic image. Enjoyed your coverage.Thank you for highlighting the issues on the Grantham canal.
Thank you, I think we hold our canals in more affection today than we did back then. They are wonderful corridors for nature.
Thank you for the video, Great to see the revitalization of a historic water-way. Best regards from Chicago, usa.
Thank you. It will be very good news when this is navigable again.
The Grantham canal is to be rerouted from Holme Pierrpont across the fields through to Cotgrave to avoid the problems and expense of restoring the existing route.
That's very interesting thank you. I wasn't aware of that.
Excellent video Mike. Great to see your channel doing so well.
Looks good, particularly from the top lock, the locks look very well maintained don’t they. I’m moored at Barton Turn, with Notts only a days navigation away… would love to go through there one day maybe…nice follow up to your last one. All that temporary works around lock 13 looks promising. I’ve worked on the rail at Bottesford and Grantham…
Thank you. They are making very good progress with the restoration. The big challenge will be reconnecting with the river Trent and the centre of Grantham as that will mean crossing the A52 and the A1.
Imagine how many navvies it must have taken to dig that out in 4 years
It must have been a huge number - 33 miles in 4 years using 1790s technology.
The 1960s were also the time of Beeching and the dramatic cutbacks to the railways. The Minister for Transport, Mr Ernest Marples, was also the owner of a road building company. Putting it as politely as I can it is a case of 'enlightened self-interest'.
Thank you. The loss of the Grantham Canal looks unnecessary to me. By all accounts it was in good condition when it closed in the 1930s and all the damage was inflicted later.
I was down Notts on a night shift … nipped down to castle lock and wharf for a muse …. then this popped up … if they had any sense, they would get this up and running, if nothing else for water management alone. Great video, keep ‘em coming.
Thank you. I think the Grantham Canal Society is making good progress getting this one back to being navigable.
Please subscribe if you have enjoyed this video. It takes me a day to walk, film and edit, but only a second to click the subscribe button. Thank you for watching.
In my childhood many canals were like this. Quiet walks, teeming with fish, birds, plants, insects and wildlife. Now they are effectively brown motorways for boats. Gridlocked at every lock. Perhaps that's where the term came from? 😉
Very good point. With hindsight I can see the virtue of leaving the southern section of the canal nature friendly, and only running the one pleasure boat on the northern section.
There is a wikipedia page on the Nutbrook canal at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutbrook_Canal
Enjoyed that, very informative and great footage 😊
Thank you. It's a beautiful stretch of canal and I really enjoyed walking it.
Liked the pulley wheel on the stone block, gems of from a more challenging time… Subscribed … Thank you!
Thank you. I suspect that pulley might have been more trouble than it was worth.
Subscribed …
Thank you very much.
500 views with my click, well done, nice to see your channel gaining traction, very nice.
Thank you. I'm trying to devote more time to it as Spring is a great walking season.
Looks amazing there and as you elude too, ripe for restoration. The therapeutic element of walking along a canal corridor is arresting and calming and offers incredible health benefits, an opportunity to shake off the pressures of busy pavements and roads in cities and towns. Very informative as usual. Thank you.
You're right, walking along water courses always lifts my spirits. Interestingly I noticed the difference in air quality the moment I left the canal and headed for Wakefield train station.
A nice video with some interesting information. I have pictures of the Nutbrook (2016) making brief appearances between the Erewash and 'Hotwater' at 4:30 before the current industrial re-development prevented access.
That's interesting thank you. I hoped to locate the canal remnants on the ironworks site but with fences, warning signs and heavy duty equipment on site it wasn't possible.
Relaxing video😊
Thank you, I really enjoyed the walk. I hope to walk the other half of the Peak Forest Canal soon and record it on RUclips.
Love the Kora! Originated in Mali. Tradition of playing was always handed down from Griot father to son. ~Until Sona Jobarteh’s father handed down the tradition to her as First Female Virtuoso Kora player.
Thanks very much for the information, it's not an instrument I'm familiar with.
@@eclectictraveller It’s beautiful😊
I worked here in the 80s restoring the canal
I imagine that must have been a pretty tough job after so many years of neglect.
@@eclectictraveller Hard work but the best job I ever had ,we even had a book written about the work we did
Charles I V. was King of Bohemia and Holy Roman emperor in 14 century.Austro -Hungarian empire started 1866 after Austrian Empire was divided in two parts.Holy Roman Empire was abolished in 1806.
Thanks very much, I appreciate it.
I've been in the tower and seen the old bells about 15 or 20 years ago with my dad and the vicar we lived in lowfield house wich is basically opsite the churche next to the council officers. Great video gone memories 👍
Thank you. It is a lovely church, plenty of age and character. I enjoyed my visit and the vicar was very welcoming.
the locks could be sandbagged closed.
I downloaded an app for my phone which gets live river levels for the whole of Europe's rivers. Surely a level indicator on each section between locks would raise the alarm for authorities, of criminal activities on the canal, so saving thousands of fish and inconvenience to canal users. Even cctv could be used to catch the culprits. Really enjoyable video thanks for uploading.
Thanks very much. Love the comment about autumn arriving with the St Ledger horse race, I never heard that before.
"Autumn comes in on t' tail of the last horse home in t' St. Ledger" an old farmer I used to know always to say. The Danger signs were probably related to the electricity cables that crossed the waterway at that point. Nice film, I've been planning a walk there myself.
Nice beat
Just catching up with your vlogs. This was really fascinating, full of the real history of the area.Your conversation with the local chap was riveting - living history. The monument to the lost fishermen was moving to say the least.I felt that I was looking at real people.Being of a certain age I remember the Cod Wars very well. So much packed into one vlog! Thank You.
Thank you very much. It was a really interesting conversation I had with the local, he was full of interesting stories. I've had a few back problems recently which has delayed the vlogs but hope to restart soon. Hope you're both well.
Wow, can’t believe this! So sad to see. After spending a full winter on the Erewash canal on our Narrowboat, it’s scary to see the boats in that position too.
I'm not shocked. The West has its Sad Crazies...
