    Make sure you remind your viewers of RUclips shenanigans… I didn’t get a notification of your vlog… I watched Court Above The Cut on the Chesterfield Canal… equally, I didn’t get a notification for that… birds are going nuts on the T & M right now… great video … I love days like these! Loved those boats… you had boats in the video … keep up the great work.

      Thanks very much. I'll send a message out to subscribers about the notification issue. I'm going to look out for narrow boat painting from now on, and include more in future vlogs. Some of it is excellent quality. Are you safely moved into a marina now or still out and about?

      @ the most beautiful marina on the T&M … Barton Marina - we have a cinema / restaurant just 150 metres from where we’re moored … and the waterfront banquet suite and public house, a Thai restaurant, farm shop and cafeteria, all set to ambiance lighting that even on the greyest of days it looks like the Spanish riviera…. So Christmassy right now…

    Another great vlog of my local area. As you set off from the Boat Inn bridge the winding hole on your right is not an original feature of the canal, that was put in place in I think the 1980's. The fields on your left between Hayton and Clayworth were known locally as Celery Fields that was market gardened by Barlow Brothers. The celery grown was called Clayworth Pink due to the nature of the soil it was grown in which is a reddish clay and gave it a pinkish colour. The produce used to be taken by horse and cart to a sidings and platform at Welham where is was transported by train to Sheffield for sale in the wholesale markets there.

    Of course, successive governments will be lobbied to increase funding, but to my mind there is massive scope to increase tourism. You only have to read the comments on narrowboat channels from overseas viewers who have no idea so many of our historic inland waterways are still navigable, that they're mainly used for leisure, that anyone from anywhere can hire a boat and that no training or qualification is required. What other country has this? Why aren't we publicising it more? As a boat owner myself, I'd be quite happy for there to be more congestion if it meant increased revenue/funding.

    • @eclectictraveller
      @eclectictraveller 7 дней назад

      That is an excellent point about the potential of tourism. I think our canal network is an excellent selling point too. I would love to switch from gongoozling to boating, will look into it.

    Just watched your video, and I'm impressed with your research. I was interested to see the end-point of your walk - the viewing platform on 'The Mound' - part of the former Shipley estate now owned and managed by the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. This however, was not the 'terminus' as you called it, of the Nutbrook Canal... The canal actually began about 500 yards further on along the Nutbrook Trail cycle path (past the Nutbrook Cafe), where a pond beside the trail is filled by the outflow from Shipley Lake, which was created, following opencast operations, in the early 1970s. Before the opencasting, the valley was the site of the former Shipley Reservoir, which provided the water for the canal - this flowed under the existing stone bridge into Paul's Arm, which was the site of a wharf, where canal boats would be loaded with coal from the adjacent Woodside Colliery, before being shipped along the Nutbrook Canal down to the Erewash Canal at Stanton Lock. The constant operation of the 13 locks you mentioned (together with the mining-related subsidence) led to such a demand for water that the nearby Mapperley Reservoir had to be constructed (I believe around 1840) as supplementary supply. The still-existing watercourse downstream now flows into Manners Floods (INCORRECTLY labelled 'Manor' Floods by Erewash Borough Council on their signage!) and rejoins the route of the old Nutbrook Canal! I cut my teeth as a young County Council Countryside Ranger at Shipley Country Park (we also had responsibility for managing the Nutbrook Valley - including Manners Floods - named after Manners Colliery) under Head Ranger Frank Bacon - an absolute fount of local history knowledge - a little bit of which rubbed off on me! Thanks again for your video!

    Perhaps if canals were modelled, as part of resilience planning for flood management etc dare to suggest may well become apparent they would be a key element, though will require some very different lateral thinking plus no longer appropriate to be managed or delivered by a Charitable Body. Canals, understand are within a 5 mile range of 50% of the country's Housing and have a central position with regard to many urban industrial & commercial settings, with capacity to hold & manage significant volumes of water, that can be slowly released/dispersed; surely vital/key in sustaining both the past & future, from many aspects, a crucial accommodation be achieved for all urgently?

I hope it doesn't take some kind of crisis to open politician's eyes to how essential they are Thanks very much for your comment.

      @ not at the moment, we’re helping a veteran friend of ours purchase a new boat, we had it craned in on Tuesday at Barton Marina (Nr. Lock 10 ) on the T & M. I was at Atherstone flight earlier and saw that the Rothen Group were busy tidying up, dredging etc. all of last year, there was dredging works going on, all up and down the T&M, brand new lock gates and ironmongery at Stenson Lock No.6 and this year, more dredging than I can remember in years. Trust me, if the going gets tough, boaters will get going.

    Rothan Group are the contractors working on that lock for CRT… a tidy little outfit based at Mancetter on the Coventry Canal. After work I always do a canal walk wherever I can, usually after a nightly night shift… with respect to being prepared for winter…. I have a marine engineer, my son and an Elon ready for the first canal to be built on Mars…😉 seriously though, you’re bang on about winter preparation, I bang on about it all the time. The best places to head for, particularly if one is a constant cruiser, is to stay on the mainlines and near a facilities point or marina. I personally recommend folk, stay at a marina between October and March, to avoid any winter closure.

    • @eclectictraveller
      @eclectictraveller 22 дня назад

      Thanks very much. Staying on the main lines sounds like excellent advice for any boater who keeps cruising in winter. So easy to get trapped on a section of canal located between CRT repair jobs. I love the idea of a vacuum cleaner for condensation, must be so satisfying to use.

    It isn’t just a worrying time for the canals, it’s a worrying time for our whole world. The whole western world is in the grip of complete and total incompetence. Has a boater of almost 10 years, I will do my bit to keep an eye on the particular places I tend to frequent, helping out wherever I can. Our heritage, our birthright, must be protected. When you work on heritage and learn about the blood sweat and tears that went into it, in often appalling conditions, one will understand. Another informative video, shame that we didn’t see any moored or moving boats, interestingly, the lock gear hydraulics are the same standard as the first 6 locks on from the Derwent mouth to Stenson Bubble on the Trent and Mersey. It’s interesting because to the best of my knowledge there isn’t a manufacturer or location name on any of them … can anyone find out, because they’re the easiest to use and very robust. Usually here as ‘thoughtsonnarrowboating’ btw!

    Nice video. The "old lock" at 18:00 is actually the footings of a railway bridge. The whole area was riddled with railways at one time. Sadly the Cuckoo Way was overgrown because the volunteer who used to mow the path regularly had his mower stolen, but now has a new one. The 2027 deadline was indeed an aspiration, but Covid and HS2 really put an end to meeting that timescale. The threat of HS2 meant that nobody was prepared to invest anything in the canal, in case HS2 came along with their bulldozers and flattened it again.

      Thanks very much for the update. There has been fantastic progress with the restoration of this one and I'm confident that it will be restored in time. I met the Chesterfield Canal Trust Publicity Officer on a recent walk and I can see how dedicated and enthusiastic he is about the project.

    Thank you Sir for another Quality video, it’s really pleasing that we have people like your Good Self to keep a light shining on neglected and forgotten Remained Canals. The Maps are really Fascinating I think 😋 Do you boat on any of the Canals you film and narrate about?

      I love the maps too. There are seven on the Canal Trust website so worth a look at. I'm not a boater but hoping to arrange a trip out on one in future and to video my experience. Hope you are well.

    Hi there. Just watching this clip and you mentioned not knowing if Staveley Town Lock was ever used. As a volunteer on the narrow boat Madeline, based at Hollingwood Hub, I can confirm that it's used on a regular basis. We take passengers down the lock, turn round and then back up again. Then return to Hollingwood. Enjoy your clips. Keep it up. 👍😊

      Thanks very much, I'm glad it's in use. I saw padlocks on the lock mechanism which made me wonder.

    • @MickSpavold
      @MickSpavold 2 месяца назад

      @eclectictraveller we have padlocks on all our lock paddle handles, and the volunteers all have keys. This is due to pranksters opening the paddles and draining the locks, and possibly the canal. (Which has happened in the past). You'd think they'd have something better to do. Keep up the good work. 👍😊

      Yes I can see some canals like the Chesterfield and the Grantham getting restored. The Derby I have doubts about as things stand.

    Just a quick word about the crucible furnace men statue. Don't forget what was there before Meadowhall, steel works. Perhaps more should be made of this at the site of the statue.

      Yes I agree. There is a small plaque but it could be more informative. I think the statue used to be inside Meadowhall where more people could see it too.

    Thanks for another lovely informative video, it looked so nice on your walk but Not one Narrow Boat is it not very popular or not easy for boats to get to do you think?

    • @eclectictraveller
      @eclectictraveller 2 месяца назад

      It's not the easiest of canals to reach. Boats have to come a long way down the river Don navigation to reach the Sheffield and Tinsley canal. The only way out is to go back down the Don, no other routes are available out of Sheffield. Currently boaters have to book passage through the Tinsley locks in advance with the Canal and River Trust which probably adds to the effort required to make the journey. Personally I think it's a route that is well worth making and I would recommend boaters to go for it, I hope this artwork is an incentive.

      Has a boater of ten years, you’re on the right track, this is an issue elsewhere on the system. Has interesting has it may seems, It’s a big commitment making that kind of journey.

      @@thoughtsonnarrowboatingwit3882Yes I think it's one of the less visited parts of the canal network. A real shame as there is so much industrial heritage in Sheffield notably at Kelham Island.
