The Office: The RIDE
WHY does one of the most popular shows ever (still incredibly popular 15 years later!) still not have its own theme park attraction? If it's due to a shortage of ideas, I'm throwing this out there!
I'd LOVE to hear your edits & additions to this story, or your own concept! Can't go wrong with The Office!

    What a wonderful video!! I would also add that my favorite J Paul Getty quote comes to mind… “Rise early, work hard and strike oil!” It helps to be VERY lucky. For starters I would add to be the very best at one thing they happen to need at the time and also have a good working knowledge of every other field that comes in contact with your job discipline. I have been working with WDI and Disney Creative Entertainment for the last 30 years or so. It was definitely my dream and getting to work with such amazingly talented teams has been the highlight of my life. We did everything in house for so many years but since they scaled back, Garner Holt and other production companies have hired a lot of former imagineers and are contracting a lot of outside work for Disney. After wanting to be an Imagineer for so many years, I kept having to remind myself that WDI isn’t where you start out but where you end up when you rise high enough in your field. Keep working on your art or craft!!!

    When I was a kid I loved the Disney parks and I would bring a small tape recorder to Disneyland to record the rides. I did the same thing at Walt Disney World. I would listen to the tapes and practice all the different voices from all the rides. I became a voice actor in the 80s and in 1993 I was hired by Walt Disney Imagineering to narrate a brand new attraction coming to Walt Disney World called The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. I preform the voice of the great Rod Serling. It has been a dream come true to be the voice of a classic Disney ride.

      Sure. I went in after I had been a working professional as a set designer, prop maker, cosmetic and mechanical animation repair man etc. I had a goal of being a show producer (which was the title of creative director back then). But my experience clearly didn't matter to them. They saw I had a masters of fine arts degree in theatrical set design so I was plunked down and handcuffed to a drafting table for three years. I then said to myself that enough was enough and I resigned and worked for a creative company in Hollywood as a art and design manager for three more years. After that I was hired by MCA (Universal back then) to design and "creatively direct" the Jurassic Park Ride for Universal Studios in Hollywood. When that was done I thought now was a good time to return to Disney because they could see I was a creative director and hire me as such. WRONG. This time they slammed a hard hat on me and had me supervise the field install of other people's designs. I did this for twelve years. I gave up my dreams and moved to Atlanta to study health care work so I could get out of this pigeon holed industry for good. Remember, you ARE whatever they have a hire requisition open for and if you do your job to the best of your ability that's where you'll be forever.@@AJ-gc5dg

    I’m going into community college right now and for a long time I’ve been debating about what to do. I’ve mainly been deciding between pursuing a business major or a mechanical engineering major, but ultimately either way I strongly feel that I need to end up with a job that lets me be creative. The thing is, my interests are all over the place. I also love movies and fashion, but specifically, I always felt that a future I would really really love has to do with marvel studios/disney. It would just be so amazing if I could provide people with the same pure magical joy I’ve gotten myself from their projects over the years. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to make it there to Disney solely through the film industry though and I’ve been looking for ways to combine all of my interests as well. From this thinking I discovered imagineering as it deals with so many of the things I am passionate about. I’m still struggling with finding my path but this video helped a lot to understand more about imagineering, thank you!!

      Hey!! Have you decided on a major at all, and if so, what did you end up choosing? I’m on a really similar path and it would be nice to hear from another CC student.

    • @quill404
      @quill404 Год назад

      @@durpyrainbowp8405 Hi! Yes I did decide on a major, I am doing engineering. Some lines of thinking that led me to this decision is that you can be an engineer and go into business, but you can’t really be a businessperson and go into engineering. Also I kind of enjoy mathematics and I already have some business knowledge. I think business is something that does not necessarily have to be learned in a university as well. Another thing is that I have for sure decided that I want to eventually work on theme parks. The industry as a whole is called “themed entertainment” and I am now doing everything I can to align myself with that. I don’t know anybody who is in the industry themselves and it is a pretty hard thing to discover and learn about (especially at cc) so if you are also interested in theme parks/other immersive experiences (like museums) I can tell you more. Mainly I found that I am most passionate about this path but I thought about all outcomes. So I also choose this major because if I am unable to break into the industry, I will still have a degree in engineering which is good for many other things. I really hope to do themed entertainment engineering though because to me it is the exact crossroad I was looking for with combining creativity/design, business, and of course engineering.

I would offer that the sooner you start working in your dream field, the sooner you'll either enjoy it or learn it was actually a nightmare - which gives you time to react and pivot, with less fear of sunk cost. Also, add "freelance" or "hobby" to whatever you look up about your intended career, and you may find a way to get involved and start building experience before landing a job. Good luck, all!

    Great video! Do you think an education in film technology could jump over to being a theme park creative?

    • @brittmarkart
      @brittmarkart 3 года назад

      Absolutely! Theme park attractions are becoming exponentially reliant on video to add levels of immersion to the experience, and the quality standard is raising ALL the time, so innovation of that tech is extremely important! There are a few routes to take depending on where your interest lies (ie if you prefer the tech of the displays or if you are more interested in the creation of the media that is being displayed). Keep your eyes open to companies who specialize in this field, and remember that even major theme parks like Disney will often utilize those companies (rather than do all the work in-house) because the specialized companies often produce the best work since they make sure to stay on top of the latest innovations!

I have always been saying I just wanted to become a mechanical engineer, but am horrible with math and as a junior I’m struggling to figure out what to do and where to start? Any advice

    • @brittmarkart
      @brittmarkart 3 года назад

      When I first started learning about Imagineering, I assumed everyone was a mechanical engineer, but it's NOT TRUE haha. Definitely figure out what degree sounds FUN and then see if it will get you to where you want to be after school. If you hate your major, you're probably gonna hate your job, no matter what company you work for. If you love writing, definitely go that route! If you're in college, talk to people in the English and Theater departments to find out what specific major sounds up your alley - quite a few different programs will be applicable (the job applications for writers in the industry typically say they require "English, Script-writing, Creative Writing, or RELATED degree"). But they will also require a portfolio, so start writing now! The more you write right now, the far better off you'll be when it's time to select your best pieces for a job application. And write whatever you want - short stories, novels, plays, theme park ride narratives, children's books, etc. And here's a hint: if you start writing a bunch and realize you really really don't like writing -- you probably won't like doing it 40 hours a week. So try to find the thing that you love doing and pursue that. You will thank yourself.

I just finished my first year of architecture at LSU. I would binge watch the Imagineering Story docuseries while grinding out late night projects to keep me motivated. I leave for a trip to Disney world in 2 weeks, and I will found out if I made the cut in order to continue with my education in architecture while at the location of my future dream job.
